The rioting was committed during the Tibetan Uprising Day celebrations and were orchestrated from those protests to bring media attention to Tibet and to cause trouble before the Beijing Olympics. Monks in Sichuan even had firearms. The Tibetan protests turned into ethnic violence. Han Chinese and Hui Muslim businesses were exclusively attacked by racist Tibetan mobs and it continued for weeks. Women were burned alive in Lhasa and men on bicycles had their heads smashed in with rock boulders.

Chinese supporters will claim Tibetan has been "liberated" and turned into some sort of people's paradise. This creates a situation in which any Tibetans showing anger and frustration (or violence) MUST be doing so under the direction of the DL. I know that in China, the minority groups are actually treated better. Tibetans are allowed to wear pocket knives into the city without punishment.
