  • ok, sobbing like a baby!

  • I find Cathy's hope and optimism in this much sadder than her sadness in 'Still Hurting', because you've already seen the entire relationship break down.

  • @DontGoQuietly

    EXACTLY.

  • Possibly the saddest song in any musical.

  • That slight look they give each other at the end kills me every time...

  • also- the moment where he takes off his wedding ring literally breaks my heart.

  • i honestly find this song one of if not THE saddest song in the show- her hope placed against his defeat and sadness and the fact that we already know the outcome of something that she's so happy about...it's brilliant and so touching.

  • Butz' acting is subtle, delicate and touching. He sings effortlessly, and his character in this is extract in particular is as natural as they come.

  • Breath-taking.

  • For the most part I like her acting. But what is the "finally yes" bit about?!? haha

  • The show isn't supposed to be about wonderful exciting people. It is about two everyday people just living lives. Also, they are acting alone, mostly. There is truly only so much you can do.

  • @broadwaychick365 Just listen to it.

  • i really love thos musical, i think the concept and the songwriting are just so awesome! JRB kicks ass!

  • @maggs51492 My new life goal is to play Jamie. Let's do it.

  • the music to this makes me cry because its the same music for "The next ten minutes" (there wedding)

  • I'm sorry, i love this musical to death but i don't think their acting/stage pressence is very good. sorry.

  • god i love her voice. she is a goddess....her voice is perfection. it's amazing. OMG she is so great. and i love this song and her perfect phrasing and perfect pitch..love love love..

  • Am I the only person who hates the cast. Great music though.

  • @Hobbsdude i do agree with you...amazing music, and their voices are quite good (except for she has a bit of a nasally voice which causes her to go flat in spots), but i just dont like the acting of the cast...a little monotone/confused for my liking :P

  • If you want to see a brilliantly acted song watch Michael Arden's version of Run Away With Me, it's on you tube and it is pretty awesome!

  • MrHatz got completely disagree. If anything NLB overacts his face off to a cringe worthy level during Shiksa Goddess and Moving too fast. Good acting is about finding the truth in the moment. It's exactly that idea of hand gestures and facial ticks that gives musical theatre such a bad reputation. You shouldn't be controlling how you look to the audience, you should be so connected to the text/song that it happens automatically. Not the best acting in this show but for different reasons.

  • Personally, I get really excited to watch these videos and then notice how little that actors really... act. I mean, I feel like they focus more on conveying their emotions through their voice than they do their bodies, and they should do both. It's so weird to watch them and not see them move or make facial expressions the way I feel like I would if it were me up there.

  • Agreed. Completely.

  • It's interesting how you guys dislike the performance by the original cast, yet appreciate the musical. It goes to show how powerful the storyline and lyrics are. I saw a performance of this just last week at the Berkshire Theatre Festival with two seasoned musical actors playing the leads and I feel like they were better than these two in the video. But, I also noticed that this musical is pretty difficult to act out with the music. I can't wait till someone does this musical right on Broadway.

  • ATTENTION ALL BROADWAY ACTORS:

Every show you perform must be absolutely PHENOMENAL, for you never know when some clever fan will find a way to sneak in a camera, record the show, and put it on youtube for the world to see!!

    Thank you btw! lol.

  • i know this is the dumbest comment ever, but my history teacher seriously looks like a brunette Sherie Rene Scott.

  • Anyone who has ever suffered a devastating break up can identify with this song. It's so real, it hurts each time I hear it. So beautiful.

  • i agree. i saw this show two days after my boyfriend of 3 years broke up with me. i bawled like a baby. but this show is still phenomenal.

  • I love this show. My theatre company opens with the show tonight! :)

  • CAN I JOIN YOUR COMPANY??? i love this show...

  • I think my new life goal is to play Cathy in The Last Five Years haha!

  • One of mine is to play Jamie :)

  • Mine too!!!! I loooove this show!

  • I love Sherie Rene Scott! and i love Last Five Years!!!

  • She's my favorite. I got to meet her!

  • Jealous.

  • This is sooooo heartbreaking. That was my first time hearing the whole thing, and I am such a wreck.

  • i love this song and this musical and her voice but i want her to do so much more than stand there!!!

  • But that's what makes her performance so powerful. Jamie is the one moving, because he is leaving.

  • I just mean her arms and stuff, show more exicitement and giddiness that she has just had her first date and really loves this guy. It would make the audience feel so much more mixed emotion if she looked even MORE blissful. She could stay in one spot, but more something you know?

  • Ah, I see what you're saying. It doesn't bother me much, but I see where you are coming from. :)

  • :-)

  • I find that theater-goers are usually split on SRS. I think it has to do with her acting being a lot more subtle than most are used to. Which makes sense, because it's nearly a golden rule to be a little over the top in theater, in order to allow the actor to communicate themselves to the entire audience. But it seems that some people favor her acting style, that subtlety, which is also fine. So I suppose it just shows that different people are looking for different things when they see a show.

  • I really don't like Sherie Rene Scott as a person. She is a great singer and even better actress, but her personality and some of her ideas on life are weird!

  • What? Elaborate?

  • Some of the things she says in her interviews are kinda rude. In one of her interviews she said she hated chilren. She's just weird. She said that she payed 4 a husband and son. That seems weird to me.

  • Being childfree is not uncommon. I don't want children either. I wouldn't go so far to say I hate them, but it's her opinion.

I don't know the interview in question referring to paying for a husband and son, but that seems like a joke to me.

She's entitled to her opinions, but you're certainly entitled to think she's weird as well. She was lovely when I met her.

  • She is very nice I'll admit that. She just seems a bit weird to me.

  • Both of those were jokes. Sherie's got a VERY dry humor, so maybe you just didn't understand? n other interviews, she expresses a huge love for her husband and son.

  • exactly. she's got a terrific sense of dry humor. you just have to know when she's serious and when she's kidding.

    love her!

  • The most underrated song in the entire show!

  • i love this musical. Its just, awesome. Thank god for Jason Robert Brown.

    -a 13 year old girl

  • is this just a 2 person show?

  • yeah, pretty much.

  • Oh... Oh, that's so sad.

I am in love with this show- SO AMAZING!

  • I love this -- but what's up with Sherie's incredibly ugly top?

  • I KNOW RIGHT!?

    The whole damn show! hahaha

  • Norbert Leo Butz reminds me of Adam Pascal soooo much!!!! and Brooks from Songs for a New World.

  • i love that melody that keeps popping up throughout the musical. its the one when he sings "I could never rescue you, all you ever wanted..."

  • Me too, it was just stuck in my head!

When it starts playing during their kiss in "The Next Ten Minutes" it is such a sad reminder that their relationship is doomed in the middle of such a happy moment...for me, that little violin part is one of the most heart-wrenching parts of the whole musical (among many, of course).

  • JRB does that with quite a few motives in this show. For example the lyric that Jamie sings 'clip these wings' and Cathy sings 'cut through these strings and open my wings.' Jamie sings "i just keep rolling along' and Cathy sings 'start again this weekend and just keep rolling along.' There are other examples as well...pure songwriting genius!

  • Jaime has left Kathy for another woman (his publicist or secretary or something). He leaves her a note saying he's left her (which Kathy finds at the beginning of the musical in "Still Hurting")

Kathy is five years earlier in the beginning of the relationship saying good-bye to Jaime after their first date (compared to Jaime who is at the end of the relationship saying good-bye to Kathy forever)

  • The show is done where Kathy relives the relationship/marrige from end to beginning, and Jaime from beginning to end. the couple meet in the middle at their wedding vows ("The Next Ten Minutes")

  • wait so...what just happened? i'm lost

  • She's just said goodbye to him after their first date, and he is five years later than that, singing about leaving her for another woman.

  • wait so he's in another time? that's what the last five years means?

  • He tells their story from the beginning of their relationship forward, while she starts at the end and goes backwards. At the beginning of the show, he is getting ready for their first date, and she is suffering from the break up. The only time their paths cross is at the middle--during their wedding. You should look into getting the recording. It's a really beautiful show.

  • maybe i will. too bad it didn't make Broadway. Thanks for explaining! =D

  • It was too small a show to hit the mainstages and play for bigger houses than Off B'Way

  • that's sad...*sigh* =P

  • That and it's only a one-act, so it's not really a broadway-friendly format....sadly....

  • @carr0760 There have been many one-acts on broadway. For example: Xandu. A one-act can be on broadway.

  • "once on this island" is one act also

  • totally agree... I mean it could be on Broadway hypothetically especially now that its built up such a following but it would be extremely odd in my opinion

  • I actually read a quote from JRB somewhere where he said that his works would never be accepted on Broadway...that he simply doesn't conform to what a 'broadway musical' is. It's true....his work is amazing, but it's not typical theatre.

  • @carr0760 So then what were "Parade", "Urban Cowboy" and "13"? All three had short runs on Broadway, the first one won him a Tony and a Drama Desk, and the second got him another Tony nomination. And of course despite being Off-Broadway, he won two Drama Desks, nominated for a third, for this one. I think he's being accepted... :P

  • Yes =)

He sings from the beginning to the end, while she sings from the end to the beginning.

In the beginning of the show, Kathy sings about their breakup, and he sings the next song about their first date.

    Truly heartbreaking song right here.

  • i love this show... i love the songs... their voices are fantastic but (i don't want to be slammed here) they don't really seem to be acting... i saw a version of this in cape may and loved it and am so happy that i can watch it whenever now, but they both seem... bored

  • oh. my. God. I have been looking for a video for this for years. I've always wanted to see this part. you just made my entire day. :D

  • Thank you so much for uploading these! It's obviously greatly appreciated by people other than just me.. but I wanted to chime in! :)
