Actually, they green screened the axe man and replaced her with a CGI stunt double, then aged the film and added post-shake in After Effects. Text book VFX really.
this is fake, you can see the frame change as he raises his axe to the highest point. the actor who played the queen also was replaced with a dummy, and you can see the body's position change slightly. but its good work for a long time ago.
I can't actually believe that some people think this is real. She was executed in the late 16th century under Elizabeth I's rule, no electricity hence no television.
The last public beheading in England was in 1747 of Lord Lovatt, a Jacobite rebel.
that's like me saying 'the scene from the exorcist is fake'.... course it's fake you muppet....Do you even know what period Mary queen of scots was executed?
lol.... camera at that time was more faster like the Charlie Chaplin movies and u can see it`s clipt right after he`s cutting her head off with the face up XD Nice try.
The least they could of done would of been to put the dummy face down lmao.. and absolutely no blood effects - they had ketchup back then. For christ sake they could of used any colored liquid, as it was black and white.. There was plenty of filming done much better before 1900, like boxing matches.
Back then people thought this was amazing. This was very first special effect, happened before there was sound, happened before people were making anything longer than a 12 minute movie.
This was the very first special effect done in movies. This effect was achieved by stopping the camera after the monarch rested her head on the block and just as the executioner was about to strike. She was replaced with a dummy and the shooting resumed as the ax descended. This ability to stop the action and start it again without any apparent temporal break would prove to be one of the key elements in shaping the stylistic conventions of movies.
I'm really amused that some people think this is real! Mary, Queen of Scots was executed in 1587. This is a Victorian RE-ENACTMENT filmed in 1895! Special effects, nothing more grisly than that. Shows the need for history to be taught in schools
this is probrably animated its goog but it took 2 blows of the axe one hit the back of her head and one chopped it off if your wondering how i know this information its my project at school
Why do people think this is real? I guess that's a compliment to the special effects here, which is quite impressive considering that it was made in 1895.
This short film, titled "The Execution of Mary, Queen of Scots", from 1895 is an short film. I in no way see that the poster of this video tried to pretend it is an actual video from the actual execution of Mary Stuart. It's amazing how you go on with life if you think that the title of everything is completely representative of what it is. Do you also think that the Showtime show "The Tudors" is claiming to be completely real and filmed in the Tudor period because it has the name "The Tudors"?
Do you think they're pretending they got actual film footage from pirates in the 1700s when they come out with a movie titled "Pirates of the Caribbean"? Do you also believe that they are trying to trick us into thinking that they have real footage of Santa Claus every time a new kid's Santa movie comes out? Brilliant comment.
Mary Stuart was executed in 1587 and i doubt there were any televisions at that time and the industrial revolution had not even been born...its always very exciting to know about events in history and why we are here today
It is rumored that Thomas Edison invited the time machine and traveled back to time to film various events in history, this film is one of them. He even filmed the dinosaurs, but they film was ruined in a fire.
It's only a film made in 1895. It's known to be the first film using special effects... And many people believed that the actress died during the scene... xDD
It's funny how some people are actually arguing whether this is real or not...
Alfred Clark (the director) stopped filming and changed Queen Mary (the actress) with a life size dummy. Then he started filming again. That's how the film was done.
This is fake, Mary Queen of Scots died in the 1500 not in the 1800. This is fake. U can also tell that just before the chop off they have cut and put a doll there instead.
its fake because the picture changes fast or just paste together to look like someone is chopped of there head the person is being changed the lsat one is a dummy
Wow! I suppose this "movie" was made to show off what this "new" technology could do! Imagine everyone, that you've never seen a movie before...a moving picture. And you see this "execution" happening. You wouldn't be able to tell it was fake. That's the genius of it.

ALL WRONG!!!!!! It took two strikes of the axe to behead poor Mary, and when the executioner picked up her head it fell away, as she was wearing a wig.
actually did you know it took 3 strikes and it was on a low block which meant she had to lay down (like in elizabeth the golden age) and it had no rising, so the neck didnt stick up thus making at least 2 strikes ubove.
nevermind, I didn't read the comments, I now know that they didn't actually kill a person, the camera stops and then restarts, so they put a fake person there. How clever they were for way back then
people, this isn't an actual video of the event. Thomas Edison made this, it was the first video he ever made. Look it up on IMDB. What I don't understand it, did they actually just kill that person for this short little video? They must have becuase it's not liek they had special effect lmao
Of course they had special effects. Ever heard of the whistle shot or the stop frame shot? This is what you're seeing. Essentially filming one action, stopping the camera, replacing what you want to trick the audience with and then film.
Filmmakers have been using in-camera special effects ever since the late 1800s. Go watch A Trip to the Moon on YouTube. It's made around the same time as this film. If you think they really made martians disappear with an umbrella, then we need to talk.

It has been suggested that it took three strikes to decapitate Mary instead of two. If so, then Mary would have been executed with the same number of axe strikes as Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex. It has been postulated that said number was part of a ritual devised to protract the suffering of the victim
yup i agree that Mary, Queen of Scots was executed in the late 1500s. Btw to execute her head, it tooked 3 BLOWS!! not 1 and a little bit help from the SAW.
People, read your film history. This was a movie made in the 1800s about an event that took place in the 1500s. How hard is it for some of you to grasp that? Look it up on imdb.
umm. guys this is one of the first special movie effect shot which was made by Thomas Edison Production in 1895. That is why it says Edison labatory 1895.
i don't understand. This is very obviously not real and it seems like anyone that comments on it gets their information from google searches. Anishinaabe maybe one of these but they are correct. In any other case you are a pox on the history of humanity. google that.
This was the sad end of Mary Queen of Scots. However, you need not look half-millennia to recall barbarism in our history. It exists and has evolved into "accepted" forms of murderous debauchery.
Mary, Queen of Scots, was killed only after being axed three times. The first blow hit either the back of her head or shoulder. At that point witnesses recount her saying to her executors, "Sweet Jesus." The executor then administered another blow, and a final third to cut the sinews from her head to her spine. Her head was thereby lifted and fell, as she was wearing a wig.
C'mon people. Obviously, it's fake, but it was made freaking 112 years ago. That's a long time, and I'm sure if you lived back then, you'd be outraged that they filmed someone's actual execution.

People, read your film history. This was a movie made in the 1800s about an event that took place in the 1500s. How hard is it for some of you to grasp that? Look it up on imdb.

Queen Mary was Annointed Queen by God. They should not of killed her.

well if that is what you believe then that's ok...but there are others that don't really think so...
littlesushii 4 years ago
Let them think what they,I don't care.I'm just saying this through common sense.
I like Queen Elizabeth, she is my favourite.
All I'm saying is,Queen Mary was also annointed Queen by God,just like Queen Elizabeth is annointed Queen.
It is a massive sin to kill a Queen who is Annointed by God.
Im not into history, but I have common sense.

Film worked pretty good for not being invented yet in this film?

i don't understand.

It exists and has evolved into "accepted" forms of murderous debauchery.
mayank444 4 years ago
Mary, Queen of Scots, was killed only after being axed three times. The first blow hit either the back of her head or shoulder. At that point witnesses recount her saying to her executors, "Sweet Jesus." The executor then administered another blow, and a final third to cut the sinews from her head to her spine. Her head was thereby lifted and fell, as she was wearing a wig.

Even if that movie is fack , That's what's really happend to the Queens Marry .

C'mon people. Obviously, it's fake, but it was made freaking 112 years ago. That's a long time, and I'm sure if you lived back then, you'd be outraged that they filmed someone's actual execution.

Mary Queen of Scots was executed in 1587 not 1859, and it took at least two (some believe three) strikes to decapitate her. This is 100% fake.
