actually i am pretty sure the sponges are for grip. there is a similar product that i have seen on tv and with a better grip you get more power. more of a mental thing for you to be able to maximize muscle output so your mind won't limit muscle power for safety.

@1JanDeMan1 Holding the bar under the chest crease isolates the chest taking the shoulders out of the lift(somewhat).
Keeping your elbows tucked takes the triceps out of it making the weight more on the chest and activating less of the tri's. Hope this helps.
