here is a question to all Irish woldhound lovers. I was given an IW in adoption, as a pop. she is 1 year and a half, and she remained a medium size dog. lets say, she is 30% smaller than a german sheperd bitch. I have observed multiple videos and she has all the characteristics of a IW, only she is dwarf! is this possible?
hey people i used to have what i think was a irish wolfhound mixed with something but ive never been able to spot it can anyone help please pm me lol be she was a good dog i will send a pic thanks for your time
Sometimes you have simply got to introduce a new breed of dog such as a Deerhound and then carefully keep the more Wolfhound type dogs back and then start a new gene pool that way, if you dont act quickly then it could be to late after two or three generations no one will be able to tell if there as been any new blood lines introduced.
I Love These Big Dogs.. So Funny And Goofy ... So Big Dont Know Where To Put Theirselfs Lol. Good Video. But I Dont Exactly See How He Balances, But Good Jumping Act Lol. But Still A Cut Video;)
I think they outta throw more dogs into the gene pool. I'm afraid to get one jus because all the health problem and such a short lifespan. I'd hate to part w a dog at 6 or at 6 the dog be very crippled.
@19grand That maybe true but when parting w a dog at 6 yrs or having one that is very crippled it's not fair to the dog. They could work within the breed but they have to have healthy dogs to work w, that'll probably come from places outside the USA like Ireland.
@19grand Idk if there is a healthy stock in Ireland of IW or elsewhere but if the breed as a hole is unhealthy than new blood should be introduced to the breed to make it healthy. Like for ex their r sum breeds of horses that have weak hindquarter and so they mix Quarterbreed horses to build up the hindquarters.
@nikigurl08 my irish wolfhound is 7 and a half, if you look in the video I have posted of mine she runs around like a maniac and doesn't have any health problems (except she is allergic to a certain type of grass).
@Libbyjokelly Well you certainly are lucky! And its nice to know that not everyone loses their Irish Wolfhound at such a young age! It shows there's hope for the breed to be healthier, we just need to keep these breeds away from puppymills!!
I am on my third wolfhound and will never have anything else. The heart and love of these beasts keeps us ......although their lives are short, they could not be more full of life and love. Lovely film.......thank you
These are one of the most gentle and affectionate dogs I've ever seen. I would love to own one any day. By the sound of it you love your dogs very much. Don't worry yourself about what some of these people are saying.
I hope all breeders aim for better health, I know the one I got Aiax from does. But it takes time to get results since you can't exclude every dog with a problem from breeding, then the gene pool would be to small and we would have other problems. Instead we have to try and make the best combinations we can and slowly breed away from disease but keep a large variety in the genes of the breed.
@varghundpunktse the problem is no one wants to do it right if you make the right combinations it works and every one wants to make their own line and inbbreed

she id dum to do that with that dog if it fell of that log the wrong way there it a good chance it could break a groth plate it is coman in this breed when i bought mine i had to sign an agrement to not let it on the bed or any thing up off the ground
How nice of you to judge me without knowing me or my hound. I don't believe wolfhound are made of glass or that you should coddle them least they break. This video is of a one year old who is done growing, thus no growth areas to break . People who believe her/his hounds are so weak in bone and muscle that they can't handle a jump from half a meter maybe should be in a different breed, after all these are dogs that are originally breed to hunt wolves in heavy terrain.

Whats the point of wanting to even own these huge breeds when they die early on due to diseases, bone cancers, and arthritis just because of their disproportional body frame. You can literally take care of 2-4 dogs in substitute for a large dog because of the money, time, attention spent alone just for its health due to its irregular size. I dont question your love for animals. I'm just questioning whether you know your loving a "lie" from a real dog
It's not the quantity of time that matters to me, but the quality. The Irish Wolfhound has a way of being and a temperament that matches me perfectly, and besides you can never know for sure how long a dog will live or how many health problems it will have. I know people who have "healthier" breeds just to loose them at two years of age in an accident or some rare disease and so far (knock on wood) my Aiax has been very healthy. Our only visits to the vet are for his vaccinations.
People Can Have Whatever Type Of Dog Thy Want. And Some People Are Big Dog Kind Of People.. And Plus the Breed Is A Wonderful Breed. And It Isnt About How Long A Dog Lived Or The Money, When You Love A Dog You Treat Them Like Family And You Wouldnt Not Want Your Family Because They Have Health Issues. And You Have To Spend Time Money And Attention On Anydog To Make It A Balanced Dog. There Is Nothing Wrong With This Breed. They Have A Personality Like No Others.. Your Just Stupid..
I firmly believe that if I teach my dogs to have good balance, and make sure they get to exercise so their muscles are strong and fit, then they are much less likely to get injured by running or jumping.
Of course I'm talking of adults and near adults here, not puppies.
I let Aiax do this trick because he was (and is still) well balanced enough to do it, and we of course trained this on logs lying flat on the ground to begin with.
Any one can clearly see you love your dogs, so dont listen too what anyone is saying. You look like a great owner and clearly from what you're saying you are very experienced and I completly agree with what you wrote. I agree with you that they are not made of glass and any owner that is scared to let it have abit of adventure, does not deserve to have one! Who knows what thay guy is on about up there haha keep up the great work u obviously care alot for your animals.
I have two suggestions. If you're planning to get a Wolfhound:
1. Select a breeder that doesn't seem to want to sell you one--that's a breeder that cares more about the breed than money;
2. Learn all you can about the ailments that afflict Wolfhounds. Things like bloat can kill a Wolfhound in hours and unless you're tuned into these problems, you can miss it.
they are the Tallest, but not the largest nor strongest. Largest in sheer size weight and volume would go to the English Mastiff though it doesn't fall too far behind on the height either.
Irish Wolfhounds are the tallest AKC registered dog breed, not any where near the overall tallest, though. English Mastiffs are the heaviest and are about the same height as Great Danes, not too far from an Irish Wolfhound, your right!
Irish Wolfhounds are the tallest AKC registered dog breed, not any where near the overall tallest, though. English Mastiffs are the heaviest and are about the same height as Great Danes, not too far from an Irish Wolfhound in height.
250 lbs is exceptional for a hound. It's unusual to see them much past 200--and that's rare. They're running dogs, so they don't put on too much mass. A 250 lb Irish Wolfhound is most likely a dog that is overweight--with all the risk of some attendant health problems.
That's very impressive to see a young wolfhoung able to balance himself like that. It's refreshing to see a wolfhound that is still functional, not just a burly bear-dog for the ring.

well I guess you mutt hasen't got a wight of 65kg and a height of 85cm. Aiax is only 1 year old in this movie and for an IW to have that kind of balance at that age is not to common. But I guess it all comes down to point of view ;)

I think they should work within the breed to make healthier and longer living animals.
