  • Love this. Could you do lesson at a slightly slower tempo and explain the Mccoy method??

  • @homePicShow1 Thanks. Yes, I do have plans for that.

  • You play like a Master Jazz Artist. Art T. Cecil T. and many others thanks for sharing. Good Jazz is like sunshine on a summer day. Thanks.

  • Endless cycling on a musical bike.

  • @MrRelax3737 Thanks for your comment.

  • I love this but Im not sure why! Is there a Jazz musical theory book you would recommend?

  • @stevegsax None that I am aware of.

  • @stevegsax The Jazz Theory Book by Mark Levine

  • love listening to this. I love it but I'm familiar enough with music theory to know why. Is there a book you would recommend that would get me started?

  • Beautiful playing ........world class !! Thanks for your work.

  • @MrRelax3737 Thanks for your comment!

  • Great playing! I've been watchng a lot of ur vids esp. those tutorials. May i know what fingering do u use on playing Dm pentatonic ascending? Thanks

  • this is great lol i wish i could play piano. i only play sax and i just started dabbling with jazz...

  • Show!

I play the guitar, more wandrfoul harmoni quartal for jazz.

    My help, how to play..

  • Sounds great! Sounds like McCoy!!

  • I dnt understand What you mean by outlines. Also, When are we supposed to use rythmic and melodic sequencing?

  • hey i really wanna know how your doing those runs. when your playing really fast scales like at 1:30 in this vid. what are those and how do you do them?

  • They are not scales but rather outlines of the chord tones.

  • that's sick. that's just him 100%

  • Damn you're good! If I heard this on the radio I would swear it was McCoy Tyner. Not just the harmony and rhythm - but the excitement and intensity too.

  • Thnaks for the nice comment.

  • @Lot2learn your website link is not working...do you have a new adress? God bless you...you´re so good at the keys.

  • you are an awesome pianist, what can you point me to for learning the "super imposed" pentatonics on bass, sounds so insane!!!!

  • right hand lines are the syncopated BOMB!!!!

i know its signature of mccoys but could you point me to some specific albums, i've heard this kind of jabby chord change style on a love supreme, what else??

    cheers

  • Holy crap, are you Mccoy ? This is awesome.

  • one word: sexy

  • what is the scale you are using in the biginning of the video???

  • d minor pentatonic then to a c minor pentatonic

  • Cool stuff man. Just wondering whether you used a particular software for the bass and drums accompaniment?

  • can you send me the pandematonic patterns you trained?

  • haha wtf?

  • that's on the verge of just totally ridiculous!

  • niceeeeeeeeeeeee !

  • Great lessons very cool!

  • wow, you got the tyner thing down to a tee!

  • what tune is this? AWESOME playing man.

  • @potroastdrummer thanks. It's just a chord progression I cooked-up to practice some McCoy type stuff with.

  • how can u immitate tyners style that good? only by transcribing his impros?

  • Lots of listening. ;-)

  • Wow

  • Very inspirational as this style of playing is not really that common. It is a lot more common to find and hear piano based in harmony constructed in thirds. you really have to have a through understanding of modes, quartal harmony, pentatonics and altered or hybrid pentatonics. Plus knowing when to play and when not to play are essential in playing like this. I used to play a lot like this and didn't know what I was doing as I was playing by ear. I am bored with my concept. This conceptinspires

  • Your comment is appreciated, thanks.

  • To Flextones:

You into the LCC? You awfully sound like it.

  • Are you improvising here or is this a transcription?

  • Completely improvised.

  • I love your work man!!

  • I appreciate your comment.

  • It can be intimidating, but one thing that opens a door to this kind of playing is to begin constructing chords built with Fourths, instead of thirds. It's a big, abstract, commanding sound that's post modern.

Take a hospitable key like A minor. Build some triads with notes like: E - A - D and B - E - A. Lock the hand and move them up and down in half-steps and whole steps. Do the same in D minor. Plenty of white keys, in other words. Arpeggiate experiment w/ both hands. Try it ...and grow!

  • Excellent advice pyannaguy!

  • tremendous

  • Great playing in McCoy's style, but without mapping it out more slowly it's incomphrenensible for all but advanced players, to be honest.

It's just too fast to catch much of anything, with all due respect to your personal acomplishment .

  • Thanks. You might want to check out my McCoy Tyner Style Slow Blues Tutorial.

  • i wish i could play like mccoy. i envy you, sir. but at the same time, you've inspired me. im about to do some hardcore shedding.

  • always enjoy your playing. It's the real deal and the overhead camera shot is appreciated

  • Thanks for the comment Aaron.

  • Only thing this shows, is that you're a bad MuthaF$#@&%.

  • The only thing I learned is that I'll never play like this!

  • how the hell do u come up with something like that, awesome!

  • thanks.

  • Awesome.

  • What happened to McCoy's perfect fiths in the left hand!

  • Very good emulation. Thanks for also putting the chords or whatever you happen to be doing up too. I'm trying to learn to improv better, so this definitely helps.

  • very very nice piano !!

i like your phrase and chord voicing.

  • Thank you for the comment.

  • very prodigious technique...

but how the hell is this a lesson?

  • u r the monster keep it up

  • I appreciate the comment.

  • it actually scares me how good you are. keep it up!

  • Thanks for the comment.

  • I'd like to see you play Impressions or Afro blue, a pure modal tune

  • I have posted up a version of "So What", which uses the same changes as Impressions.

  • Man, the camera can barely keep up with your fingers haha....what kind of keyboard is that? nice playin' man...

  • Thanks.

    Roland FP-4

  • Bravo Lot2learn...Great Tutorial...Great Service & Exposure..Thank you!!!

  • I appreciate your comment.

  • you're a nice player .. i like it I play piano with a jazz quartet. you have that style but take care .. specially try to "swing" it .. not as a genre.. as a style anyway congratulation.. you're one of the most viewed jeje .. hope to see u soon.. unfortunatelly in my country(mexico)jazz is not as listened as .but we are trying to spread it n' we most achieve it.. one more time congratulations

  • Muchas gracias, amigo.

  • its good playing, but i've been playing jazz piano for over 20 years and cant really pick up what he does with the right hand so how can someone who has only started pick it up? the player should really slow it right down, explain concepts, how runs are made up, this video is really just watching a player play

  • You plaly really well, having absorbed the style, but without a defined set of left hand comp chords to share with us so we can copy & improv from, we're basically left out of the picture, just viewers of your playing...

  • You play kind of fourth chords, which chord notes do you play there?

  • I think this is very cool...hey the guy can play and has "done the homework."

  • Man, this is burnin'. Excellent job man.

  • Thanks, I appreciate the comment.

  • Very useful, thanks for this!

  • Thanks for the comment.

  • wow this is really impressive. it does sound a lot like tyner. of course no 2 musicians sound exactly the same, but you're still really good!

    keep up the good work!

  • wow, nice!! I admire anyone that tries to tackle McCoy and your sound is right on the money.

  • Thanks for the comment.

  • I find it more Bill Evans than McCoy Tyner. You have 2-3of McCoy's paterns and the quartals , but when you climax your reveal your point of view which is more Evans or Jarret, but surely not Coltrane or Tyner.I whould say you lack the magic modal tunes expect but i believe traditional jazz whould be your forte. Each one with his own.Sometime ill post a video so you see what i mean.

  • I agree. He doesnt have the modal magic but don't be too requiring because original Tyner is a genious, none can imitate him!

And yes it's more Jarret or Evans.

I whould like to see you perform Coltrane AccesRunnerSk1, i've heard very good words for you...

  • Nice name. ;-)

  • This is great and teaching me a lot. I wish someone would do this for every pianist!

  • were you just using D dorian for like the first minute?

  • Love it, great stuff!

  • Yeah! this is really refreshing to see someone post something who actually seems informed about the subject!

  • i'm lovin da musik!!!! i've been playin keyboard for a few years and i arrange a little. watching you really makes me crave the next level. does anyone have any ideas as far as how and what to practice...what are the great books and dvd's related to piano and keyboard....what are the great bands (any genre)...should i focus on becoming good at reading sheet music... anything that's going to help me grow musically ( even diffrent ideas from the questions that i posted) i'm open to.

  • don't waste your time with theorie books and stuff (as i did with the mark levine stuff). go to the best jazz pianist in your town and let him teach you!!!

  • what the! this is so super.... as in! VERY GOOD JOB! i've been playing for just 2 years with simple stuff then this came right across my face, this is the bomb... Nice work! hey

  • do you play professionally at all?

  • Excellent work Lot2Learn! Thanks for putting in the time and being willing to share what you've learned with the musician community. You've opened a door for many piano players to enjoy the "Real McCoy" on a new level. Viewing the annotations while watching and hearing you play is an excellent teaching method!

  • Thanks Chris.

    L2L

  • right around 1:09 you have a hot mccoy lick in the right hand. i play guitar, but i'm definitely copping some of your licks in here!

  • Roger you play magnificently and I really appreciate the notations I've learned quite a bit in the past week thanks for sharing and please keep posting. Beautiful music.

  • Thanks Philip. I plan to do another tune in this style soon.

  • Amazing!!!!! Like the real McCoy

  • Hey this is a awesome video. Thanks so much for uploading it. I love watching some classy stuff like this.

    I too love McCoy Tyner

Could you please do some more video's like this like Keith Jarrett etc explaining the modes used along with voicings as you did here.

  • Thanks Jeremy.

Yes, I do plan on doing another "McCoy Style" video.

  • Brilliant looking forward to it.

Ive subscribed to you too. ill know when it comes!

i love your explanation for 'so what' too. Keep them coming.

  • I watch this clip every week - it's unbelievable how well you channel Tyner's playing styel. I've only just begun to tap into it lately - by far my favorite playing style - so aggressive and passionate. You have to do more standards like this - with annotations or something!

  • Awesome job channeling McCoy! Thanks for posting this.

  • Thanks Kolef88.

    L2L

  • Great video!!!!

    Keep going,my friend!

  • any idea how he does giant steps?

  • You are probably my favorite person on youtube, great postings, thank you for all of the help.

  • Thank you, Jeff.

    L2L

  • Not McCoy, but your own style in the Tyner tradition.

  • McCoy? Bist du's? =)

  • holy jesus, this is amazing

  • Wow...your sound awesome in every way. Thanks so much for sharing with us your expertise.

    Regards,

    Huansabi

  • Excellent music !!!

    thank you

  • Incredible.. You're technique is just amazing. I'm still very young so I'm just getting into jazz and even though I don't play piano as my main instrument, this is some real inspiration!

  • thank you so much for sharing your knowledge it is sooo helpful and inspiring^^

  • Great playing. The format of displaying what you are doing while we watch your hands is very helpful in understanding this legendary piano playing style. Lots of inspiration here!

  • Yea! Money.

  • You have a great really fast line that occurs 2 or 3 times, sounds straight out of McCoy's vocab. What is that? Also are you thinking changes in the right hand impro?

    I've even more to learn.

  • Excelllllllllllllllent !!! Thanks a lot for this !

  • Great playing, and the comments are really helpful.

  • Thanks lantalooon.

    L2L

  • does anyone realise how good this guy is?

  • Wow, that was freaking ridiculous. How long have you been playing? I hope this is in my near future I've been playing for only a year.

  • Thanks so much for posting your own efforts in understanding the 'McCoy Tyner' style. This is a great inspiration for me to maintain my old desire to be able to convey a sense of the Tyner style on the guitar. Really nice and generous of you to provide access to this musical material of yours.

    Thanks! :)

  • same here

  • how can i learn to play like you master?

  • Dude...when was that picture taken? and where?

Do you hang with the MAN? Envious....

  • NightTown in Cleveland after his performance there a few years ago. I've met him a couple times and used to play in a trio with his bass player.

  • I'm here in NYC and he's going to be playing the Blue Note this week! Really excited to see/hear him! Been a fan since my first 'Trane record!

  • Разбиващо! Човеко, ти си невероятен!

  • Спасибо!

  • sounds awesome man...very helpful information in all these videos. this is Conrad Reeves, I sat in with you and Dave at the Chop House. I look forward to seeing you guys at a gig again, it was cool getting to play with you.

  • Nice, print out the sheet music of you playing so I can play it!

  • how can I learn to play this jazz style step by step?

  • 1. learn the chord tones

    2. press fingers on keys

  • ;-))

  • really good.verry good tension.but you know it.

  • '''LH fourth chords all over at 3:01 ..well this the essence of jazz and the secret is that You have to feel that '' all over ""

and that feel "all over " You either have or You don't.

I must say that You do have that great feel .. for space .harmony

rhythm and great RH lines in that "all over' To me that is the most

unique and admired part of improvising .Thank You

  • dude you've definitely checked out your right hand stuff. loving your sound

  • nice turn around licks!

  • Wow... thank you ! Really helpful for me, even as a guitarist, to see the voicings in the left hand.... I can't quite follow the right hand though ! 5 stars, Amazing.

  • I have also been fortunate enough to have met mccoy after a gig of his in melbourne. I was so adrenaline charged that my hands were like shacking. The guy is a god

  • Man, honestly i can say that if I just heard this without the image I would think it was THE real McCoy. That's amazing McCoy Tyner playing, keep it up!

  • Fantastic. I'm in awe, this is simply unbelievable.

What is the name of this tune/changes?

  • Always nice to hear you play man. Mccoy is one of my favorites.

  • This is a Phat Vid I love listening to MCCoy Tyner and watching somebody who can play it is good stuff because I learn from it. Can You post more MT up Please.

  • Great video.

  • this captures the essence of Tyner's style from the mid-80s on with the Sharpe/Scott trio. very eye-opening as i haven't gotten around to checking into that style. can you do something for andrew hill please?? lol.

  • Great playing!!! How did you ever learn to do that? Can you post a midifile of that so I can slow down and see the notes?

    Thanks

  • wow! awesome MT-style playing!

  • Wow this is HOT!!

Are your hands alright after this ^_^

    Awesome hot jazz

  • Im going to research McCoy Tyner after hearing you play like this. He must be some kind of awesome ^_^

  • Dude, that is very insightful. Thanks, I am working my way through a book of McCoy solo transcriptions, and this REALLY helps.

  • All I can say is amazing. I want to learn the "system" of music so I can advance. I really enjoy your playing and you are doing fantastic!

  • Thanks very much for the nice comment.

  • Hi Less2Learn: Wow! You have most definitely arrived. Your most impressive achievement I've heard yet. If you have time, take a look at Jim Martinez most recent videos. I felt some resemblance. This knocks me out. I'm not qualified to critique, but I'm certain Mr. Tyner would definitely give you an enthusiastic 5 Stars!

  • Hmmm, after all Avery's career move might not have been that smart ;)

  • Ha, ha! Very funny!! I do wish I could get together with him again but we are in different parts of the country.

  • Woot !! Definitely showing technical prowess here. My hands hurt just looking at it!

Swings pretty darn hard too. Love it.
