The leadoff batter reaching first greatly increases the chance that the team at bat will score. I have not denied that Clark should have caught the foul pop, Cards hit poorly, hurt themselves in many ways, etc. However, I have yet to hear a KC fan address the scenario if Orta is called out at first. Maybe KC wins, but it is much less likely. Momentum in sports is very real.
@hellojulie Denkinger's call gave KC a huge momentum boost. He didn't win the game for KC, but he was vital to the rally. That is why there should be an asterisk. Or perhaps Whitey should have done what KC did when they didn't like the call in the pine tar game, and gotten Uberoth (watching in the front row) to overrule the call. Notice how nobody talks about an asterisk for any other WS?

Cutejoshie makes the point that the call was made on the field, it can't be changed, and that's what it says in the record books, etc. Fine, but I find that curious coming from a KC fan, since two years before the Royals had LOST a game on the field after George Brett was called out for having too much pine tar on his bat.

If Brett had stepped out of the box while swinging, he also could have been called out. KC whined to the league, and got their way. By that logic, the Cardinals should have appealed to the comissioner to change the call, and replay the inning. 1 out, nobody on. How do you like your chances?

By the way, if it was my team that started a 9th inning rally on a bad call, I wouldn't be proud of it. KC fans have always had a very defensive attitude, because that would tarnish their image of the victory to admit they were given a break before they rallied.
When the Cards won in 06, they won 83 regular season games. That is ridiculous to me, and is a sign of the flaws inherent in Selig's mess. I would gladly trade that one for 85.

@ihtnep as an independent spectator not affiliated with either Missouri team, i can tell you that Orta, the man called safe next to Worrell in the picture, did not score. in fact he was thrown out at third. that was the only out recorded for awhile when the Royals did their scoring. plus hitting .200 in a series doesnt help your cause either as well as a wild pitch which DID result in a run scored. get over it, you lost

To all Cards fans, you lost the '85 series. Blame Dekenger all you want. I was at game 6. the cards hit less than .200 for the series. No team hit lower. In game 6 Gorge Orta, the man called safe at 1b, NEVER SCORED! That's right! He was forced out at 3rd and was the only out of the inning! Look it up! You are all so willing to forgive Jack Clark and Darryl Porter for dropping a harmless pop up in front of the Royals dugout, the wild pitch, the intentional walk, and an ooutfield playing

@hellojulie Being an independent spectator makes your opinion no more or less valid. Orta out at third is irrelevant. The leadoff batter reaching first greatly increases the chance that the team at bat will score. I have not denied that Clark should have caught the foul pop, Cards hit poorly, hurt themselves in many ways, etc. However, I have yet to hear a KC fan address the scenario if Orta is called out at first. Maybe KC wins, but it is much less likely. Momentum in sports is very real.

@hellojulie Denkinger's call gave KC a huge momentum boost. He didn't win the game for KC, but he was vital to the rally. That is why there should be an asterisk. Or perhaps Whitey should have done what KC did when they didn't like the call in the pine tar game, and gotten Uberoth (watching in the front row) to overrule the call. Notice how nobody talks about an asterisk for any other WS?
Also, KC fans get very defensive whenever the call is brought up. Too bad for them.

Denkinger's call did not win the game for KC. But if he gets the call right, the chances of a rally become very unlikely. This is why all replays in football are initiated from the booth in the final 2 minutes. I guess a team that gets a bad call in the final 2 minutes of a superbowl are sore losers if they want it reviewed, huh?
