This was not racist. Betty Boop is touting those kids as stars for the future of TV and Film. She is saying these black babies have the talent to be big. Also the black audience members were not in the colored only section but sat amongst the white patrons. The stereotypes played on here with the watermelon and singing are stereotypes black comedians like Dave Chapelle still use to this day. As for the animation it is simply the view of the time but the subtext for those black kids remains good
Nigger is a discriminative term used towards people of african american descent, thank you. :) Happy to help you with your grammar test. Now run along, child.
@time4pwnagenow hahahaha. you're fucking funny. like i love ignorant bigots like you. you're so fun to make fun of and you get mad sooooo easily. you're like a little kid. it's funny. so please, keep being dumb, every town needs it's village idiot. :)
@DC93boy I'm not mad at all. You started this conversation anyway by calling me "dumb". If I'm a "bigot" to you, cool. You're a fucking nigger to me. And I hate niggers. So piss off.
@time4pwnagenow i'm non-tolerant? that's the pot calling the kettle black. or in your case, nigger. please learn what words mean before you use them....
It's called "Old School Racism" 1935? This was before "Civil Rights" but at the same time slavery has been abolished for quite some time. They make the appearance with literaly black skin, animal noses, big buldging lips, typical "Pikaninni" hair style, and the only thing that made those "childen" shut up was some watermelon. Any black kids see this now a days they would be like "What the fuck is this suppose to mean?" back then, they were like "Assholes!"
XD this is kind of racist...but only if u think of it as so. However, the way the black babies look is a bit monkeyish 0_o. I def didn't look like that when I was a baby. XD
For 1935 it was actually quite progressive. One would not see a mixed-race show, and especially not see even one black person in a white audience in the south of the 1930s--maybe in the north. The vaudeville characterization of black people was terrible, then; but so were characterizations of other minoriies.
there is a commonly held stereotype that black people love watermelon. it is based on the idea that all blacks are poor and can only afford food that can be grown very quickly, easily, and cheaply (watermelon).
the watermelon was purposefully put there twice, too (when's the last time you saw someone at a play pull watermelon out of purse)
having an entire room full of white people with one black woman and a baby isnt exactly racially palatable either
it doesnt always have to be an argument. first - i have a grip. up till now all my posts were completely free of any emotion; i was merely helping people out. im not sure where in there i "lost grip."
Second - it is well known that there is a racist stereotype that black people like fried chicken. it is wrong, it is racist, and denying it is as bad as perpetuating it. Explain to me how your one example of an advertisement proves the stereotype false....
You don't like fried chicken and watermelon then there's something wrong with you. Watermelon and chicken are delicious regardless your race, if you're not into fried chicken and watermelon you need help.
Yes, they are delicious no matter what your race. It is racist to have a sketch with a black baby crying because he doesn't have watermelon and luring black kids off stage with watermelon. And obviously the artistic depiction is supposed to be similar to a monkey.
man, i'm just saying, i'm black and i love watermelon.
all my mexicanos comen tortillas, and my indians love curry, it's only racist if you put it in that light.
i mean, shit i love curry and tortillas...
the fact that the black kiddies are lured out with watermelon in this cartoon, yes is racist, but the fucking actual illustrations are way fucking worse.
@xXBalletLoverXx How can it be racist???? Are you kidding me asking that question? The black babies look grotesque. Lips all over the place. They're singing in front of a field of cotton and scatting Cab Calloway. Not funny at all.
You guys must remember! Back then in the 30's being extremely racist was okay. Even on kid cartoons.

I honestly don't think this is racist (maybe a bit) (you should really look up what racist means)
I however think that this is VERY STEREOTYPICAL. (maybe the black babies one was a tad over, considering the cotton field in the background)

b) Where did the uploader find this if it was banned?

The same way you found it, just because it's banned from TV doesn't mean it isn't still around.

Because that's basically how they were seen back then. There was no racial equality.

btw - for a more modern perspective on the watermelon, think black people and fried chicken - equally offensive and similar origins

You're an egocentric idiot. This has nothing to do with your like or dislike of watermelon or chicken. Also, you have poor punctuation skills.

Or, for another modern perspective, think Mexicans and tortillas, or Indians and curry, or Chinese and rice.
I mean, after all, who honestly thinks Chinese people actually eat rice?
I sometimes wonder, for the love of God, when will the world be rid of these racist food-related stereotypes.
Keep up the good work, robshookphoto. Together, we can make the world a better place.
