Yeah! I see what you mean about about the Scooby Doo cartoon.....They couldn't have Scooby Doo dancing to Country music now could they?? Black music was so exploited by white TV back then.
@Egondv maybe exploited is not quite the right word. Sorry ....I know that Chuck Rainey and Bernard Purdie did alot of that stuff like the Archies etc., and probably made great money doing it.
This track sounds ahead of its time.It sounds like the music from the end of the 60's going into the 70's instead of something from the middle of the decade
I totally agree, roebliss. At that time, this was the kickass jam in LA, part one and two. This was killer jam music and still is. Earl was a badass mother......
Just bought a copy of this 45 from my local 2nd hand store. Upon getting it home I'm disapointed to hear that it's different to the 'shadows of motown' version. Does anyone know if the documentary version is available on vinyl or cd?.
The live version on the "Standing In The Shadows of Motown" soundtrack is unbelievably better. Nice to hear the original version. Thank for posting. Please if you can, get the live version folks. The Funk Brothers were the most prolific session band in the history of MUSIC. This is indeed a proven fact as they have played on most number one hits then the Rolling Stones, the Beatles and Elvis COMBINED!!!
Yesterday, I actually got to see the Funk Brothers perform live in concert. Bob Babbitt and one of the original guitar players (don't remember his name) were there and the soul was there so I think it's fair that they be called the Funk Brothers.
MotownMaster you failed to mention guitarist Joe Messina in your 'fortified' personnel list of the Funk Brothers. He was at Motown longer than any of them. He's also an extraordinary musician on par with ANYONE. He's a beautiful man who I consider a friend. Don't forget Jack Brokenshaw's vibes. He was on more stuff than Jack Ashford...nothing against Jack. He's one bad dude.
I don't care about the speed of the damn turntable, the revs or the pitch. I only care that MotownMaster keeps posting great clips like these, that help educate me about the music I was weaned and raised on. To hell with this constant nitpicking. Just enjoy the music, you freakin idiots. MotownMaster, you have my love and respect.
Seriously! How about "Thank you for posting this," instead of complaining about the pitch of the record peoople! Anyway, its hard for me to believe it came out of Motowns main studio band; it sounds so different! It's a great song though! Back to the days of deep soul, back to the days before Philly Soul went increasingly orchestra....This stuff had the real groove!
@MotownMaster Thank you! This artist and this tune was and is, too important to be denigrated by such trivial complaints, especially when one considers the time period and the meager technology they had available.
@Steacy783 ?? Everything is there... even the, er, 'BASE' (why can't people spell anymore...?). And, if you look carefully at the clip you'll see that the music is coming from something called a 'record player' and the sound is coming out of a thing called a 'speaker' which is where the video camera's microphone is picking it up from. Were you expecting pristine, digital 21st century sound or something...?
@Steacy783 The instrument is a bass. When you make a word like "drums" plural, it doesn't require an apostrophe. But it is true that the speed isn't right. The song is flatter and slower than it is at proper playback. As @JMB30 mentioned, you can hear the correct speed in "Standing in the Shadows of Motown", starting around 02:30 in the movie.
also there is a part one and part two of this song. This is part one, and part two is more upbeat, like a reprise so maybe that has to do with some of the confusion
actully this is played at the right speed. (Thank you by the way Motown Master for posting this.) I was confused by the tempo and everything, but I saw the record before it was spinning, and it said 45rpm. So I counted the revolutions for one minute and it came out to be like 43 or something which could be because 1. I counted wrong 2. The table could be slightly off.
For god's sake get someone who knows what they're doing to come over to your place and straighten out the interface between your turntable and the computer; there's a little matter of the RIAA curve that you don't seem to be aware of; as well as gross dynamic distortion. This is very valuable and important musical history; but by time you get through with it it sounds like chimps banging on garbage cans; please get this fixed.
if you look on iTunes for the flick (pt. 1) it's slower, so what's the real speed? you can find it on iTunes by searching for the "complete motown singles" it's on vol. 5, there's also a flick (pt. 2) that may be what's causing confusion, anyway, I kind of prefer it at this tempo, then then slower version on iTunes,,either way man, what a track!
The Flick, is also available on the LP Earl Van Dyke - The Earl of Funk, it is the Funk Brothers playing live...includes mostly cover songs, real good stuff!!!
These guys are legendary - thanks for this - does anyone know if the movie of the Funk Brothers is available in the UK? I had hoped it would have cinema release but sadly it didn't here. Thanks and regards
Yea, this is the tune used during the credits of "Standing in the Shadows" movie...Awesome! These unheralded musicians finally get their due. Too late for some...Powerful story indeed...

I counted the revs on the single as posted; it's actually 47rpm. The key is supposed to be C natural, and the pitch is a little high.
