Pigs are some of the cleanest animals around, and in the wild keep their mess areas away from their food areas (which not a lot of animals do, like horses or cows for example) and only in the small confines of factory farming captivity do they have no room to do this. Also, pigs keep themselves clean with mud, which is something even humans do.

I don't think pork is any worse than, say, chicken, which can carry salmonella if not cooked properly. The very reason as to why we now cook most meats now; to make them more safe for eating!
