  • Boy, "Scientists" are really dumbing down! Purring is not a cry for food; I owned cats for years now and they yelp and hollar when they want food. It cries like a baby if it is in distress or not getting its needs met. Sad they are wasting time and money on studies like these!

  • @OldskolFan Uh, maybe your cats. My mom's 10 yo manx cries at higher intervals when they're hungry. Needs not being met? You must be a really crappy owner if your cats are crying out in pain lol. You shouldn't worry if your cat doesn't eat unless it nears 3 wks. They're animals; they're a lot more resilient than people often credit them for being.

  • @P5ychoRaz Oh sorry, I didn't realize that you were a preteen girl from the west coast. That explains a LOT!

  • @P5ychoRaz I guess no cat is the same. My cat is pampered and spoiled; she is treated like a princess. She just yells at me when it is her meal time: no neglect--she does it in the morning--just like a lot of cats. Check out the Youtube vids, most of the cats (especially kittens) yelp and hollar when it is their meal time. My cat was a shelter cat so maybe it is just a learned behavior for her. Some cats just communicate that way, others may pur. Some knock you on the head to wake u up for food!

  • @OldskolFan Or sit on your face :)

  • this is the third video Ive seen and the third comment with the highest rating GET RID OF THE NARRATOR ALL I HEAR IS WHITE NOISE

I want to watch these videos but I physically can't, please tell me shes gone by now?

  • @smeghead666 PEOPLE WHO AGREE WITH ME! :D

  • COOL!!

  • lol, what a misleading title. I thought it was going to be a cat that meowed almost like a baby cries... instead it's just this. Like the cat actually is trying to 'trick' anyone by purring at them. it just wants food.

  • I'm hungry...

  • What a nitwit caption: "hungry cats trick owners with baby cry mimicry".

Cats just ask for food: they want to be fed. No tricks, no mimicry. They have no idea what frequency the sounds they make are at. Sorry, learn to listen. No "ruse" here.

  • oh god she sounds HAWT

  • @AnimatorLinden shes o beese

  • It's entirely possible that making this frequency noise when attempting to provoke another to provide assistance (the cat isn't *attacking* or *hunting* for food... he's *asking* for it) common to *mammals*. Attaching the human metaconscious motive of "altrusim" to the provider doesn't erase the biological requirement for assistance on the part of a needy pack member. Nature doesn't leave important things to chance.

  • I think its inaccurate to say the cats are "mimicking baby's cries". The cat is purring at a pitch that is effective at getting humans to respond to it...this happens to be similar to a baby's cry because its what we respond to.

  • so they actually learn to speak human. just not gramatical language, but that's a whole different story.

  • damn all that from a cat video. . . let it go people . . . let it go

  • @swwigy I lolled but not cool man, not cool.

  • lol, obviously not good

  • LMFAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Lol... all the hate on this chick's voice is funny as fuck

  • I wont feed my cat ever again!

  • the lady narrating sounds like a retarded female version of christopher walken.

  • It's funny how Religion and Science. makes you crazy. "No it's all gods work.. amen" "PSH It's all Science nothing like faith."

  • @0Darktouch0 are you implying science IS like faith?

  • Have no idea O.o.. :s, Not quite sure what you mean :|

  • So you're saying that religion and science can't work together? Enlighten me.

  • Well thats just my opinion, sorta.

  • Science is the method of consistantly and accurately testing stamements. Religion is arbitrary statements, sometimes contradicting tests or being so vague that no test is applicable. They are inherently incompatible, in particular when it comes to giving consistant and accurate results.

So far, no branch of (real) science incorportes superstition, magic or religion in their work, mainly because they are all, scientifically speaking, not real.

  • @hornetpalooza

My professor is a christian and he teaches chemistry and astrophysics.

Tell me why they can't work together again?

A person can be both a scientist and religious, that's basically how most of our older scientists where.

  • Nowhere in my statement do I say that you cannot be a christian and do science.

I am however 100% sure that your professor do not apply christian dogma or any supernatural notions to his scientific work. If he does he should be stripped of his title as professor.

Just like Kenneth Miller (defender of evolution AND a christian) he will have to operate in two modes of thought.

The moment you add religion to your science it becomes pseudoscience.

  • @hornetpalooza

I don't see how you can add religion to science but okay... religion is about ones personal beliefs, no one is forcing you to believe the same thing. About 3/4 the students I know in the class are also religious.

To put it simple for you, religion is a way of life. Science is a way of understanding life itself.

  • Religion is making claims about the natural world, that is mixing religion into science. What's even worse is that when evidence does emerge, science disproves these claims, making the two clash even harder.

You're obviously making a huge effort to misunderstand everything I write even though I tried being as clear as possible. That makes this discussion boring as hell.

Science is a way of life too, but it is commonly known as rationality.

  • @hornetpalooza

Really? I'd like to hear these "claims".

Science emerged from religion just so you know. Galileo being one prime example.

  • Science did not emerge from religion just because Galileo happened to be religious. In fact, his science contradicted religion.

The clerics claimed the sun spun around the earth, Galileo proved them wrong and as a reward he was imprisoned in his own house for life and his work undisclosed.

The age of the earth is another claim religion makes that contradict scientific facts. So yeah, religion make these claims all the time.

I'm done educating you, try reading something other than the bible.

  • @hornetpalooza

Your claims are as stupid as your assumptions. I'm not religious, so why would I read the bible in the first place?

The church funded Galileo to prove their own claims, when the church found out that Galileos research was simply contradicting him, they stopped his funding and tried to stop him as well.

You can't go from cavement to scientist. There are steps the human being must take in order to achieve that goal.

  • @ObliviuxProductions What hornet was saying is that religion is in general simply an explanation, with no proof. Whereas science is an explanation, with full or nearly complete proof based on causality. They can coexist but they can not be applied to each other. You can't analyze religion rationally and you can't analyze science religiously. They contradict each other, they are opposites. Regardless of which spawned which religion is vague and abstract and science is concrete and explanatory.

  • @blobymcblobface

    Well, yeah.

Am I supposed to disagree? Lol

  • Exactly. Further more, who FUNDED the science is IRRELEVANT.

  • there is proof cats are assholes

  • Funny. I haven't been trained by cats but I have been trained by dogs... a pair of sneaky Border Coolies.

  • lol

  • Cats are manipulative little shits aren't they, they're evolutionarily tuned to turn humans into suckers.

  • SNEAKY MOTHERFUCKER.

  • she has the crappiest narrating voice

  • my cat has bin manipulating me this whole time ???!!!!??

  • wish someone would shoot the narrator...

  • =O

    awesome

  • Human beings are disease ridden and distusting animals. The world would be better off without us.

  • YOU DIRTY NIGGER!!!

  • what a load of crap

  • my hamster has 2 cages its a cage in a cage

its a small cage in a larger cage because it know a way to escape i tried it with 3 different types of cages

  • Wow, I never heard something like that, this must be the smartest hamster ever. Did you ever think about setting it free and giving it a job as your finantial advisor?

  • haha no lol i was about to put it on animals do the funniest things but i didnt

  • yo dawg, so you put a cage in its cage so it can be your pet while being your pet

  • no no my hamster always escapes its cage so i put another bigger cage around it so it cant escape DAWG

  • sup

  • What if you have a dog?

  • fuck this shit all my cats do is meow and bite my ankles when they wanna be fed. haha.

  • lol!

  • lol my cats if they want food they will go nuts sometimes they will meow like crazy or if its late at night it wil keep walking on you they want attention and yea

  • When my cat is hungry, it'll pester me or sit at its food bowl. It will never purr. It only purrs when it's getting attention.

  • LOL if cats can cry then my dog can meow

  • rofl

  • my cat is a con artist

  • My cat never purs for food. He goes in the kitchen and meows like a MF'er.

The only time my cat purs nowadays is when he's getting massaged.

When he was a baby though he purred pretty much every waking moment.

  • this is kinda stupid, we know that they per because they want food, we dont really care why they do that sound thpugh!

  • so my cat cries??? i've never heard my cat cry!

  • the narrator sounds like a dumbass

  • Some cats can tweet, when birds are up trees they try to trick them by tweeting.

  • so thats what my cats doing that trickster!!!!

  • funny => gave me my first smile of the day

  • " A new study has proven that the newscientistvideo channel on youtube is FUCKIN STUPID."

  • One of the cats that lives around my area can make a sound uncannily like a baby crying. It's creepy.

  • Well its only natural the house cats would deploy this treat

  • wtf this shit is horrible

  • It's impossible... He's so smart...

  • I'm not learning anything!

  • can we get a better fucking narrator, instead of a bitch who barely speaks english

  • We all think that but don't be a jerk about it.

Get your message out without saying she's a bitch please.

  • God that woman's voice is so monotone.

  • OR it could just be a coincidence!

  • the narrator has the most annpying voice, well not most but god damn it i cant stand it

  • DAMN!! your so right!! like the other hundreds of people who think the same thing, yet POINTLESSLY and CONSTANTLY keep saying it, so either stfu about it and watch the videos or just stop watching all together.

  • someone needs a huuuuuuuuuug

  • noooo someone need to shove a gun in the narrators mouth

  • i love cats

they are more clever than dogs

  • Evidence?

  • Wow I didn't know that purring didn't just mean "I'm happy"

  • some cats even purr when they're injured or even dying

  • How sad D:

  • yep :(

cats are so awesome they shouldn't have to die

  • Yeah i think it's a release of stress like how humans cry or laugh.

  • what? that does not add anything to my knowledge

  • yeah seriously. Newscientist is starting to fluff their channel a bit.

  • omg garfield was right! the purr IS hypnotical!

  • cute at 0:18

  • I knew they were up to something!

  • I really wish newscientist could vary narrator from time to time.

  • yeah, I know what you mean.

  • If you look at the end of the video you will see that the narrator is the same person who produces the videos. So varying narrators means you have to employ 100% more people. I'm more thankful that she puts these videos together than i am bugged at her voice...

  • Journalists often produce their own work,

Hiring someone else would increase personnel and costs, but it would also presumably increase output by the same amount.

I found Sandrine CeurStemont's voice distracting at first, perhaps she has improved her diction, or maybe I have picked up on the nuances of her speech, but I find it OK these days, Not annoying anyway, interesting at times though.

The presentation is always very clear, I am rarely, if ever left wondering about details in her videos.

  • Since higher output of youtube videos sadly does not equal higher revenue i don't understand what the point is. on the other hand, i don't really care anyway ; )

  • Great!

  • My room-mate had a cat that would scream "bonggggg!" when she was hungry or wanted the litter box cleaned. I've also heard my dog say "hamburger" countless times in the past 10 years..

  • i would ahve thought that meowing sounds more like a baby crying than puring, and they do that when they want food more than purring.

  • My cat has been tricking me?! That rotten little bi----wait... how is asking for food tricking me? It's more like... communication.

  • I love cats. They're so beautiful. And this video makes sense.

  • old news

  • My cat is smarter then this one... It will either Meow non stop or start ripping some carpet apart when it wants its food or me to open the door

  • I've had two cats, and I've NEVER heard them say any noise when they want to be fed.

  • naaww cute little kitty <3<3<3

  • Those cats will be the death of us

  • i don't think i would consider this "tricking" its more conveying a certain message

  • After all, its not like they are exactly mimiking a baby's crying.

  • agreed

  • I for one, welcome our new overlords!

  • Ah....I thought the cat was going to be all like,"Wah! Wah! Gimme some tender vittles!"

  • The cats.... Their getting more clever with each new era!!

  • cats are going to brainwash us all.

  • I love to rub cat food all over myself and then I let all the neighboorhood cats inside

  • Wow
