@Corpzmaker91 Those are add ons to pro gram or "plug ins". Depending on your set or morals you can either buy them or download them illegally from sites such as The Pirate Bay using UTorrent
Just looking at cubase again makes me SO GLAD I stopped using it, everything is so cryptic and a pain to use, its like skinning a goat. Presonus software is so much better, and actually uses windows and terms that are written in english.
Thank you very much!...... though I'm afraid I don't understand many things you say, it's because this kind of quality tutorials are simply not avaylable in my own language...., shame for me! anyway I will have to hire an interpreter lol!
I'm still wondering after watching this tutorial that didn't teach me too much but what I understood by using common sense, really: are these the only two options of making (drum) tracks: recording live and clicking one and one instrument manually? Are there no form of say pattern-based automation/macro, so that I don't have to copy/paste like 20 times for every instrument? I think there should have been a "fill in" function or something...
@somedump Try out Beatcraft. It has more editing capabilities than ez and others, and in a nicer user friendly interface in my opinion. And using external libraries like beta monkey drums makes it an amazing drum machine to work with. Hope it helps.
So you seriously have to manually aim your cursor on every single instrument you want played making a track in Cubase? Isn't that just extremely userunfriendly?
@somedump Thea man. I feel the same way. As I see it there are 3 ways to use cubase to programme drum tracks: - manually asign each instrument; - use midi controlers to asign the instruments and them play with the asign functions to create paterns. - drag from the plugin´s library the file you want (patern; breakdown;fill, etc) and use it that way. Actually there is a fourth way; using an electronic commaded drum (midi drum) two use the sound libraries from this VSTs and record them into any DAW.
@somedump Youre welcome. One advice (that is what I do-and I´m no expert :) ), try using the "pre made" rhythm/break/fill samples that come in EZ and other VSt´s as much as possible, and if you need to tweak some part of your drums on your song to your tastes, use beatcraft to create you own unique fill/break or whatever. It works good that way for me.
@somedump That is why I spoke about Beatcraft, because although you still have to asign functions to instruments, the GUI layout is way easier and faster to use, with the goal being quick editable patterns, at your choice. You may copy, paste, double tracks and whatever you remenber with it also.
We never know, maybe in a near future the software will evolve and it will become easier. Nothing like using the real instrument though (acoustic or midi commanded drums).
i just got cubase 5.1 and ez drummer and i defo need some tutorial videos. this was pretty useful but only becuase i watch it over and over and over and over to see visually what your doing. clicking a load of buttons and opening some windows and then saying " just like that " isnt really a tutorial.
@ratm4Lui VST is a plug-in most of the times... so it's actually both of what you are saying, and you didn't give an answer, but a question... learn english please...
awesome lesson man .. but i've got a problem .. i can't do the graphique drumming.. the thing that u r doing in the video(i can but i hear no sound .. i've completely follwed u with no mistakes) but I can play directly the drums with the Drum set .. i can hear it .. i can't really find what the problem is .. would be very grateful .. if u can help .... say i want to make a cover and i have a midi from guitar pro for the drums.... how do i go about recording that on cubase with ezdrummer? i would appreciate the help.
@HateCrewHound well, u need to import the midi file, and then if im right, u can select an output for that midi file, if u select EZDrummer as an output, you should get your EZdrummer sounds
i've got a problem .. i can't do the graphique drumming.. the thing that u r doing in the video(i can but i hear no sound .. i've completely follwed u with no mistakes) but I can play directly the drums with the Drum set .. i can hear it .. i can't really find what the problem is .. would be very grateful .. if u can help .... If you are "drawing" the pattern (using your mouse to mark each hit) I strongly suggest to desactivate the grid and draw zoomed it. That way each hit won't sound exactly in the time so it will sound more humanized. Be sure to zoomed in, otherwise the range is too small.
lets say i have two midi tracks and have highlighted track 1, when i select a part on midi 2 i would like the track 2 get selected automatically, like in older cubase versions, how can i setup this?
im really sorry but i really couldnt do this because i couldnt understand what your saying on some of the parts cuz ur talking too fast. its not your fault but please if u could speak slower.
Did you notice the green-like midi tracks around 1:41?
Add an effects track with a reverb to your liking and send the midi snare to that track. You can decide how much of the snare you want to send to that reverb-effects track.
If you need any more help, just send me a message.
Fills and rolls can make for tricky subject matter to be honest. IMHO the best way to approach them is to use a key board and loop a section of the track, say 4 bars, with the last bar being were you want to do your fill. Then set midi record and play a little bit at a time until you get something useable. Once you have the basic idea you can tweak it in. Fills and rolls are more about artistic ideas than programming and therefore are far easier to play via keyboard.
can anyone direct me to a vid showing how to connect an m-audio (O2 25 key to be exact) controller in cubase? I have a set of tutorials which even shows how to add devices but i cannot figure for the life of me how to add this.
I know it cant be THAT difficult. At least it's only 1 or 2 steps in reason, I just want to do it in cubase for a try. :) thx
This should be fairly simple - on the track/lane view create or select an existing Midi track. If the left hand pane is not visible - use the inspector button to show the midi track info. then simply select the device on the "in:" drop down box.
If you can't see it there - re install the O2 drivers. and start again. Remember any midi controller has to be plugged in and ready BEFORE launching cubase.
This EZDrummer is good if you are making acoustic fills or arrangements, but if you want something more flexible for dance music, i recommend using Izotope IDRUM (now for Windows also )and if you have a sort of powerfull machine or want to have more control on the drums (fx and tricks) use Battery 3. If you want to work as hard as a producer, xperiment with these two and render your combinations so you can use them later as rex loops. Google about it, it is all about music, put your life into it

hello, I just have to ask you, but how can u add new synts, drum maps etc to cubase? I cant find it anywhere! and Ive got no clue. (would like to have a detailed explanation or a link to where I can find it) Thanks :)
Thank you so much..i was having trouble with the programming of the drum patterns (without using grooves) until now! And when my MIDI controller arrives today it will be a breeze! Thanks!
I haven't used Halion but as it is a sampler you should be able to use it in the same way provided you have drum samples.
Set it up in the same way ie.
Select output as Halion and apply the GM drum map to the track. The drum map might require a little tweaking/renaming but the basic drum sounds ie, bass, snare, hats, cymbals etc. will be there.
My cubase doesn't seem to find Ezdrummer :S when I'm about to choose drums when I've pressed F11, I can choose LM-7, but not Ezdrummer. Anyone know what can be wrong?
Just to clarify - Ezdrummer is not part of the Cubase package. You will need to purchase this separately. Once Ezdrummer is installed cubase will list it in the F11 vsti dialog box.
If you have installed Ezdrummer and it is not showing up then it is possible that you have installed the vsti information to the wrong directory. This is normally something like C:\Program Files\Steinberg\VstPlugins and the install process should ask you this.
Alright. Yes, I have both Cubase and ezdrummer. Hmm.. that might be the problem, that i've installed it in the wrong directory. Thank you for your help.
Heheh. Thanks for the feedback. I did the titles for a laugh. These things are normally so boring I just wanted I just wanted to lighten the mood at the beginning.
goport, can you tell me how you repeated the same beat you created at around 5:14 in the video. I record with a click but it doesn't make more of the same beat if you know what I mean. Thanks.
Oh thanks. After watching it over a couple times I could hear you pressing the keys on the keyboard to do that. Is there anyway, without using the music keyboard, to copy a short beat (not the grooves) and keep pasting it without having to continually press the drum notes on the grid?
1. put the cursor in object selection mode by pressing "1" and highlighting the area you wish to copy and then copy (ie Ctrl + C)
2. Position the play marker - you can click on the play line in the track/ruler bar at the top and drag it to the correct position where you wish to paste or simply left click on the destination in the track ruller bar thing at the correct location.
3. Paste (ie Ctrl + V). Pasting will always paste where the play line marker is located.

great tutorial, if have a question,
if you want to add reverb to say just a snare, and not the kick or hi hat. how do you asign this in cubase sx 3?
since the entire drum kit is all together, would you have to seperate each into a new track??
if possible, could you a tutorial on adding effects to drums.

Dumb question, can you use halion vst on Cubase studio 4 to compose drums or you need a seperate drum vst like ezdrummer. thanks!
Dynomite101 3 years ago
I haven't used Halion but as it is a sampler you should be able to use it in the same way provided you have drum samples.
Set it up in the same way ie.
Select output as Halion and apply the GM drum map to the track. The drum map might require a little tweaking/renaming but the basic drum sounds ie, bass, snare, hats, cymbals etc. will be there.
Good luck.

Thanks.

I just played the bass an snare drum on a music keyboard. provided you set the snap to grid to 16ths it should work. Let me know how you get on.
goport 4 years ago
Oh thanks. After watching it over a couple times I could hear you pressing the keys on the keyboard to do that. Is there anyway, without using the music keyboard, to copy a short beat (not the grooves) and keep pasting it without having to continually press the drum notes on the grid?

Simplest way is to:
1. put the cursor in object selection mode by pressing "1" and highlighting the area you wish to copy and then copy (ie Ctrl + C)

Nevermind, I got it to copy and paste.
