@SkateNater Really dumb comment. Did you know that a singer can chose to sing the A prime section anyway they wish? To my ear she perhaps missed one note, but what singer can sing this at this tempo like Horne. As far as "manufactured sound", I don't think "the greatest singer in the world" needs help or advice from a nobody like you.
I had the chance and I could say the honour to listen to Miss Horn live in Venice, Rome and Verona. She's not only a virtuosa, but also a great great woman.
@legolas66 Yes, indeed. I, too, have had the great privilege of attending two of Ms. Horne's recitals. Her presence is such that every eye and ear is on her the instant she walks on stage. Though rather short of stature, she easily fills any hall on the planet with her artistry. She is a true diva in the best sense of the word.

@Berokymilk Different times, different interpretations. If singers like Marilyn Horne had not been here in the 70's to unearth works like Vivaldi's Orlando and Haendel's Rinaldo, the baroque revival might not have taken place in the same way it did, because audiences would not have been interested in hearing them. Due respect indeed.
@Berokymilk With all due respect Ms. Horne is 57yrs old here and Mr. Jaroussky is still only 32! I have a recording of Horne singing this in 1977 and she blows Jaroussky out of the water in every way. He lacks the power and thrust to put this aria across effectively. Also, Horne has a greater facility for Italian as evidenced by her phrasing which is far superior to that of Jaroussky. I find his Italian mushy and often wonder if he understands the words he's singing.
i think she gets a little lost in the coloratura round 3:35-3:40 and lsoes a bit of accuracy... her stage presence is usally lacking i gues thats my only crtiicsm of a great like Horne
It was not her last performance by any means. Ms. Horne retired from the Operatic stage in 1996. She continued to sing classical recitals until 2000 and still sings occasionally in non classical recitals. She spends most of her time as Voice Chair at the Music Academy of the West, conducts many master classes, and is very active in the Marilyn Horne Foundation in preserving the art song recital. She's more than a beautiful voice, she's also a beautiful and brillant person.
None can sing this aria like Marilyn Horne!!! she start her carier like a lyric soprano and she became an amzing mezzo soprano even a contralto coloratura!!! very nice voice!!!Great Horne!!!
Brava! Sweet, sweet Jackie. This is one of the most exciting arias of the Baroque and Marilyn sure knows how to bring it up. The precise legato, one of her trademarks, rides majestically through one of the imaginative appoggiature in the da capo. Tutti a tempo. And with her famous two-octave leap to top it all off. Brava through and through.
un meraviglia... altro che le vocine smunte e prive di mordente delle "controtenoresse" ;) che in raltà vorrebbero tanto essere marlyn horne... Un mito vivente

I actually hear all the notes, unlike other mezzo-coloratura specialists of present.

With all due respect, but the performance of monsieur Jaroussky is far more better.

Yes, she's great. Try Mijanovic's rendition of "Sorge l'irato nembo". It's brilliant as well.

Not one of Marilyn's best attempts at this wonderous aria. She's really struggling towards the end, nearly running out of steam.

How sad this voice won't be heard on stage anymore. There's just one like her in a lifetime, it seems.

Correction: There's just one like her ever--an artist and person of highest rank.
