How in God's name did she keep her voice so delicious for SO LONG?! Such commitment and abandonement...I'm just discovering her..so there were more singing actresses other Callas huh? Absolutely wonderful:)
Oh Leonie Leonie Rysanek why why did you have to leave us??? This video of Elektra is one of my most prized possessions ever. Varnay is also so amazing in it. Everything about it is divine.
I love this DVD and have watched it so many times I could not count them. This scene and the final one contain some of the most delicious music ever and Leonie Rysanek is incredible. Richard Strauss was a genius and Bohm's arrangement is truly wonderful.
Congratulations on uploading this, Onegin65, and spreading the word! :o)
Leonie Rysanek said "Yes, I could sing the role of Elektra. Once!" Well, she did, and we have it on film. She's amazing, Varnay's wonderful, the Fellini look of the movie is great. This thing is just a goddamn miracle.
Leonie was a miracle. I had the unbelievable luck of seeing her play chrysamthemus AND later, klytamnestra - this completes the three female leads wow
I have the disc of this recording, and to hear that top b-flat soar effortlessly over the orchestra on 'um dein Graaaaaaaaab" is breathtaking. One of the best top notes, like, ever.
I bought this video, it's utterly spellbindingly beautiful. The greatest opera ever written. Varnay is fantastic as Klytemnestra. DG £31. Worth every penny. I love it.
Stunning! One of the greatest films of an opera ever recorded! Rysanek is rivetting, completely at one with the role and the sure hand of Karl Bohm charges the whole scene with an electricity that would be hard to duplicate today. The fact that Bohm was very ill and died within weeks of completing the project make this a fitting Requiem for the ultimate Straussian. Thanks for posting!!
R. STRAUSS, the last big post-romantic genius !
