I love this song! It makes me think of Ken Koenig's song "Golden Girl" that he wrote for daughters its soo beautiful. If you haven't heard it check it out. Let me know what you think of it if you do! :)
Simple, straightforward, touching and moving...an underrated gem from Sir Paul...going to see him at Wrigley Field in Chicago, at long last they'll have a REAL winner on the field in Cubbyland ....:-)
@ITILII My sister got to see the Beatles at Comiski back in 66 I think it was and now she does even care. I was to young and have yet to see McCartney anywhere but the tube.
I have this album...in vinyl ..a special edition that has Paul's artwork w/an enclosed lithograph of the cover art on the actual album..However...I keep it inside the album as it came....Because somehow while I was at Anaheim stadium? In 2002? I played Frisbee with Paul? And he signed this album!...The people behind me were like "I can;t believe I just saw that happen! It was the coolest ever moment!! That's why we call him Sir! :) Thanks for the upload of this way special song! HUGS N ALOHAS
@MertonHayford simple, meaningful, beautiful....Paul at his best....I think this song is very unknown and underrated. Paul is without question one of the greatest songwriters ever. along with John Lennon, Paul Simon, Bob Dylan and Hank Williams Sr.
I have loved the Beatles and Paul for years... the reason why I'm a musician now.
With my son who's 5 (who also loves the Beatles) and listening to these words, it makes me cry. Probably a little because I love Paul, but mostly because I feel every word of this song!
I woke up in the middle of the night once to the sound of guitars in my kitchen, I was probably about 10 (15 years ago). My father and his best friend were playing. They are both incredibly gifted guitar players. They played this song for me once, and I've remembered the tune, and a good portion of the words all these years from hearing it that one time. Last night I googled the lyrics and found this, posted it to my dad's wall on facebook right away. I'd love to hear it played by him again.
This song of course was inspired by Pauls dad Jim. Jim & Mary must've been wonderful parents, the way their sons turned out: succesful AND nice. In their teen years after their mum died, Jim also actively supported both Mike to pursue photography & Paul in his music.
I had a chance to visit Pauls childhood home last year and inside, above the front door there's a plaque saying "For Mum and Dad - Jim and Mary". It was put up by Paul and Mike in honour of their parents, which I thought was lovely.
Lennon got a lot of deserved attention in his last years about his new-found appreciation of fatherhood with Sean. Paul desersves a lot of respect and credti for this similar reflection on the affection between father and son. Beautifully written and recorded!
@AyashaYumi It's ironic that John wrote and sang such a powerful song like "Mother" about his relationships with his parents and was essentially not ever there for Julian himself.
this song came out soon after learning my son had cerebral palsy and cried the first time i heard it. It has weighed a ton but 25 years later were still together
HIJO MIO TE DEDICO ESTA CANCION, SABIENDO QUE ESTES DONDE ESTES TU PADRE AHI ESTARA, Y CUANDO ALGUN PROBLEMA TE DETENGA SOLO PUT IT THERE, SALUDOS AL MUNDO DESDE MEXICO
@chainsmokingvampire real love was pretty good, and G Harrison has some great quality songs on Brainwashed, plus Flaming Pie (1998) has some great songs from macca, just saying
my father KEITH JONES is the person i can put it there to and i love him so much, every time i hear this tune i cry. Theres not many people you can put it there too. MY DAD IS THE BEST AND SHOWED ME THE WAY OF BEATLES. LONG LIVE KEITH JONES.
I remember reading the story of how this song came about. It may be in the sleeve notes to the album (Flowers In The Dirt). 'Put it there if it weighs a ton' was just a silly something that his dad used to say to him as a boy. What I like about this song is that decades later a memory like that can pop into a songwriters head and lead to something so beautiful.
Paul probably farts melodically, but it's his way with words that is so impressive. He's a poet.
Thanks gferdinandus6 for sharing this outstanding video. I cry every time I see it. For some reason it reminds me of my father who died Dec 8, 1991. I believe he had a relationship with his father like the ones depicted here. My paternal grandfather died before I was born.
I'd say there are many dimensions to Paul's genius, but his true gift is his sense of melody... however simple or complex the arrangement, the melody is always perfectly melded with the lyric, and sings naturally - no forced syllables... I think most of his tunes would stand just being sung solo, no instruments... all the rest is icing... the core of a song - lyric and melody - is McCartney's greatest ability... and he stands head and shoulders above anyone else in his generation in that regard.
I just wanna say one thing. Yes, this song is pure beauty. simple? maybe... but, ppl who say that is just how mccartney makes his music is half wrong. He can create something simple and amazing as he usually does, BUT that is NOT his genius. His genius is throwing together something like Helter Skelter or back i the ussr, VERY complex songs... maybe the most of all time, and he could do every instrumental and vocal part of each if he really had to. that is mac's skill...
also songs like back in the ussr or helter skelter, though more complex than this one they are also more comercial and to be genius is to create something unique, not matter if it is simple or complex
I agree, I'm trying to play some of his songs on the piano and I must admit that some songs, which sound quite simple are a lot harder to do when you try to follow the sheet!
Ive never had this with a song before, but this song did made me cry a bit, it reminds me of my dad and my grandpa, i have a really strong connection with both of them, thanks Paul, for making this beautiful song..

I cry EVERY time I hear this song... It's always made me think of my dad... Now that I'm a father myself, it makes me think of my sons, Kaden and Caleb...
