he was a massive influence!!! That's a fact. See Ultravox ( original line-up!!) Depeche Mode at very least , were hugely influenced by them. i have an interview with them from about 84 where they state this! Thus he influenced Western Music.
@theonlyantony -you're a totat tool, probably explains your hash tag. Foxx and the original lineup of Ultravox were a huge influence on the post punk/romantic scene (while also being a major part of it). Midge Ure had NOTHING to do with the "new" Ultravox, in that it was a dfiferent band/sound -and quite likeable too. But from "Systems of Romance" onwards, you can't argue Foxx was some sort of nobody. Plus he pioneered a lot of electro/synth afterwards =long may he tour. I'd love to see him.
@theothermurdoch Agreed! 'Systems of Romance' is a gem ! No-one should overlook Jon Foxx's influence. While most other 'new wave ' bands wer still trying to be punk, his Ultraxox were already trying something new.. I love the atmosphere he creates.
I have not heard this song in almost 30 years, I still think it is brilliant, and from some of the comments still mis-understood. Midge Ure probably wished he wrote it , thanks for posting this clip. I also like the recent live version with Louis Gordon Johnfoxxmetamatic has posted .
hhmmm!,not realy into this one im afraid, loved burning car,20th century underpass etc, had more a dark apocolyptic feel to it :) this is quite lame in comparison
@theonlyantony John Foxx wasn't massive anywhere, at best it was cult scene, he had no hits per se nor was he popular in anyway. He barely gets a mention as a founder of Ultravox. Sads but true
Hmmm, obviously lots of younger people here who don' understand the history and interplay of the various artists involved. Why knock one good artist against another when there is so much other true dross out there. As an Ultravox! fan from '78, I may not have liked what it turned into, but I could at least respect it!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
This is very poor! It's really pants... underpants! And to think at the beginning of the 80's because of his very good song Underpass he was compared to Gary Numan! He really was just a one hit wonder... but one's better than none i guess...
Good to see Sunshine Patteson on piano and Eddie Maelov in the white suit on the far right playing keyboards. They did a fantstic album called Perfect Strangers. Anyone else remember their other band Gloria Mundi? Two albums I Individual and The Word is Out - wonderful.
In 1981, I saw Ultravox during their "Rage In Eden" tour, supported by "Eddie and Sunshine". I remember one excellent track of theirs in particular, entitled "Times Are Hard (So What Else is New). Perhaps John introduced them to Ultravox; happy days.
I have a couple of singles by Eddie and Sunshine 'Lines' and 'Times are hard' and l have been trying to upload these but being a bit of a thickwit l haven't managed it yet but cracking tunes all the same
Yeah... nice video, but!! guitar??? where??? hmmm... forget my last comment, i got carried away with nostalgia.... phhh :o( im sure these artistes alredy knew all this... great fun tho, those were the 80s :o) bring it back!!!!
Great song and album but where's the bass player? And what's John stupidly plunking on that guitar? And what's with the silly dancing keyboard players? :)
Ni5ei, one of the "silly dancing keyboard players" is playing the synth bassline. :) You can't hear it easily on this clip, but there is faint acoustic guitar, so that explains John's guitar.
I know he's pretending to play the bass line but...
Duncan Bridgeman was playing the bass guitar on this track, there is no real drummer and the rest of the instruments were all played by John himself. Since the bass line in this track is quite prominent I thought it to be a bit odd not to have a guy with a bass guitar on stage :)
That's a bass guitar on the record? That's impressive, because it sounds very synthy and mechanical. Reminds me a bit the closing segment of the album version of Karftwerk's "Autobahn", where they put an electric bass through effects to make it sound like the rest of the synths.
I've noticed that this is the original clip from TOTP. There exists another one, with the audio dubbed (so you can't hear the crowd in the background clapping).
A sedcuctive yet sinister piece of music - utterly wonderful.

Really, it's a bass guitar :)
John plays keyboards and guitar, if the bass line would've been done on keyboards he could've played it himself also.

@Ni5ei - Sorry, but that is definitely NOT a bass guitar you can hear. It'll be a bass synthesizer.
