  • I get the feeling you were influenced heavily by Bob Ross? Which is just fine with me.

  • Nice keep up the vids.

  • Right?

  • great job

  • What he said around 7:17 made me cry. The one about not having to mind about making mistakes and just drawing your heart out like WHOO! for the fun of it. I do that when i'm drawing (especially when i'm using a nice pencil haha), and I'm glad I now know that that's what we're supposed to do after all: that drawing's more of fun than perfection. heee:D This guy's a fun teacher.

  • very nice vids. website appears to be down though. shame

  • Thanks! Really enjoyed it, haven't drawn much lately. Artists block or something. This should get me back. :)

  • Wow learned a lot in just 30 minutes. I've drawn ever since I was a kid, but I've learned a lot to improve my current drawings. Thank you.

  • i've never thought about sketches like that, just jutting down whatever you feel like without your brain telling you what to do as fast as you can. i've never really done sketches i've always just started out with the finished product and i slave over the errors i make and you know what, the finished product usually sucks. i think i need to start sketching and just lighten the fuck up about errors because i practically punch myself in the face over them. i couldn't have learned this in art class

  • helped me alot, thanks!

  • xD man did anybody said that your examples are good? xD..

thank you for doing this! :3

  • thank you vary very much..you are a great teacher.....

  • You are one of the greatest teachers I have ever seen!!!!

  • love the noise of the pencil sketching on the paper

  • So...sketching is like being drunk? LOL

  • Is it just me, or does anyone else find it comforting, or somewhat hypnotizing to watch other people draw.

  • pff would be better if after sketching for half an hour i would actually like at least a part of what i've done:( ...

  • Whenever I start sketching, it always turn out to be something and then I have to start taking it seriously again.

  • you are great!

  • BoB Ross of portraits.

  • Awsome vid man thanx alot for the advice

  • i'm sorry man but i feel like i love you. am i gay?

  • Great advice. Usually if I look at something I can draw it but the thing that always gets me hung up is the shading so maybe this will help thanks dude.

  • I liked the advice you were giving towards the end of your video.

  • you the man

  • wow..your feeling of art is so sweet .. thats what i call it artest look" u see the life on a beaitifull way ..

good luck and u r my teacher numper one ..

    thank u ..

  • Doodler! My new favourite word! xD

  • your videos are wonderful - easy to follow - informative - thank you -

I have learned more from you in the short period of time and am looking

forward to watching more of you videos Thank you !!!

  • thank you

  • is there such thing as a "bad" sketch?in our sketch book our teacher was always like make it nice, and she told me my sketch was to rough...lmao...arent they kinda supposed to be rough?

  • Thanks for the great videos, they are helping make better sketches for my watercolors I do.

  • Contour hatching and stippling are my favorite shading methods when I use ink. It makes it easier for me to control the shading.

  • Is this the last episode? :(

  • i just drew a great eye while watching you do it, thank you so much,

    lynda.

  • You were right in saying that you 'learn to trust yourself'. Usually when I sketch or draw anything I end up destroying it because I think I've done it wrong, I'm never happy with anything. But these videos are actually teaching me to relax and realise that what I do is actually quite good - thank you

  • thanks for these vids

  • You would be a great art teacher. I wish I had the honor of working with you. I have always separated my doodles from my sketching and now you have shown me they should be one and the same. I will take your advice. The thing you said about doodling while on the phone, I do that ALL the time :) thank you very much.

  • cool you speak as my teacher does :D but she is painting bit differently :)

  • Such strategy and tactics. I like it.

  • It takes a lot of time to achieve a certain level of greatness in arts. I have practised for about 4 years now and I am just recently starting to see something that would call progress, like proper progress. Of course it depends on your talents. I'm more of a person who just likes doing art rather than being talented in it

  • same here ..i noticed that i started seing the different tones in objects i got so excited.... because i can only draw the outline of only cartoon pictures...not real objects...maybe because the tones are what make up the object in the firstplace....if so then i'm making some progress :D

  • I drew a sea turtle :D yay for sketching...

hmm just took your advice... didn't completely understand the transfer thing.. anyway on to the next episode

  • you should post it :D

  • i can never learn drawing like u (((((( no matter how much i try... i'm failure (((((((((((((( i don't know why but i suck in proportions ((((

and my hand just doesn't want to take it easy and smooth. shit!

  • not with an attitude like that. be confident :D

  • Good Drawing is Good SEEING. The most important step in a drawing is the 30 seconds or so before you make a mark on the paper. Your eye is the boss....your hand works for it. Try this and see if it doesn't help:

Stare at what you want to represent on paper and get a feel for the directions of the key lines and biggest parts of the form(s).

The first lines you make should be super-light and short. Map it out a bit.

Talk to yourself and coach gently, like you would to a little kid. Don't quit!

  • warm uo before you draw. you better study form and perspective.

  • From what I see I'm abot to say the same thing that all ppl here. Just thank you for your vidios man :)

  • You are AWESOME!!! You have helped my SO much!!! I am taking art lessons on youtube and you are the star of the show. Thank you so much. God Bless.

  • ur an amazing teacher

    :-)

  • O_O Oh my GAWD!!! I have always been considered something of an artist by my peers, but you've made question everything I thought I knew about ART!!!

    @#@!!! SENSEI TEACH ME!!!

  • man this guy is very very good im not one to be impressed so easy.i hope he has more videos then this im subbing my arts teachers didnt teach jack shit to tell you the truth we always watched other artist videos and then do some bull paper mache and just painted teachers should actually learn from people like this.one thing i learned about drawing is its like science you need to study its flows and life its not all about imagination maybe and your hand movments its a flow

  • awesome we have the exact samme pencil staedtler

  • u got some serious confucious stuff goin on there

  • if you were my teacher, i'd be something now

    tnx a lot man

  • i know man this guy is good my every arts teachers shit now days

  • Hehe, I spend all of my maths lessons doodling and sketching. ;D I still learn whatever the teachers saying though because I'm not fully concentrating on the doodle

  • a camera has no brain, thats y it's good .

  • Thats good! Very good! LOL! I now have a way to convey to people how i draw!

  • thanx dude! you'r an awesome teacher, keep up the good work !

  • Haha Zen and the art of sketching... almost. You've taught me more in the half hour I watched your videos than years in high school art. Not only do you cover the technical scientific side, but the mood and feel of art. You cover it all, bravo.

  • Draw is

    Circle, lines & dots

  • you scribble so fast!

  • I've learned all of this alone after many years, but I like to listen how you say the same I think. When I'm stressed or worried I start sketching whatever it comes to my mind. I prefer to sketch in pen, the imperfection but so fresh line is simply delicious and more apreciable with the ink.

  • like your drawing that are good

  • I love the when you talk about what you learn and how much you like to draw. you can just hear how much you love what you're doing.

  • aww.. I hope my teacher teaches like you do.. (T__T);;

  • Sooooo inspirational....do you teach professionally...if not you definately should...i'd love to take your classes

  • thank you thank you thank you so much for this series! it's very helpful!

  • i've been drawing for as long as i can remember, and i use a lot of shading for my drawings

i love pencil, but i like using the pen a bit more

it doesn't have any values, but i still love it, cross hatching is the best for pen

  • I agree

  • wauw!! really cool! I DID lurn something! I'm much better in drawing now, thank you very much sir!

  • very clear and helpful vid

  • THANK YOU SIR! YOU ARE BETTER AT EXPLAINING ART THEN ANY ART TEACHER I EVER HAD! YOU ARE AN INSPIRATION TO MANY PEOPLE OUT THERE! YOU HAD INSPIRED ME INTO GOING BACK TO REALISM! I APPRECIATE IT GREATLY! BY THE WAY, I UNDERSTAND EVERY DETAIL. 5/5 + Sub.

  • your H is broke on your keyboard :D

  • i ve only watched a few of ur videos and i must say tat you r a true art teacher. i used to thk tat i cant draw cuz i just lacked the art genes and all i can do is memorise maths formular and hopefullt do well in exams. now i ve learn tat it is the fear of makin mistakes tt holds me back from trying new stuff. now i can sort of recognise wat i ve been doin and wat i ve missed all this while.. i ll continue to learn from u n i hope 1 day i can draw like u! u r great!~

  • 0.50

  • no one seems to understand that way to sketch

  • great work again!

  • man thank you! i was a prety good artist but now im much better! like the sketching..ways to sharpen a pencil..how to hold a pencil! all of that! i can draw much better now!

  • i have never gone to an art school, i just download books and watch videos and i am imporving a lot thanks of things like this one... thanks a lot

  • the part with the sketching is a little bit hypnotic =)

  • your the best drawer i have ever seen in my life

  • damn nice vid...nice sketch

  • =]]

  • My art teacher in school follows this method: "Hey class, draw this sled." Then she sits at her computer for the entire hour. I'm in my third year of art and I've never had an art teacher actually teach any technique whatsoever. Thanks, these videos are great. Very helpful.

  • haha yeh my art teacher dose the same thing thi guy is good id kill to have this guy as my art teacher anyday ^^

  • this vid told me how to make a perfect outline of shapes. thnx keep up the good work

  • I already have about a years experience in art. So far i have learnt a lot, the videos teach you more every time. They are great its very nice of him.

  • EclecticAsylumArt,

Do most portrait-artists use that way of sharpening a pencil like that?

  • That sketch would woop my final drawings.

    :P

  • Wow. This video has told me a lot. its awesome.

  • wow :O so deep!

  • whn he says "there are no mistakes", itz true. i "accidently" draw the wrong ppl whn im sketching. but it looks perfectly like someone else

  • I don't want to go to art school since I don't wanna educate me in art, have it just as a hobby.

So since I don't go to art school, I never would have learned portrait drawing. Now you are learning me, all free.

    Dude, you are totally awesome:D

    Keep On Going! :D

  • learning me?

    isn't it teaching?

    lol

but seriously i just want to have it as a hobby and this is REALLY great help :D

  • Perhaps English isn't his first language...

  • true

  • Grab a pencil and start doing what he does then, you learn something =learning

  • people these days have no respect, have a lack of consideration or sense and just love to grumble.. O_O

  • great video

  • the eye was so simply made but so nicely done. at first the picture was looking bad, but once he started getting in those details it was beautiful. I need to start sketching agatn

  • Lovely lovely lovely!

Haha when he put down his pencil at the very end of the video, I actually jumped XD It surprised me

  • From now on, I will start sketching!

  • these videos are fantastic! they've really inspired me, i've already gone out and bought supplies hehe...

  • i sketch A LOT, my entire drawing book is practically sketches (with a few finals), but i also tend to hatch with my pencil, for some reason im more comfertable hatching rather than shading.

  • i always doodle in school in almost every lesson but i usually draw characters and facial features

  • wow..these vids are amazing

im into art myself, though ive never gotten the chance to go to an art school or program, and what you're teaching me just really points out a lot of things that ive done that with these techniques, i can make so much better. thank you sooooooososososo much. you're really inspirational ;)

i look forward to watching the rest of your vids

  • i've been taking drawing instruction for almost 3 years now, and i still learn new things from your videos all the time. thank you!

  • ahhh u caught me

    (i am watching this)

    i doodle alot

  • wow! these videos are great I'm taking a ride up to my local art store today for supplies.

  • thanks for these videos man, i'm learning because of you...

  • Ditto. I really like the angular approach from 4A. Very logical to me.

  • ditto ditto. =]

  • I would like to thank you very much for doing these videos. They really motivate me to keep going and accepting that sketching does look rough and kinda ugly but get better. I think I am to much of a perfectionist sometimes so one get stuck on meaningless stuff instead of doing the whole thing looser and better.

Again very many thank's, more of your kind is needed.

  • AHHH thanx 4 doing thoses videos...they really help me a lot!!!

  • You know how to turn theory into practice in a fun and effective way. Brilliant! Thank You!

  • BITCHIN your a smart dude

    really smart

  • Wow, dude...Thank you so much for making this. It has helped me sketch freely, without too much concern for perfection.

  • you are brilliant.

  • i love doing cross hatching they are best shading techs for me

  • u r inspiring me more and more to not give up on something and to trust myself on anything

  • You are really a great teacher!

  • that's a big eyeball!

  • you are amazing!!!

  • I have always drawn like that. I always called it scratching, where you just do a bunch of small, somewhat messy strokes that slowly build up to the picture. It always worked best for me in getting something down, but everyone, including one of my former art teachers, said I shouldn't do that.

Haha, they were the ones who were wrong.

  • Is that what sketching is? i don't know it was simple. i thought it was going out and draw something as finely as you could. It was the exact opposite. I also draw my "sketches" using small meticulous strokes. Yours, you do it broadly and freely. I'm going to do that next time when I sketch. It looks more fun... You are having fun.

  • u r a great artist.

  • You are so cool ^_^

  • dah holding pencil that way is relly hard for me cant control my hand

  • this guy is actually doing this for free. its very nice of him^_^

  • you're so great, and generous.

    ^^

  • this episode was so helpful. my uncle Bob is an artist and he always tells me to sketch all the time an i finally see the point of it.

  • I like the drawing paper you use in each episode, also you are awesome!!! I didn't know sketching was that simple...

  • ya know the wavy line technique that was related to hatching and cross hatching? what was the name? i didn't catch the name. im taking notes, see, and i wanna write down the names. im leaving this spot blank until someone replies. plz hurry, my notes are not complete yet!!!

  • Contour (cross) hatching?

  • contour? not counter? oooh....thx a ton :)

  • looks like a 2B/4B

  • thanks for the info, like seriously, it's a big help!

  • What type of background / paper does he use? seems more rough then usualy paper.

  • It's drawing paper. Couldn't tell you the exact brand..probably Canson or Strathmore whatever sketch book was laying around. Most drawing and sketching papers have a texture and usually the texture is different on both sides of the paper.

  • You rock at this! Keep the videos coming!

what pencil did he use in this picture though, was it a 4B like before when he drew those hatches or is he using a 2B, HB...?

  • Your the best!!!!!!!

  • Fantastic!

  • There's only one problem with getting out the money.... I'm broke, lol! You're a really good teacher, though seriously. You've made me see things in art, that I have never thought of before...

  • what ever this guy told me was what my art teacher tells me lol

  • I always hated to draw because I wasn't good at all. I was just trying to draw a line and make it perfectly so I was always drawing it and erasing it over and over again. Now that I know sketching, I really enjoy drawing. Thanks alot. :)

  • Thank you for this, I've been having a hard time getting back to basics lately, alot of final drawings and whatnot, and I forgot what it ment to just let yourself go on paper Xb nice sketch!

  • Dude, I like how you talks like a philosopher who have it all down. You inspired me to have fun man!!! TYVM!!!

  • what kind of pencil is that?

  • wow, that's a beautiful sketch!

  • Helpful :D

  • WOW UR AWESOME!!! I <3 U!!!!

  • More!!!

  • When will the next episode come on? I need too learn the art of art =D you are a great teacher

  • Your teaching abilities are great. Keep it going. I'm looking forward to see next parts of your course.

  • thanks brother

  • I wish you were my teacher, so captivating! Your vioce is awesome and you skill is unmatched. Fantastic

  • wow, this is soo cool!!!!!

  • thanks for posting this...it really helps

  • You are a great teacher. You should teach an art class. The way you speak makes people want to listen to you and keep going. It's hard to give up with you teaching it.

  • I like the pencils you use. Seem to be working quite well. I usually buy an artist kit with all pencils and holders

  • Dude, that gettin Bob Rossish. Which is a good thing!

  • SavedTru8 how is this Bob Rossish? XD

seriously, love that guy but he was a hippy lol

  • POST THE OTHER ONE ALREADY

  • thanks for the lessons!!prof
