  • THIS ISN'T A SCREEN TEST, it's a black & white copy of a scene deleted from the final print of the movie. Screen tests don't have an orchestral score... :)

There's a color version of this scene also on youtube...missing a couple of closeups.

  • wait. that knife and dog story was about Charles and Adam, not Cal and Aron. this scene doesnt make sense...?

  • It's heartbreaking really, he was great!! he was very sensitive and could absolutely relate to this character, he did it wonderfully, my favourite film of him!

  • i kame

  • I feel quite disappointed the fact we can only witness only a small bit of his enormous talent! *sigh*

  • East of Eden=Jimmy's best film. BAR NONE.

  • What a waste. If only someone like his agent told him to give up racing until he made his place in Hollywood. Just put it aside for now until you make some movies, money, fame, etc.. Someone should have been telling him that.

  • He gave his all to everything he ever did...even screentests. What a shame this scene wasn't in the movie. Such sheer emotion in three minutes!

  • Every time I see an Elia Kazan film I think of Marlon Brando in Streetcar Named Desire and it makes it really difficult for me to appreciate any of the other classic Hollywood actors. Brando has ruined all these old movies for me because every time I watch them I just keep thinking "Brando would have done this better".

  • @KidBk313

Too bad because James Dean made his mark in East Of Eden...a Kazan film and did a great job in all 3 of the films he starred in.

  • My favorite actor! Jimmy Dean you are still the best!

  • This scene should've definately been in the movie, it's just excellent!

  • @dohyou oh no i didn't take any offence to it=) lol i even admitted i was jealous i cant have him. don't be depressed over somebody that has been dead for nearly 55 years. he is def that gorgeous for a straight guy to go gay for jimmy=) so yea i luv him!!! he's the best!!!!!!

  • @SamLuvsJamesDean Hell, I'm asexual and I would turn straight for James Dean in an heartbeat! I'm pretty sure ANYONE, straight guy, gay woman, ace like me, whatever, feels that way about Jimmy. :D

  • @WolfQueene wats asexual?

  • @WolfQueene asexual? like a moneran? you just split yourself in 2? awesome!

  • @dohyou who's jealous???? me??? I think anybody who cant have jimmy would be jealous. so if thats the case, then yes i am jealous!

  • @dohyou James Dean is one of the most gorgeous guys that ever appeared on screen, your obviously blind if u think he's ugly. everybody thinks hes handsome=) i like to see your idea of great.

  • This may well be the greatest screen test performance I've seen. Dean is untouchable.

  • @marcalu no, it's a screen test x

  • Was this scene in the movie, because I just saw the movie and I don't remember seeing this?

  • @dohyou LOL

  • Iv'e seen this before, thanks!

  • 0:47 - 1:00, ooooh that hits you right in the heart, or the gut, or somewhere.

You can tell Aron has never had a mind of his own or a will that went against his father's. I think the majority of us can instead relate to Cal who have it hard because we have to live our own lives and do what's right for us, not for someone else.

  • I actually saw this yesterday on TCM and I really enjoyed it. I always thought Dean was a little overrated for Rebel without A Cause, but I liked East of Eden way better. I still have to see Giant though!

  • i luv that they put james dean in the dark for the first half! It shows what a real actor he was! You could still feel and hear the emotion that dean was conveying without having to look at his face! i luv it!

  • the last 40 seconds takes my breath away

  • Comment removed

  • I can't get over the range of emotions Dean shows on his face as Aron is telling him how "easy" it is to show love to someone..it's incredible. He conveys so much while hardly speaking a word. He just breaks my heart, there is no other way to put it. Such a talent.

  • imo, i think the background music is distracting. i think the scene would have been perfect w/o it.

  • @alexanderleewang He makes it go away...

  • oh man how i wish james dean was alive he would be 79 in 2010.

  • Is that a 'Recorder' he starts playing?! I haven't seen one of those since Elementary School!

  • @init4mojo Yeah, that is a recorder. A fan actually gave that to him. Kinda cool that he actually used it.

  • dam my foot hurts!!!

  • Ugh.....gutwrenching.

  • Dean was the most amazing actor ever. This was a screntest for his first movie, and he's already better than any other actor. Imagine how amazing he'dve been if he would've lived on to make other films.

  • This hurts my heart :(.

  • i think thats one of my favourite films ever

  • @clem6593 agree, one of...

  • so bad ass1

  • His face...what can i say...he was outstanding and in my eyes the best actor ever cause he had someting special...it is hard to put words to it but we all see it...

  • what a beautiful test...my god, no one will ever compare to him. not in a million years.

  • very great to study

  • THIS SCENE WASN'T IN THE MOVIE

  • its a SCREEN TEST thats why....

  • its pretty impressive that james dean made three BIG hit movies in only the short 18 months as an actor.. he was one heck of a guy

  • Te extraño.

  • I wish they had not deleted this scene from the movie.

  • The caption for this video looks like he's intently playing a clarinet.

  • He breaks my heart. Brilliant.

  • Indeed...

  • @Cashello Laughing...

  • its a parable of cain and abel, duh

  • no shit!

  • tothedogs2, I also think there's a similarity to the story of the Prodigal Son.

  • he never ceases to amaze me with his acting. The way he responds to the guy in this scene and can make one word like "how" have such meaning and emotion - it's astonishing. It's a rarity.

  • @wilpy1

Precisely. I concur. Riveting. Compelling. Zany. Enthralling. Any other words that critics use all the time because all they have is hot air?

  • So Newman went up for the part that Richard Davalos went up for and got. Had no idea until now. I'm glad the part went to Richard Davalos instead of Newman. Newman was good but Richard Davalos is perfect for this part. It's better balanced with Davalos rather than Newman. Not sure if Newman was a star at that point but it's obvious he was gonna be big, he had what it took. The movie didn't needed two people with that persona. The movie was cast perfectly. Elia Kazan knew what he was doing.

  • when he's playing that recorder that's a fricking hoot bahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!! OMG!

    i love jimmy sooooo much!

  • Supposedly Marlon Brando was convinced that James Dean was obsessed with him to the point he had to get a restraining order against Dean.

  • James DEan and Marlon Brando have said that montgomery clift was their favorite actor who left deep impressions on them.

  • how do you know his favorite actor was montgomery clift? i'm not, in any way, saying that's wrong, but i read everywhere it was brando.

  • Yeah, i had a biography on Dean and everything i read in it said it was always Brando.

  • actually dean's favorite actor was montgomery clift, he used to call clift all the time and just sit on the phone line listening to they way he talked. his favorite movie was A Place in the Sun.

  • fuck all the people who say dean stole brando's act...James dean didnt steal his act a bit, a little, or even at all... dean was more than a legened... thats why he's up there with the greats like elvis monroe and morrison and "brando" isnt. you live fast die young. thats how you become the best ever. period.

  • omg... i cry every time i warch this movie... dunno why?

  • because it's a good movie??

  • But Dean's character was evil at the same time- ever watched the whole film? He tried to buy the love of his dad- a mistake.

  • Evil? Just mislead, I think

  • On second thought think you're right- just mislead. I'm sure that the "head doctor" offices across the country are loaded with similar sibiling-rivalry cases. The most disturbing scene in the film is when Cal takes his brother to see his(presumed dead) mother- and the evil satisfaction Cal derived from it.

  • Hehe, evil again? Maybe just glee that his "bad side" had a source? To break his brother's illusions of him as out-of-place in their soon-to-be broken family?

  • He did have some bad in him but the part where he tries to give his dad the money, after all that work, is something that I thought was so touching, not the other way around

  • I think he was trying to show his dad that he knew the lettuce thing meant a lot to his father so he would make that money back for him. I think it was a loving and generous thought. "Buying his love" sounds great on the script, but it's not what he really did.

  • True.

  • you're stupid

  • I just want to give Cal a big hug. :/

  • Me too...

  • me 3

  • I love this! I've watched it several times on the dvd. It really shows what a talented actor James Dean was.
