  • MrBenster12345 I have a red light too :(

  • am i the only personin the world who had the ylod and a red flashing light? or does any1 else have a red blinking power light?

  • Thanks to you I'm back playing on ps3 I'm so glad I didn't send it in or bought a new ps3 !!! And people buy the artic sliver 5 thermal compound 1 of the best thermal paste to use!

  • My ps3 back fm the dead thanks to you man! By the way the artic sliver 5 the way to go!!!

  • IT WORKS!!! REALLY!!! INCREDIBLE!!!!! I¨M PLAYING NOW!!!!! THANKYOU VERY MUCH!!!! I¨M SPANISH, SEE YOUUU!!!!

  • REBALL.

  • @boomy818 I do reballs! I will try to make a video of me doing a PS3.

  • just fixed my 40gb ps3 with this - thanks very much!

if your model's like mine (H), you'll want to pull off the power supply before disconnecting the blu-ray ribbon and wlan transmitter, and you don't have to pull off the back cover to get the motherboard out (you have to apply some gentle upward pressure once the screws are all out though, to unstick it from the old thermal paste).

  • I used this video to fix my 40gb PS3. Works perfectly now. Thanks.

  • Don´t worry dudes, you don´t own the hardware, you paid for a license to use it. Take it back to the store and they will replace it free of charge. Corporations are smart, aren´t they? :-P

  • Can anyone tell me the max capacity HDD and RPM for a hard drive upgrade?

  • @RedAssailant003 Any 2.5 inch Laptop HDD will work. 5200 RPMs or 7400 RPMs(7400 will make it run hotter). Capacity doesn't matter so if you find a 500 gig Laptop HDD it will work... I have a 320 and a Terabyte if that helps :)

  • does playing a game with larger gb ,such as battlefield 3 , greaten the chance of having the ylod back ???

  • @tlkl1029 no

  • Comment removed

  • is this a fix for short term only ? i've heard lots of people say this only lasts for around 2 months .. wouldn't this process ensure your playstation lasts for another life span as your re-soldering the CPU and GPU plus re-applying the thermal grease. why 2 months ?

  • I wanna fix it so i can get my data back (videos and stuff that cant be made ever again) does removing the hard drive mean the hard drive will need to be formatted the instant i take it out?

  • bro thats allot of freakig steps how ur going to put them back

  • hey great advice man, it worked like a charm but now sometimes my screen freezes and turns all pixelated (hard to describe) but i can still hear the sound of me clicking through the menu, any idea what this might be from and if there's anything i can do by taking it back apart to fix it? Thanks a lot

  • @quicksilver940 i think you might be describing the green snow effect..... dont no much about it but sounds like u got it

  • aaaahhhhHHHHHHHHH (angelic choir)!!! My PS3 is back... great advice, bro!

  • thank you so much my ps3 is now alive

  • I will got to buy that fluid thing and a screwdriver tomorrow and I'm going to try this hope it works !! (wish me luck I don't screw up)

  • ? i took my motherboard out was having problems taking it out the board made like 3 to 4 cracking sounds what does that mean ??

  • Bought my Original unit in '07, son tried to turn it on last night and I got the flashing light, Searched google and found your video.

Did what you did, and guess what? It's ALIVE!

Thanks for the help! Nicely done!

  • @DEEV8R i got mine in 06 so ya same problem just i am the son in yur situation

  • thank you thank you thank you...worked like a charm!

  • Great videos. Thank you. They saved my 40 gig. With the repair as well as some ventilation modifications to the case, it's now running better than ever. You may want to add in the description that you need thermal paste. I think you forgot to mention it in the video. Being kind of a computer noob, i didn't know i needed it until it was already disasembled. Just a suggestion. Thanks again.

  • Man I did it, and now my ps3 won't turn on. The red light is on but It won't respond to the power button. Is it a bad placement of the upper case? which makes contact with the board?

  • @techitow nvm I fixed the issue : ) thx for the video

  • You Sir, are a life saver! I did everything in your video and now my ps3 is running like a champ! Thank you so much!

  • Comment removed

  • Thank you for these videos you saved me I fixed it and its working fine thanks

  • Amazing!! Followed this step by step and it worked :) Woo!! Hoo!!

  • CaN I use a iron

  • Great video... started video. Watched my 9 yr.old son disassemble console... I heated the board for him... and watched him put it back together. Plugged it up. All working with him smiling ear to ear.

  • I did it, it startedworking then cut off about 10 minutes after. How do I fix it?

  • so, i have a question, not related to the video. i have an 80GB ps3 with no memory card slots and 2 USB slots, and had it for just over 3 years, never opened it up, and had no problems. any suggestions on maintaining or cleaning it now before anything bad happens? thanks!

  • hayy im going to try this and does it fix permenant of a long time ?

    Thanks

  • Hey I have a 60gb model and I fixed it many times from YLOD. It works fine when I play my other games but when it comes to playing Uncharted 3 or COD modern warfare 3 it shuts off automatically. So what part do I replace if your ps3 shuts off on you automatically during gameplay?

  • Does any one know the exact term of what this is Called???? He Says ReFlow - of cpu and gpu....is there and accronym or saying for this exactly....thnx

  • could i use a 932 degrees farenheight hot gun

  • my ps3 fat did this.but this video wasn't made when she died so i had to be a sad panda.

  • Please add the items that you need in the description... That would make this tut a whole lot easier :)

  • Is this dangerous do I need to wear gloves?

  • what kind of screw driver does he use to unscrew the hard drive @ 9:35-9:58?? PLZ HELP HAVE A DEALINE!!!

  • Hey, me and my friend did this and it worked perfectly. Thank you very much. But i only have one annoying, problem that occured after we fixed it. After about 5 minutes the fan go from normal speed, to high to full. What causes this? It's just that I cant watch movies on it because its just as loud as that cleaning function. And the console isnt even hot. Not at all! Help would be much appreciated. Thanks on advance.

TL:DR: Fan is really loud without the PS3 beeing hot. How to fix this problem?

  • Very solid walk through. did it yesterday, took me a while to cleanit, it was very dirty and dusty, used artic silver 5, put it back together and it work great. Great video, thanks for the great walk through

  • Done it and now my ps3 is up and running again. Thanks!

  • Did the process, now mine at least turns on but I get a screen that states cannot start. The correct hard disk was not found. Any tips? I'll recheck all connections.

  • Good tutorial, thankx for the help. I must say though 360's are much easier to fix when they have this same problem. Just unplig the cooling fan and let them over heat and that fixes it fairly easy.

  • thats what happen to me i went on vaction for bout a month i comeback turn it on YLOD lol.

  • with 450$ i can get the best ps3 out their ans games

  • A note, the bolt holding the top cover on is a tamper proof torx bit which means that it has to have a hole in the center of it in order to take the screw out. Or mine did anyway.

  • I followed every step to a tee and my P3 works again... Thank you very much. P.S do not use a credit card to smear the thermal compound. Just a dab in the center and in each corner so it looks like a 5 on a dice. Thank you very much for your help..

  • This video helped me out a lot..unfortunately for me I didn't have a heating gun and didn't want to spend any money on it. What I did do though was put the motherboard in the oven at 550 degrees for 90 seconds. I know it sounds crazy but it worked out for me and my Ps3 works now.

  • well...45minutes later and I have the ylod, so idk what happened. my ps3 is a goner..oh well.

  • Does Sony realize how many fucking people have this problem? I'm guessing that they're fully aware of the numbers, but they just don't give a shit because they're still making a great deal of money

  • i got a 80 gb and the i got the yellow light i fixed the yellow light but i broke a piece on the inside can i just get the piece i broke from another 80 gb ps3 and replace the broke piece with the good piece will it work

  • Wat iz the size of the torps screw plz RESPOND URGENT

  • Is this a permanent fix? Because i tried it and two days later it just came back again. Please help.

  • @V3g3T4r14nZ0mB13 Did you do it right with the compound? dabs? not smear with a card

  • @ThinkUGotIt Then how else are you supposed to apply the thermal paste?

  • @V3g3T4r14nZ0mB13 If you want a PERMANENT fix, you have to have some one reball it. Gonna cost around 80-100 dollars but that thing should never over heat AGAIN!

    Hope it helps

  • Ylod only appears when I try to play a Blu ray game =(

  • uhmm how could this thing happen? and could anyone tell me what is that orange light bleeping beside the usb ports in my ps3? is that normal?

  • @123nicanor Yes that is normal

  • HELP. i restore default settings on my ps3 then it asks me to connect it to control and then press ps home button but nothing happens. anyone know what to do

  • i have done this whole process before many time and i had it working for a bout a month and left it at my house for 3 days unplayed. and when i got back it broke again after about an hour and a half of playing. i have done this procedure many times since then. i have used the heat gun on 750-1000 degrees heat one the heat gun part. i am at a complete loss. help would be grately appriciated. thanks

  • @sonicxforlife I did this three times, First time it lasted 2 days, Second time less than a day, and the third time 5 minutes after turning it on.. went and bought the slim lol

  • Amazing Thanks. Worked for me first time and im a complete novice. Dont care if i have to do this more than once, at least my ps3 works and i never had to pay sony anything. Thanks again.

  • just let your fucking console cool down and stop playing it so much

  • @mtvblade787 That's not the reason why these consoles break.

I sometimes go weeks without even turning my PS3 on. And when I do have it on, it's usually only for an hour or two at a time.

I really don't game much on my PS3.

  • @djwhetzel sill people should get more sun besides sitting on there ass playing video games

  • im bord

  • @mtvblade787

With such keen insight, surely your talents are misspent in your current profession. There simply must be a brilliant, rewarding future for you in hardware design.

  • I just did this I used a blowdryer for like 30mins did not work y

  • @rudyalbert27 I don't mean to sound rude, but it's probably because you can't read directions.

  • @rudyalbert27 errm did u do it in a swirl motion and put thermal paste on da cpu an gpu

  • @rudyalbert27 Hair dryers do not get hot enough. You need an actual heating iron

  • i stripped the blue fuckin screw bbbbaaassssttttaaarrrdddd

  • THANK YOU. It worked.

I used a $20 hot air blower from Home depot that had a 1200 and 700 degree heat settings. Used 700 of course and I was just a little more careful. $7 for the thermal grease compound and $20 for the heat blower. Saved a TON! had to drill out the blue screw. Already stripped from Game stop refurb purchase. ha. Great video

  • ok so i understand why it does it and i fixed mine a coulpe months ago and it just yellow lighted again. why does it do it again so soon?

  • Thanks so much dude, this worked for me and my bro. Great video!!!

I was a bit sceptical but I'm so glad to be able to back up my Skyrim save games, as are others who had saves on my ps3. Literally hours of game play resurrected.

  • is it worth fixing the ylod???? or do yall recommend buying a new ps3?

  • Nobody open there ps3 and try this repair because when I tried it I fucked up and lost some off the screws and then didn't ow how to put it back toghter the first time and then I got it and put it ack toghter, but for some reason my ps3 won't turn on atall now and back in 2011 I went and bought the slim which is much better than the fat. WARNING DO NOT OPEN YOU PS3 AND TRY TO REPAIR IT YOURSELF BECUASE IT WON'T LAST FOR EVER GET IT DO E BY A PROFESSIONAL OR SONY!

  • @ThisSyndicate niceee namee

  • @ThisSyndicate Not that hard to do, just take photos and have safe places to put you're screws as you go. Also, if it had YLOD then it shouldn't really bother you too much because it wasn't working to begin with. I was just glad to be able to back up my save games when I rez'd mine, of course it won't last forever, but hopefully long enough to transfer some prized data.

  • @ThisSyndicate sounds more like YOU problem than anything else. If you dont have the skills, I agree dont take it apart. It is not that hard thou, doesnt say alot about you. You said yourself you fuck up, lost screws, and didnt know how to put it together. YOUR FAULT this method is proven.

  • if your somewhere around ny could u do it ill pay i dont wanna risk :(

  • I got lost at the 7min mark, lol.

  • Did this for my 1st Gen, 40Gig PS3, put it back together and it turned on and worked for one full day then went back to the yellow light, is my PS3 done or do i need to do this technique everytime YLOD comes?

  • what is the screw driver called for the one under the warranty sticker? thanks please

  • great video. I followed it to a T. I saw other YLOD fixes but this one looked like the best way to do it. And it worked perfectly watching all parts. great job.

  • i just got done using this video set to repair a ps3 for the 3rd time lol, thanks for putting these up. (although the audio could be a little louder as it is difficult to hear you in the vid). any suggestions as to how to prevent having to do this again as i have repaired one system twice and another one once

  • It worked! Just tried it out. Thank you!!

  • it worked but the next day it didnt :O

  • @BiggieSmallsTheNigga same thing happened to me

  • All because of shitty douchebags saying PS3 is overpriced.. ¬.¬

So what did they do? Ofcourse get rid of the awesome and way better vans the old school 60GB's had.

This is the third time happening and the money I paid for the

PS3 total was €600. I bought it for €400. If they didn't make it cheaper I could've got one for around €500 and it would've been cheaper

  • @djwhetzel My ps3 got YLOD last night, its mostly because of overheating considering I have been playing it non stop for the past week,Will this work for a 40GB model?

  • Works awesome had a first gen ps3 its up and working like new if you follow the video it should work on the first time

  • Eddie your right. It doesn't happen on slims.

  • THANKYOU!!!! This fix may PS3 60GB!!! I did use a hairdryer on max heat for 10mins on the CPU and GPU (front and back of motherboard). I will invest in a heat gun if this happens again. Thanks again!!

  • Wow PS3 is the shittiest consoles of this generation.

Try Xbox 360 for a superior console without bugs

  • @Xbox360fanboyer

Wow, you're one of the shittiest trolls of this generation. Try harder.

  • your videos are great and easy to follow! You fixed my ps3! i just have a question. does it work the same for the ps3 slim?

  • @3ddie2288 Someone correct me if I am wrong but I thought this was fixed for the PS3 Slim

  • Yo Do U Use Thermal Grease? Or Wht?

  • Comment removed

  • $150 for a mistake they have made? lmao what a rip off

  • @stecumoo fuckin chinese lol

  • @stecumoo especially since you can fix this yourself for free(if you have the right tools)

  • thanks for the video. My system had its last breath yesterday and has the same problem as in the begin of ur video. The YLOD. I just had a couple of questions, what do u mean by bad power supply? I live in a building from the 30's but had recently put new electricity wires all around the appartment. If I buy a new PS3, how can i prevent such things with new equipment like an amplifier or a PS3? If I send my broke PS3 to Sony, do I lose all my data if they send me a replacement?

  • I hope Sony doesn't use WD HDDs in their consoles.... I absolutely HATE Western Digital.... Had 3 of the same brand break after 3 months of normal use. lots of data lost.....

  • Barely happens to me and i fix it by unplugging the ps3 never lost data or damaged the ps3

  • How long does it last?

  • worked perfectly

keep video next to you and pause and play as you go

    thanks!

  • Hey! Thank you so much for making this video!! My boyfriend just used it to fix his PS3 & he is VERY grateful. He took it all apart like you showed, bought a heat gun and everything, put it back together and BLAMMO! It works!! So... yeah, just wanted to say thank-you so much! You're awesome!

  • do you lose any memory or saved data during this process.

  • cud u use a hairdryer

  • @IzZUnTouchAble Please read the description and leave the annotations on while watching.

Hint, watch around the 1:00 mark while leaving the annotations on.

  • @lilrival6189 you can get one of those cooling fans for the ps3 off ebay for like £9 or $12

  • Does this work for the flashing/blinking red light?

  • Well I got mine (40 gb 3 years 9 months old) traded with a NEW ps3 slim 160 GB for 140 euros ! =D I think it was much more worth than trying to fix mine since it was already very old and I also doubted how much it would have worked since I didn't have the appropriate tools. And at least I do also have 1 year warranty aswell ;) + a new dualshock controller

  • Just did this on the dead Ps3 60Go of my brother yesterday and IT WORKED!! Thanks :D

  • @sidewaysmedia01 dont you have to pay for it?

  • Did this step for step and it worked first time, thanks man! You were right about the hard drive screw though, I didn't have the right screwdriver piece and ended up striping the head so I had to drill it out but hey still works even have all my save data. I can't thank you enough for this very well done tutorial.

  • bro what if you dont use a heat gun and just apply the artic silver will it work please tell me i got a ps3 it goes on but overheats fast then error sign comes up and then turns off i dont know why can you help me please ?

  • what model are you working on? would help if you disclosed.

  • @SyKoClanHD it's either 60 gig or 80 gig. both have the same process

  • @SyKoClanHD I actually say in the video what model it is.

    Watch around the 2:45 mark.

  • Does a blow dryer count as a heat gun?

  • Ok i have the original 80 gig and i got the light around the end of summer. I want to know if the light is from the hard drive or the system itself. So if its the system can i still use my hard drive in a new ps3 and keep my saved data or is it the drive and im gonna lose all my save data?

  • Just wanted to say THANKS, it worked! I followed parts 1-3 today because I was a recent victim of this merciful act known as the "yellow light of death." I would have never of known what to do had I not found this great video. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Hope my PS3 continues to run like a cheetah.

  • IT WORKED thanks soo much man, i love you

  • Fuck this im getting a xbox

  • fuck sony and bethesda. twice i had to delete my skyrin save file because of in game crashing glitches. third time through i hit level 43 and ps3 decides to crash AND I LOSE ALL MY FILES FOR EVERYTHING OVER THE LAST 4 YEARS! FUCKING COCKSUCKERS!!!

  • @DustyBallz777 buy for pc or 360?

  • I tried this method twice and i followed it exactly but when I turned my ps3 back on it only works for 20 mins or so and cuts back off with the ylod again. Anybody else has the same problem? or is there any other solution I can do?

  • How many times does this work? i fixed it about 2 months ago but it broke again. Wondering if it will work multiple times.

  • I fixed mine and it lasted about a week..

  • Dude i just hope that this works. I had my 80Gb PS3 from the day it was released, and it broke today.

  • @obliwion same. just got skyrim for christmas with a new control and doesnt work

  • @obliwion exactly the same has happened to me and its christmas

  • @YOURTUBE150 Feel ya bro... I'm not going to buy a new PS3 for some time even if it doen't work.

  • Xbox = RRoD

    PS3 = YLoD

Wii = Let us sit back and watch what happens.

  • @Trooper45a Of course a non-HD console isn't going to have as many problems. smh...

  • Is There Any Other Way To Fix It?

  • what is YLOD ??

  • @ladose1000 the YLOD is when ur ps3 ever overheat or for some other reason your ps3 dies if u get the YLOD then its really bad ow and the YLOD blinks at u just like the red light that indacates the ps3 is turning off. ow one one thing its like the RROD that the xbox has but with ps3 they call it yellow light of death hope this helps

  • @snake456100 thank u

  • This fix works but it is not permanent, you get the YLOD a couple of months later at very best, so it is not what I'm looking for.

My 40 gb ps3 I've had for 4 year got the Ylod 2 weeks ago. But even though it is old, I didnt use it that much.

My only option now seems to be, to buy a new for $300(getting it repaired buy sony cost the same in my country) but i hate having to spend that amount of money on something i already used to have.

  • what screw driver do you use first and what size

  • Good video but unfortunately it didn't work for me. My ps3 only turns off when I try to play a game or a movie. I leave it on for a long time and it doesn't turn off. I checked the power supply and it works, i get 12V. I don't know what to do, any ideas??

  • I've fixed my PS3 twice now. Back in March I had the YLOD and it worked for like 9 months untill yesterday and I fixed it in 30 minutes :). Thanks Whetzel

  • Thank you very much it work!!!!!! Pleas let us know if that other silver compound work better than the ceramic one.

  • lol you lot might aswell trade in your ps3 for a slim no ylod

  • how the fuck do you open the 1st screw when u have to take out the stand peg thingy!!

  • this was very helpful thanx dude!

  • yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah thanx man it worked fer me u rok

  • Thanks alot man fixed my ps3

  • Worked great for me!!!!!!!!!! Thanks alot man!

  • just done it and seems to be working so far i have the 60G going to back up then trade it in to a shop

  • THANK you it worked

  • did you lose your memory after removing the hard drive and fixing the playstation?

  • i did this but when i turn on the ps3 5 mins later it says its too hot and turns off, i did this multiple times, can anyone tell what to do?

  • I have fixed my ps3 countless times over the years and recently got the ylod again, I followed the steps same as always, but the yellow light of death remains. I recently have had an electrical problem involving a damaged ribbon cable, but I have shortended it and it worked. I was wondering if other ribbon cables could be the cause of the prolonged yellow light or is my ps3 down for the count? I could really use your help.

  • I used a hairdryer and fanned the left- back air vent for about 2 minutes and it started working again. Worth a try...

  • If i fix my ps3 like this, how long before I get the Ylod again?

and when I get it again, can i repeat this fix?

  • @cesarG222 Mine went again.. Lasted a while. But not as long as i would of hoped. Few months. 2nd time was extremely easy... And works again :)

  • Yellow light of death? Lol this is hilarious. Xbox has the red sing, ps3 has the yellow light. Rings can kill, lights cause seizures.

  • I'll just pay the 150...

  • Im sure you get this alot but thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Saved me so much money! I had everything needed as well so it didn't even cost me extra for that torx screwdriver the thermal paste or the heat gun. Just a few hours of my time.

  • I've had YLOS 4 times now, The PS3 has been reflowed (2nd and 3rd time with flux) any suggestions or may it be time to buy a new PS3. Must add this is 1 of the origionals European spec.

mark.devenney AT hotmail DOT co DOT uk

  • how long does the it take for the YLOD to come back if you use this way?

  • @SNOWY13165 few months
