this was recorded during the new morning sessions along with other dylan outtakes that wouldnt see the light of day until the bootleg series but only a few songs were picked from these sessions this still remains unreleased until dylan and the esstate of george harrison says yes since george was apart of these sessions
Bob Dylan: "If you go into the Library of Congress, you can find a lot better than that. There are millions of songs like 'Michelle' and 'Yesterday' written in Tin Pan Alley" .... I guess Bob was going through his amphetamine-fueled mean-spirited ego-driven life chapter when he said this, clearly out of jealousy lol He's down to earth now
@MetrazolElectricity Jealousy? Dylan was miles ahead of the Beatles lyrically and creatively in the 60's. Its strange how after he said this John Lennon would go on to copy his lyrical style don't you think? I don't think he was disputing the fact that the Beatles could write amazing pop songs, just maybe that they were slightly overated at songwriters.
@MrDylanRecords Are nuts man? I'm a big dylan fan , I saw him live in august but contrary to your point I think dylan's an overrated songwriter. Like Dr.Johnson said, "I did not have time to write you a short letter" ...It's much harder to write something so transcendent in sound and language as In my life than a sort of frustrated release of emotions as in tangled up in blue. it's good but it lacks brevity. Besides dylan's tune are the simplest on the planet...think about the sounds in Pepper
@MetrazolElectricity Tangled Up in Blue is much much more than a "frustrated release of emotions" man. But if you want to go down the one dimensional route, The Beatles wrote loads of those. Take 'Yesterday'. Yes its a decent song with a catchy lyric but c'mon man its not exactly a 'Like a Rolling Stone'. Do yourself a favour and go back and listen to It's Alright Ma and tell me a Beatles song that even comes close lyrically? I love Sgt Pepper, but the only genius song is A Day In The Life.
@MrDylanRecords I love Tangled up,I feel it, but it is in the end a cathartic release of haphazard visions of cliched designs. Like a rolling is blazing but it's also thoroughly arrogant, negative and basically dylan acting like a prick on uppers. Alright ma has a few gems here and there but otherwise its again haphazard imagery and commonplace free-association gibberish with rhymes. Now Pepper's sound is so common but remember it was a quantum leap in creativity and musical engineering.
Stop acting like a fanboy. Nobody here's dissing the Beatles. Most people w/ any sense would agree that they're great. Dylan wasn't dissing McCartney. You should read what he's said about him over the years. But, Yesterday is Tin Pan Alley-ish, especially compared to the stuff Dylan was writing. And honestly, the 3 songs you mentioned are all monumental works of art. And if you think Tangled is 'cliched designs' what does that make Yesterday?
One more thing, Tangled up in Blue is basically a novel.Like a Rolling Stone is one the milestone of popular music/culture & one of the greatest songs of the 20th century. It's Alright Ma is simply stunning. All 3 are daring & groundbreaking. All 3 basically helped set the template for over 50 years of songwriting. Not bad for someone who was apparently just jealous of Paul.(And before you get pissy, Let It Be, Hey, Jude & Strawberry Fields Forever are also awesome songs).
Fuck does fanboy mean lol I'm unemotionally saying that dylan's not as good as the beatles, and isn't expected to be, he was just one guy not 4. Like a rolling stone is good, infact, I prefer it to strawberry. And no need to romanticize... tangled up tells a convoluted story of lost love but it's just a long song. One of my favorite dylan hits but still doesn't have the concise genius of yesterday.Afterall, yesterday was for the longest time the most covered song on earth. - look at this video
Uh, yeah he is. And any of the Beatles would tell you that. I'm not romanticizing anything.
If you can't see how Tangled is basically a novel in song form, that's not my problem. And guess what? Because of the ambiguity of the song it's not even certain it's about 1 relationship. It could be about 2 or 3 or 4.I think Paul wrote songs far superior to Yesterday, and I understand why Dylan said that it sounds like it was written in Tin Pan Alley. Btw, Lennon said the same.
@Rossonero072213 Dylan said this and a lot of other bullshit and he'll be the first to admit that he was a dick back in the day.Remember how he loses all sense of decency over that "glass on the street" and talks down to one of his own friends. He also didn't invite Baez on the stage in the UK,when Baez introduced america to Dylan. He was in a bad place back then and I wish you'd get out of your dylan-worship and just admit he was a douchebag for talking shit Paul.
Did I make any comments saying that Dylan was/is and angel? From what I know he's not a racist, a pedophile, or a murderer, which means that I could care less about any of that shit. I just like his music. From what's been written Paul & John were also dicks.
Why can't you get it through your skull that he wasn't dissing Paul? Have you read what John said about the song?
It sounds like the person who needs to stop their worship is you.
@Rossonero072213 Sorry, but I can't really seeing McCartney acting like a dick the way dylan used to. Typical douche comment about yesterday it was. When bobby saw that his records weren't selling outside leftist city youth circles he decided to be electric like the Beatles. Good for him. But still... good poet, mediocre song-writer... non-melodic voice. These things aren't the values you look for in a song's artist.Lastly, bob's song range is limited, pessimistic and melancholic
I see you've avoided my Lennon comment twice. He's said much much worse things.
I think George Harrison would disagree regarding Paul not being an asshole at times, too.
And seriously, read what Dylan has said about Macca over the years. And vice-versa. Nothing but respect for each other. Jesus. You are aware that before Dylan was a folkie, he was in a rock 'n' roll band, right? I don't doubt that the Beatles inspired him, but his influence on them was probably greater.
@Rossonero072213 I thought the Lennon comment was so obvious but lets clear away your confusion. In the early 70s, lennon and mccartney were involved in a very public feud and lennon was apt in that angry bitter phase of his life to say spiteful things about Paul.He would even belittle the beatles. But if you watch the anthology, george martin says "i remember john listening to yesterday and really liking it when the cello goes into that bluesy note, he loved it"
I'm glad you've dropped the 'I love Dylan' charade. Sounds like you're narrow-minded & not well acquainted w/ Dylan's music at all. You're last statements should stop anyone from taking your comments seriously. Like i said before, guys like you give the rest of us Beatles fans a bad rep.
I agree with you overall, except for the part about the Beatles being overrated as songwriters. They were tremendous songwriters. Dylan's probably the greatest songwriter of the last 50 years (in terms of quality, influence, inventing the whole singer-songwriter movement etc etc), but Lennon-McCartney have also got to be 2 of the greatest of the 20th century, too. Their melodies are awesome.
Anyway, Dylan and the Beatles both had a whole lot of respect for each other & I see them as the 2 giants of the 2nd half of the last century. They are both great.
@Rossonero072213 Oh don't get me wrong I love the Beatles! Its just I think Dylan was ahead of them. In terms of writing classic, spine tingling pop songs the Beatles win hands down, but I just feel Dylan has that ability to get inside your head. I also think he was very underrated as a singer. Just my opinion.
Lyrically, yes, Dylan was more groundbreaking, original, sophisticated etc. Musically, the Beatles were probably ahead though. Bob's written some awesome melodies, but I think he was always more focused on his writing. It was the opposite for the Beatles.
Agree 100%. Whether you like his voice or not he's one of the most influential vocalists of the last century. You can hear Dylan's influence on Lennon, who I think had one of the top 2 or 3 voices in rock, post-1964.
@Rossonero072213 Don't be a simpleton. Lennon-McCartney songwriting duo is known as the best in modern the music history with good reason. Dylan lyrics have a very poetic character but understand that you don't judge a song's lyrics the same way you judge a poem's verses. I don't think william wordsworth would make the best lyricist. There are different standards....Like Chomsky said to the reductionist buckley, "the world is a complex place"
@MetrazolElectricity Seems like you need to brush up on your music history. In terms of songwriting, Dylan's seen as modern music's (from 1960) most important/greatest/influential songwriter. Every single Beatle admitted the huge influence he had on them. And Lennon-McCartney are definitely 2 of the greatest songwriters ever. It's goes far beyond the poetics. The guy invented the singer-songwriter movement & changed what songs can be about. He set the template for everything that's followed.
I don't get your need do pretty much dismiss Dylan's importance/talent. (I know, i know--you just love Dylan but he isn't as good blah blah blah. please). This is why a lot of people can't stand Beatles's fans.
I don't remember what critic said that Dylan had one of the greatest voices in popular music and one of the harshest, but I think he nailed it. I've never understood people who say that he can't sing, who else could sing Like a Rolling Stone?
His voice adds layers of meaning to his awesome words.
Forgot to add this: When I said musically ahead I was talking about melodies/studio stuff. 'Cause Dylan's synthesis & ultimate rewriting of American roots music (blues, country, folk, gospel, etc) was almost as important as his songwriting.
@jakewino221 May 1, 1970 at CBS Recording Studio in New York City, New York. As the description says: Bob Dylan(Guitar, Vocals and Harmonica) George Harrison(Guitar and Backup Vocals) Charlie Daniels(Bass Guitar and Backup Vocals) Bob Johnston(Piano) Russ Kunkel(Drums). That was the band he used!
@AyingTorrs sorry mate didnt see the description, ive noticed that alot of importent events in dylans history happend around may, including his birthday, and big historic moments, hmm
He is pictured here holding a Bass but that doesn't mean he was playing the bass in THIS song. He might have played bass in a few of his songs but Charlie Daniels is credited for playing bass in this song.
I just watched a Doc. (Bob Dylan 1976 -1989) & one of the commentaters said Dylan was his favorite piano player. What can't this man play? OOPS! credits say Charlie daniels....Bass guitar. I still love BobS cover!
