Tough song to cover, I commend you. Nice minimalist approach. I don't think anyone could top Ferry but I doubt that was the intent. It's a tribute to a great song by a great band. very cool.
This song is supposed to be sexy/sensual. Did you ever see RM perform it? This isn't the worst cover of "Mother of Pearl" I've ever seen, but, ultimately, the song isn't meant to be covered. The real attraction are Ferry, his lyrics and his voice. The tune itself is pretty damn boring without the aforementioned. Noticed how it doesn't even have much of a distict B section? Any writer could whip off the changes in 1/2 hour. But FEEL, of any kind, is something that few can ever achieve.
I'm a big Roxy Music fan and a bit of a purist, but this version is surprisingly great. LOVE what you did with the percussion - have you got a properly mastered track of this?
And I can't help thinking: I feel like this is exactly the kind of thing Bryan Ferry would have done with a song like this if he'd been covering it. If you know what I mean.
Anyone who would tackle something like this gets credit for making the effort AND exposing people to an excellent song.
You should hear the cover done by Johnette Napolitano, ex-Concrete Blonde lead singer? Recorded under the band name Pretty and Twisted, if I remember.
Oh how wonderful is this !!!!
