  • thank for this video....make me smile and i swear i partied with a few of those ppl....god bless the freaks,....

  • @gmoispoisen Thanks for the kind thoughts.

  • I've never removed a comment from any of my vids, and don't intend to now. Why the "Suck" guy has nothing better to do with his time than to slam Deadheads (yeah, sometimes we can be an easy enough target) is between him and his psychiatrist. Which is to say, it's probably best to ignore negative behavior. Cheers, and thanks to all for checking us out!

  • Don't Feed the Troll (ie. YallSuckTheBig1). Cool people get into flame wars on youtube....

  • @rectalbomb Letz see, what's that dead head bumper sticker again ?? ...Hmmm - Oh yaeh, "Mean people suck !!" ...Thanks Mr.Rectalbomb !!

  • ROLL AWAY THE DEW is the cleaning out of the cobwebs with some good family L that you find in Visine bottles at shows...Four Winds = 400mcg Owsley

  • My visceral interpretation of that lyric has always made me think of the wind picking up and the "dew" rolling of the sails of the ship as, "the four winds blow you safely home". The great thing about some poetry is that it allows you to make up your own meaning, thus allowing the listener to kind of participate in the creative process for themself.

  • ....This video is great on so many levels. It exposes the dead fans for what they are. When asked about what Hunters lyrics mean to them, some attempt to make up answers on the spot but a majority clearly have no idea what they're saying. Dead fans are not music fans....they're "heard mentality" fans. They're there to score drugs & meet other dead fans & that's it. The Dead are just background tunes to the real headliner....DRUGS !!

  • @YallSuckTheBig1 Ahem . . . and now, back to our regularly scheduled program.

  • Comment removed

  • @ste4ve

    ....And your point is ??

  • @YallSuckTheBig1 nobody asked you and nobody cares bout haters.

  • @MrJoedonbaker1

....Well sir, maybe not you specific-ly, but the sponsors of this post DID !!

  • @YallSuckTheBig1 Amen!...couldnt have said it better myself. Never saw such a group of burnouts in my life...... not one of these nimwits had an intelligent response to lyrics that are 40 years old? Gimme a break!

  • @YallSuckTheBig1 All I can say is....For those that know, no answer is necessary.

For those that don't, no answer is possible.

  • @ammakjos

...Come on ammakjos !! Dead Heads have never risen to the level of the Holy Bible & it's crazy to think they do.

  • @YallSuckTheBig1

I saw the Dead from 1984-until the summer jerry passed away .

i dont/didnt do drugs and was 90% there for the music 10% for social . you are correct and i dont argue with your points. DRUGS were a huge factor with deadheads . i saw an escalation with drug usage with dead fans from 1990 onwards . the scene went through many changes from the 80's and 90's but the worst was from 1991 on , much more heavy drugs and it was almost one can say, JUST A PARTY. and the music was second

  • @chewnupandspitout

Thank you for your honesty chewnupandspitout. I'm from the SF Bay Area that spawned the Dead & old enough to know. I think I'm more than qualified to say what I'm posting here cause I predate almost everyone here (early 1970's) You are absolutely correct sir (though I've never been a fan of theirs, I did go to a handfull of their shows in my youth just see for myself & I wasn't missing anything) The 2nd & 3rd gen Dead fans are the worst.

  • @YallSuckTheBig1 you had me there for a second thanks for the trip =D

  • @YallSuckTheBig1 Oh what do they all mean then? What's their *real* meaning??

  • wait a minute......what was the question???

  • @papagrateful

...The question was "What are the lyrics to the dead tune -Hunter ?" But the all loving Dead fans took exception to my take on it/them & turned it into a hate-discussion about my opinion of the Dead & their cult followers.

  • looked directly into jerry's eyes as they were smiling back, the music shined an aura of love across the masses of sisters & brothers, sharing secure moments of peaceful elation, effortlessly allowing hearts to caress souls with kindness, living simply so others may simply live to be grateful.

  • @papagrateful

Sounds nice papagreatful....But your tone sounds eriely simular to a Jim Jones (another fine product of SF BTW) sermon circa 1975 & we know how badly that ended...don't we ?

  • I love the guy with dreads at 2:10

  • @invaderzim24

...I don't commit such things to memory...but I'll take another look if I make time for it. Is it significant ?

  • @YallSuckTheBig1 what the fuck are you talking about?

  • Morning Dew = a song about post apocalyptic miserable depressive state. "Roll away the dew" = shake the dust off and wake up from the negativity and misery of the post-war 50s... and be happy! thats what it always meant to me in my head.

  • @LoRentAssMan

....Wow, that's deep man !! You got all that from one Dead tune ?

  • @YallSuckTheBig1

well, I did some research on the origin/meaning of "[Walk me out in the] Morning Dew" a while back, and it turns out that the writer of the song meant it to be a post-apocalyptic take that had something to do w/ an old movie, the name is escaping me. I just made the inference, that "roll away the dew" was a reference to the morning dew that represents sorrow in the other song. Since Franklins tower is about positive vibes and dancing away the dew. idk. :)

  • What does "roll away the dew" mean to me? I answer that with another line from the song: "If you get confused, listen to the music play."

  • @witharose7

...Frankly, I don't think even the members of the Dead themselves can explaint it...can they even balance a checkbook ?

  • Ah man I was at this show. It was absolutely amazing. Great people all around me, a smile on every single person's face. Can't really say the same for the next Dead show I saw at the Izod center the following year -- weird vibes.

  • @TheBiscoDiscuits

I think I'll just leave you alone with your thoughts

  • Comment removed

  • And sometimes hunters lines are down right dark as it gets.

  • Roll away the dew... yeah, that's real hard to figure out. Hee, hee!

  • It's about the making of the Liberty Bell...according to some folks at the song meaning website. The dew was steam on the bell which was part of the manufacturing process.

  • @tbrown55 This liberty bell meme was first started on the annotated GD lyrics website, and is a clever satire on the meaning of roll away the dew. Read the entries carefully and you'll get it. Cheers.

  • JESUS

  • THESON

  • THESUNFOOLS

  • DAWHO

  • lets count how many people are stoned in this video lol

  • artsites.ucsc.edu/GDead/agdl/franklin.html#dew

  • it means every day is a new day just as the sun comes up fresh in the morning and rolls away the dew we must to, the dew is our problems the things that lay us down onto earth, but there is always a way to wipe that off of us and I believe hunter and Jerry were telling us that no matter what your problems are of yesterday when your eyes open in the day you just need to roll it all away because its a brand new day.

  • acid heads lol

  • to me, it means brushing off the bad vibes, so that we can be immersed in peacefulness

  • 2:50 I met that guy at Phish's Superball IX, he had all kinds of cool stories about touring with the Dead

  • here is to JoPa, Roll away!!!! fuck da buracrats!!!!

  • It means roll the Dube Doobie because it sounds like the

  • if i were a dead head I would be VEHEMENTLEY opposed to having my event centered around a man whos responsible for thousands of deaths.....I always thought of myself as a hippie in terms of my social responses to given situation...always positive, always wish peace love and happiness upon my brothers, i love the acid channel too....but hippies needs to use reason logic and evidence to come to conclusions on such matters....rigor, analysis, its how we get to know the world we live in.....

  • @fps0chris i posted it several times several places.....don't mix my Dead with politcs. I dont' think Jerry would have ever allowed this to happen. Very confused why the rest of them would.

  • @shakedown5000 what do u mean? look innocent hildren r dying due to ignorance....would jerry choose to just ignore that because its not "cool" to bring up those bad vibes? grow the fuck up and see reality.....im sick of dead fans who r just focused in on the scene thats in their immediate area....btw politics is bullshit!!! wake up my dude haha

  • @fps0chris umm okay i thought my comment was sort of agreeing with u. maybe i misunderstood you or you me. no need for the vulgar and hostile name calling or telling me to "grow up" but thats ur choice. u have that freedom. obama is just another puppet of the zionist nwo bankers. most people(including deadheads/hippies) dont even realize how controled and brainwashed we r. wake up indeed my dude haha.

  • @fps0chris p.s. never was focused on the scene...always the music....."if u get confused just listen to the music play"

  • @shakedown5000 i think i posted that when i was drunk my bad for the hostility...idk about the whole zionist nwo thing but certainly people in the banking world r seeking to control us....through intellectual dishonesty(keynesianism) and robberies that go along with that, inflation and not encouraging saving, not to mention manipulating interest rates distorting the market for investors

  • @shakedown5000 my anger anyway wasnt directed at u, it was directed(albeit in an inappropriate fashion) at the dead heads who get obsessed with the music to the point where the get that sophist side effect (that LSD gives) where you think its all about following that purple haze, riding the wind to the higest place possible, but imo you need philosophy and science behind you at all times, in order to get the most from such substances, other wise all u will be able to say is... "Peace man"

  • @shakedown5000 jerrys, jimi, clapton etc jobs were to give us the music, our job is to use that music (either personally or with many people) to make the world a better place, not just to get a nice feeling from it while allowing wars to happen (by supporting a coercive monopoly, that steals our money to fund wars, and then says its our war because its "Americas" war or w/e tax farm you happen to be born on

  • @shakedown5000 any sort of argument feel free to let loose..i think dead fans if they want to can actually be free..

  • Hahah man that guy cracked me up "roll away the doob"

  • it's like the hippie version of "dirt off your shoulder"

  • dear guy at 1:12 you dont belong here you arent blazed out of your mind!

  • CallousD obviously got it... the annotated dead lyrics has most of these answers but here was my theory of what it meant before i found out re: casting metals.

I thought it related to the earth's rotation and it's relation to the warming sun as it spins. there's always a new day dawning somewhere and as that dawn comes so does the evaporation of the morning's dew as morning warms and the sun "gets higher". so i always saw this as the spinning earth and sun constantly "rolling away" the dew :)

  • Put away the ideal of innocence and wake up to reality.

  • watching hippies having a good time really gives me a contact high which i really enjoy

  • Comment removed

  • Hey now STJ--thanks for watching! Off to Furthur at Red Rocks . . . cheers.!

  • @ste4ve jerrys rolling over in his grave

  • @duanekuiper roll that useless nigger obama away!!

  • I think you would all dig "old Hippie"...by the Bellamy Brothers. The mere fact we made it to the reading of the comments. St4ve, you must've felt like you were at a modern day woodstock doing all this interviewing. That had to be fun! I'm sure all kinds of "DEW" was offered your way....with the exception of the bloke with his lady on the hillside...everyone seemed loose...if not, well gassed.

  • I don't look like a hippy or pretend to be a hippy. Frankly, in this day and age, it is more of a fashion than a life concept. Though characteristics instilled in the "hippy culture" are portrayed in "hippies" behavior today, I can't say anyone that wants to dread up and dress down is a hippy. To me, hippies existed once in history and their impact was significant on the way people view society. Today, there is no agenda that brings people together; it's just music.

  • ponder this- if we sell weapons to other countries, why do we get pissed when they wanna use them against us. without love in the dream it'll never come true. thats from "help on the way"

  • I don't know what "roll away the dew" means, but the lyric that really has meaning for me is "if you get confused listen to the music play."

  • the day opportunity

    but if whallow in it

    need to surpass it

    create upon the new

  • would agree with the hippie posers comments, but in fact this video is a perfect example of community cohesiveness -- no one really knows what's going on, but we all feel and do it together! Beautiful

  • @icanspellthis

    Thanks for the kind words.

    ste4ve

  • @icanspellthis look i agree but some people get "it:" and take advantage....coming from a formally morbidly depressed person who at on point understood the allure of power over r fellow humans,,,,it exists grow the fuck up haha

  • would agreee with the hippie posers comments, but in fact this video is a perfect example of community cohesiveness -- no one really knows what's going on, but we all feel and do it together! Beautiful

  • rool away the dew. touch base. fresh wind. say hi.

  • roll away the dew, refresh

  • guy at 1:01 FTW

  • funny thing is none of these people are stoned!

  • Young lady in the purple scarf.....you are beautiful!!!!!

  • In franklin's tower there hangs a bell.... the dew process. Thank you Ben Franklin.

  • 3:08

thumbs up for all made in this model.

  • if you wanna see a gathering of deadheads, look up All Good Festival.. with Further... My ticket just came yessssssssssssssssss

  • "i don't know" would probably be theior response. if you asked them how that change they hoped for is working out?

  • After finally makin it to the show, through all the cops who were waitin along our path, and findin a way to keep myself fed the whole time, and all the trials and tribulations that came with the logistics of getting from show to show, when I heard Franklins, it was like, just let it all go, your here dancin with your family, and all is good.

  • Great idea for a project and nicely executed, congrats.

  • roll away the dew is a method for cooling metal that has been cast, like the bell in franklin's tower

if it isn't rolled away properly, the bell will crack, like the bell in Franklin's tower

  • @CallousD We have a winner.

  • Roll away the doob haha

  • it means to roll away the dew. what the dew is your choice, once its rolled away you can rejoice and dance in it.

  • Any true Dead Head would know the real answer.

The real answer, is. It means anything you want it to mean.

Robert Hunter's lyrics are meant to mean different things to different people, at different times of their life. So, the only real, wrong answer is, "I don't know."

  • I couldn't stop laughing when that guy said drink the moonshine. How do you get that from roll away the dew? lmao

  • It means free your mind.

  • Boy how ya liking that change..Ohh gawd and iam a head

  • Franklins tower-Benjamin Franklin-Liberty Bell-Simon Legree Espionage

It has alot to do with history in my opinion, but as any hippy will tell you, everything has multiple meanings, especially when on acid.

  • I think these folks never slept on the ground... when the morning comes, you're always cold, that comes with the territory, so, you roll out of your sleepin bag, start living the new day.. fire up the coffee pot etc.

  • even the maker of the video got it wrong in the end..awesome..

  • these custy asssssss people have no clue

  • roll away the dew refers to the process by which cast iron is cooled after it is shaped. A process greatly improved by Ben Franklin.......Hence Franklin's Tower .......the song is a testimony to the process by which the Liberty Bell was made.

  • @pcburgh01

Wasn't made.... which is why it cracked. But you knew more than 99% of them.

  • @JayTee441 what do you mean it wasn't made? Do you think the song literally refers to the Liberty bell and the notion of freedom.....a tribute to America? That's how i like to think about it. Ive been wrong before. LOLOLOLOLOl.......either way, a true American music classic for generations to come. Long Live the Dead

  • @pcburgh01

It wasn't chilled the right was, by 'rolling away the dew' . Thus, it cracked. The song definitely is referring to the liberty bell.

There's a great website called 'annotated dead' or something like that.... it picks apart most dead tunes. It's really interesting.

  • it means snorting a line of coke

  • Ok , so since I'm apparently the only one who actually knows what it means....It's a reference to the Liberty Bell and the reason it cracked.

  • @CRAXYFINGERS76

Its a technique in bell making where the bell is cast and rapidly cooled. During the process water droplets or dew form and are done away with by rolling it in linen or cotton sheets. I can't believe not one person knew that..

  • @0hextar0

I did.... u beat to it

  • @CRAXYFINGERS76

Specifically, it's the the phrase used to describe cooling a cast bell quickly, to lock in place stresses in the metal that tend to make a bell ring nicely. If the hot casting was not cooled the right way, it would crack. The liberty bell was chilled the wrong (french) way and it did crack. Which pissed off Benjamin Franklin.

BTW, I am POSITIVE he would have loved the Dead.

  • @JayTee441 but not as much as Thomas Jefferson!

  • It means after baking rolls, you take them out of the oven (While they're piping hot of course) and roll them across a little known field in Ireland where it is said to have been said, "When your rolls away the dew, good fortune will come to you. Howe're if in your attempt ye shall fail, then prepare to hear the Banshee's wail. To escape this wail of doom, get off your azz and roll away the dew!"

I forget the name of the Irish town.. was it Nova Scotia?

  • sails on the boat need rolling too get rid of the dew but screw that drink the moon shine

  • sails on the boat need rolling too get rid of the dew

  • Facebook me! be my friend! seriously! anyone that has a head...

  • the chick @ 2:20 kinda got it. its like... dew gathers in a blade of grass. weighs it down... if somethin's weighing ' you down, GET IT OFF YA! (Or walk me out in it)

    :^)

  • It comes from a sea chanty whose chorus contains the words "Roll away the morning dew and sweet the winds shall blow." A lot of Dead songs have their origins in folk music, of which Garcia was a huge fan and great singer, as in his collaborations with David Grisman.

  • basically this is how it is, the neo dead heads are fucking idiots! not to mention mixing in politics with the grateful dead GOOD FUCKING GOD! Jerry is rolling away the dew in his grave. morons.

  • It means wake up & smell the coffee, lay off the reefer (and other stuff) for a bit & know what you're really about. A few of these people really got stumped by this question. Happy blissful pretty hippies going to...huh?

  • 1:14 is that Jason Bay from the Mets/Red Sox?

  • Frfanklins Tower was written very close to the time of America's Bicentennial and the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia i.e Ben Franklin's tower was perhaps the inspiration. Not to get too literal since so many of his lyrics are mystical, i.e Another time's forgoitten space...

But yeah rolling the dew did have something to do with the process of casting the bell, and well...it can mean whatever you want it to mean

  • i heard its something to do with the cooling process of iron when it is cast but who knows. it means what it means to you and probably something totally different than the artist himself.

  • Doesn't it have something to do with bells?

  • to free ones self of all clutters or harsh feelings or energy

  • roll away the doo....free yourself from all the do's in life and let the four winds just blow your soul thrr your life without worry. When your have experianced perhaps

  • i heard at the dead shows years ago, it meant wake up in the morning and roll away the dew from your tent, sleeping bag, etc. in those days, everybody camped out for days at entire weekend gigs. it still happens today, but with a lot less camping

  • we need to change things; roll away the dew & start a new day. Put on a smile, walk along with me child- share a drop of the Morning Dew.

  • we need to change things; roll away the dew & start a new day. Put on a smile, walk along with share a drop of the Morning Dew.

  • I also agree on a lot of kids in my generation being so closed minded. The music of today, has no feeling. Difference between 60's music, and music now is the fact that these days, most people have completely lost their ability to feel. It's all about what will sell, and nobody tries to be original, because like i said, I believe they don't feel what they play, or write. You have to FEEL IT. Nobody chooses to write about mind exploration, our third eye, and the control we have over our reality

  • A song has no one meaning, an artists writes a song based on how they feel, what it means to the writer can be completely different from another person. We exist in a reality made up by our own mind, and however the lyrics, and the song resonates and vibrates in our mind is what it means. What I am trying to say, is the feeling IS the meaning. To me, this means keep peace of mind, and do not allow "bad" thoughts to take hold, after all, anything can be bad, if your mind perceives it to be.

  • @shishimore Learn to read poetry. I find that comment ironic and funny. I love the uneducated folks trying to impress people. It's odd the amount of juvenile insanity I have to wade through just to watch some dead videos.

  • @shishimore Yes I love the dead. What is your point? People post crap on my channel, so you think you can draw some sort of valid conclusion from that? I don't know what your point is, but you need to make it or leave me alone. YOU brought race into this you disgusting guttersnipe. I'd love to hear your theories on 9-11 lol unbelievable.

  • I need to point out - just because Hunter said he got the line from a "sea chantey" does NOT mean that is some sort of inherent meaning in the song. The whole premise of this video is nonsensical, offensive and beyond ridiculous. The meaning is an individual thing. Ever think of asking Bob Dylan fans the meaning of any of his songs?? Stupid way to frame a discussion.

  • @shishimore Drop the racial nonsense you vacuous turd. Obama has proven to be a bullshitting ad-man.

  • Yeah nothing says deadhead like cell phones, kissing the camera, and 50$ ed hardy t shirts. The movement is over, that much is obvious. The sad generation who took its place is more worried about gaga and their own ego fulfillment. Utterly vapid, disgusting and wasteful.

  • if you gotta ask, you may not be rolling away with it. "It" being whatever sets you free.

  • i loved these shows i had a great fucking time

  • What a bunch of fake ass heads, shouldnt even be there.

  • It means what that one guy said. Sweep away the negativity.

  • So, to continue, If all you're thinking about is making the next show (or party, or whatever) you're eventually gonna have nothing to show for it (harvest ice). I always thought I understood it, but that it would not apply to me. Alas, twenty some years later it kind of does. I see over 100 bands between June and October ( 8 a day at festivals, sometimes) usuall ree, and hopefully in parks. If its in SF Bay Area and in a park I'm there. This Sunday (August 1) is Jerry Day . BIG FREE CONCERT JGB.

  • I kinda gotta agree that these younger people don't really have much insite into dead lyrics, but, so what? They are havin' fun. I gotta say one thing about some of the lyrics in this song that always resonated with me. It always has seemed to me that a certain passage was speaking directly to a certain kind of obsesive Deadhead ." Some come to laugh the past away, some to make it, just one more day. Which ever way you're pleasures tend, if you plant ice, you gonna harvest wind! roll away.."

  • I really like this video.

    Good job.

If you plant ice, harvest the wind.

  • ANALOGY.....between the liberty bell ( ben franklin, philly) and gettin lost at a dead show, and even, a lighthouse....very serious tune... very easy tune(3 chords)....if you get lost just listen to the music play!!!!

  • Deadheads supporting mainstream political candidates; insert coffin nail into the "counter culture scene" of the trustafarians.

  • lol drink the moonshine

  • Listen to Jerry sing, imploring you, almost begging you, "You've GOT to Roll Away...the Dew." He ain't singing That passionately about some bell making process. He's telling you to peel away the accumulated bad things from the dark times (like dew that forms in the night). You've GOT to do this to thrive, survive, be a person, be happy, perceive clearly, and live. Of course there are layers and metaphor at work to bring the message on home. Roll away that dew or you're going through life damp.

  • @jabadoodle WTF people can't be passionate about bell making?? That's a little presumptuous no?

  • been singin this one a lot lately

roll away the dew is all bout rebirth

don't be afraid to die, let go,

    waking up, starting again,

    morning always comes

hunter and garcia, what a team

  • who was tht deuch in the ramones shirt hes not a dead fan

  • Maybe if you wouldve asked people at a real dead show when Jerry garcia was alive they couldve answered. Half those people were hippie posers.

  • @spillpain Yeah you could tell they were just there to be there. Probably jamming out to some gaga right about now. "People" like that will follow whatever's popular.

  • ha ha ya what ever it means to you is what it is =]

  • toking in the morning

  • "Rolling away the dew" is an old heat treatment process. The Liberty Bell cracked because the makers did not "Roll Away The Dew". It was improperly heat treated.

"Ill tell you where the four winds dwell

In franklins tower there hangs a bell

It can ring, turn night to day

It can ring like fire when you loose your way."

"God save the child that rings that bell

It may have one good ring, baby, you cant tell"

  • Not 1 acid test grad in the bunch. couple C minus. HIPPIE movement seem stalled. Remember to Help Instill Positive Perception In Everyone

  • ale ale heidi!!!!

  • roll away the do - - forget about all the stuff you have to do, the activity, and just be.

  • ahhh duuude! i soo wish i was there and you asked me! I was at the Harvest Fest upstate NY the day before this but couldn't make it to Penn St...

Maybe because my last name is Franklin, or because I know what a great man 'ol Bennie was... He was so smart, & "Roll Away the Dew" was his technique & warning to the people crafting the liberty bell in Philly. "If you plant ice, you're gonna harvest wind" is his warning, The brass bell wouldn't have cracked, had they heeded Franklin's words!
