Rest assured it's Ira Kaplan of YLT who's out of tune, not Alex Chilton. Despite Yo La Tengo having a couple of good albums back in the 90's, they've fallen into a pretentious, arrogant mindset where they think they're somehow "above" the audience, they're "indie", they're "like the velvet underground", and they've never out-grown that velvet worship. The musicianship has always been very weak. They're one of those bands that didn't realize the Velvets could REALLY play, and it wasn't an act.
Here's two great tastes that taste great together. I dig the Velvets, I dig Big Star, and I dig Yo La Tengo. No one plays out-of-phase Strat like W. Alex, and he rarely does it anymore. thanks for posting this clip.
I don't think Wayzataboy realises this is originally a Velvet Underground song, one of the most influential bands ever. I'm sure a lot of his favourite bands have stemmed from their influence.

I'm surprised you say that. Yo La Tengo, from my experience, seem very humble and unconcerned with appearing cool on stage.

Alex is back... at least for a few months. Seems like he works only 5 or six months each year.
