  • No matter how many times I watch this scene my breath always catches when the lights go out and i hear that chord signifying that he pulled the trigger...

  • Moritz....T_T

  • Come back Ilse! Come back!

  • chills. everywhere.

  • i really like this ending as compared to Moritz inhaling deeply before the lights go out, it seems so much more real.

  • 2 people are soulless automatons.

  • is this the off broadway one?

  • I love John Gallagher Jr and Lauren Pritchard as Moritz and Ilse. I've heard the other actors but they are not as good as John and no other actress can pull Blue Wind like Lauren, they just sound annoying, no offense.

  • Yeah this is off Broadway. He didn't burn the paper on Broadway.

  • lea michel and jonahtan groff WILL ALWAYS WIN

  • @defygravitybewicked lea michele and jon groff didn't play these characters. soo comparing them doesn't make much sense...

  • @xojoannaax3 ?? this sounds like spring awakening.

  • @defygravitybewicked it is spring awakening, but these characters were never played by jonathan groff and lea michele. they played different characters in the same musical =]

  • Was this off broadway?

  • Wooow it;s awesome. Who are they? @@"

  • @kreskaqq john gallagher jr and lauren prichtard

  • OOOOH music to my ears

  • two people missed the like button

  • lauren's so beautiful... she's the best ilse, no doubt.

and JGJ is amazing, of course :)

  • @prarafan727 which role did you get cast as then? Im doing this musical too.

  • im kind of glad they cut out the part with him just burning the letter. although i like the idea it just drags this scene a little too long...

  • We're doing this at my school next year.

It has always been one of my favorites. I have the play version and soon the musical version.

Moritz is definitely one of my dream roles.

  • @thespian1466 wat kind of school do u go to?

  • @prarafan727 I go to an arts school named New World School of the Arts. It's in Miami Florida. I'm in college and just finished my sophomore year there, so I'll be a junior in the fall. :)

  • it's so nice to see these Pre-Broadway performances and notice the changes that they have made through the time.

moritz now moves and articulates a whole lot more during DDS. but in this video we can see John's legs stepping down just how it is right now (but with Ilse also doing it at the same time).

  • although some other actors may be a better moritz or ilse, NO ONE can beat these 2 as a pair. they work so well together and the scene is so much more emotional with these two. amazing!

  • Holy Crap! NO wonder he won a Tony for this

  • i have seen the performance with phoebe strole as Ilse and seen performances with other actors besides lauren and i must say hers is the best. though this scene is heartbreaking in and of itself, lauren's line about the trash heap made me tear up. add that to JGJ's line at the end with the angels and i was a goner. i have never once had that reaction before this clip. she is incredible.

  • JGJ = Best Ever. The end.

  • @TEXTUALactivity No comparison! John Gallagher IS moritz.

  • I just cried......

  • every time he put it in his mouth i cover my eyes,

    i cant help it

  • Sorry, this is a tragic scene, and I like the part where JGJ burns the letter, but after I watched it I just imagined Blake Bashoff doing one of his overexaggerated sitcom reactions while shaking the paper and watching sparks fly from it. If you know what I'm saying, then it is a hilarious image. I love Bashoff though, it's just that he does that sometimes. On the topic of this video, I think that Lauren and JGJ are amazing.

  • One thing that I have noticed: Lauren was the only Ilse to be portrayed as a damaged character. This numb look in her eyes shows that she desperatly needs help, although she's very playful and happy to undercover this fact. The other actresses only brought up the happy and funny side of Ilse. I'm not defending Lauren only because she's part of the OBC, but I only saw the depth of the character on her performance...

  • I both agree and disagree with you on this. Lauren is THE Ilse, don't get me wrong, but I find the current portrayals of Ilse are MORE tragic. The happy and funny Ilse (as you described) still has all the pain underneath, as though the innocence is trapped under the shell of pain, which in turn, is trapped under a shell of comedy. Just two different ways of interpreting such a complex character...

  • She's the original - of course she'd have one of the best grasps of the character if not the best. I find Steffi D's portrayal to be a damaged Ilse as well though - she's quirky and believably nostalgic while she's trying to convince Moritz to join her and downright heartbreaking by the time we get to the "trash heap" line.

  • i agree with this 1000 %

  • dude. AWESOME clip. it's SO near. like right in front.

  • No one will ever beat these two. Ever.

  • too true.

  • true

  • @M229929 yah

  • Haha, when JGJ grabs the mic and pole

    2:38 XD

  • actually that's the off-broadway version :)

  • thank you

  • do u know what this music is about even

  • I officially fell in love with John Gallagher Jr he is adorible and i felt that way 4 a long time

  • so whats going on?

  • i am in love with john gallagher jr. he's so perfect.

  • this scene is so incredibly heartbreaking in its raw beauty. I'm glad John won a Tony for his performance; it's truely breathtaking. And I think Lauren should have won something, she truely deserved it for a role she played so beautifully.

RIP Spring Awakening. You shall not be left behind.

  • i think iwan does him better in london....[well did him better now...*teartear*] he is more like cute and young and sweet, john is more funny and dorky. cant believe its over in both london and america.... sososo sad.

  • yeah i saw the London version, and Iwan was such a standout, and Charlotte Wakefield was amazing too, the London cast seemed to have more of an.. innocence to them i spose, they all looked younger too.

  • I agree

  • wel they still have the national tour haha

  • God, she's so pretty!

  • I love it when Moritz tugs on his blazer. He's amazing!

  • Comment removed

  • this show is just brilliant.

  • I love's Lauren's monologue before she sings. I am reading the book now and too bad that that isn't in it.

  • wow. I didn't realize he originally burnt the letter. Very powerful but they probably cut it because it too too long.

  • Lauren Pritchard is utterling brillaint. Wow.

  • this musical is the best thing that ever came to broadway. i miss it so much.

  • lauren pritchard best voice for this musical her and the girl who plays martha in the OBC

  • ilse has the most compelling stillness ...she's so amazing ..gahh this musical is the best

  • Absolutely. Why did they take that away for the Broadway performance. This is mezmerising in it's simplicty. Just brilliant. Even Lauren's other live versions didn't quite reproduce this beauty.

  • i prefer this off broadway version. the moment when he bruns the letter breaks my heart

  • this is one of the most amazing videos ever.

  • This is my favorite musical ever.

  • I love how he had never had a vocal lesson before joining Spring Awakening...and he got a Tony for his performance...haha that's amazing! And no one has the same edge to their voice like he does (as far as the other Moritz's I've heard and seen). JGJ is truly unique! :)

  • They started the music too soon, but he recovered perfectly.

    Talent, talent, talent, talent, jealously.

  • Wonderful voices. Such incredible talent.

  • omg i still cry every time i see this scene : ) its sooo good!!!

  • shes right it is off broadway

  • this was one of the sadest and best parts of the show. I love John Gallagher Jr and I'm gonna marry him someday.

  • love love love the way he says "you remember?"

  • One of my favorite scenes in the show. It makes me cry everytime. The weird thing is I think I cry for Ilse more than I do Moritz.

  • This is totally off-Broadway!

  • love it!! but does it sound slow at the start of the song? or is it just me?

  • amazing <3

    *chills*

  • i think the obc is good but i like the cbc better. =)

  • Thank you so incredibly much for posting this.

  • omg thankkkkkk you for this!!!!!!!!!!!

  • wow this version is different. it is much more melancholic. i love how the actors change minor things and it gives a completely differently feel to the scene.

  • does any1 kno where i can find the part before this and this included like a longer video

  • I can give you the full version of the show. I have the link.

  • ok what is it

  • do u have anything awesome to trade?

  • like what

  • oh my god what is it???

  • AHH what is it??

  • is it the off broadway version??

  • myspace videos has the entire show; both on and off-broadway

  • Does anyone know what Ilse says about "lying on some trash heap?" She says something right before but I can't make it out.

  • "By the time you finally wake up, I'll be lying in some trash heap."

  • Is it weird that this makes me cry?

  • Why should it be? It's a sad part of the play!

  • John Gallagher Jr. Is the Best Moritz in the world... and Lauren has one of the sexiest sounding voices I've ever heard, along side with original Amneris from Aida (in "every story is a Love Story", Colbie Caillat and Sara Barielles. and there's more... but these women have such beautiful sounding voices it's really amazing... and it's not necessarily the quality of there singing abilties but the sound and how they use that sound.

  • lauren's voice is so sultry and beautiful!

  • I like the new cast too... That new girl has such a powerful voice...

  • god... i love this <33333

  • What's that paper he's burning? Is that the letter from Melchi's mom?

Oh and does anyone know what Ilse says about "lying on the trash heap"? Cause I didn't hear the bit before.

  • Ilse says "you know. by the time you finally wake up I'll be lying on some trash heap."

  • i love lauren and john together!

  • SO was it kind of like they always loved each other?

  • Spring Awakening is the most incredible show I've ever seen. Seeing the original cast was great. John so deserved the Tony he won, and Lauren blew me away. Great voice!!

  • has anybody noticed that these people carry like everything in their pockets? Microphones, matches, pocket knives (those you've known), guns... But honestly--this scene is so powerful--i could watch it all day

  • I think the 'pocket knife' you're mentioning is actually a razor, like the ones that barbers use[d?].

  • I am addicted to all things Spring Awakening. It is beyond my control right now.

  • o god i wish i was that microphone im in love with jgals

  • Lauren reminds me of Tammy Blanchard.

  • wow, he is amazing! im so glad i got to see this at least on youtube! he is so original and doesn't make predictable choices. He also doesn't play it melo-dramatic, which is easy to do. It's sad cuz he seemed to be in the show for such little time or something...

  • this scene makes me cry every time...

i love how the first match was an epic failure though. it lightened the mood a little bit.

  • i've also never seen the fire paper thing on stage before!

  • The pure energy of this scene is unbelievable. When Phoebe or Emma is playing Ilse, they do well don't get me wrong, but Lauren Pritchard doesn't play Ilse humorously and from the way I interpret this, she is correct. As for John, Moritz is in everything he does on stage. You can see it in every angled knee cap or nervous gesture. These two were so amazing together and I truly miss the time when they performed this as a team. Despite any flaw they had their performance completely made up for it.

  • Lauren Pritchard's voice and performance is positively haunting!

  • Did he forget his line or something...that was an awfully long pause. but he is still awesome though =).

  • his match blew out the 1st time :^)

  • The best show on broadway now. Went to see it last December, was amazing...this scene was especially moving! :-D

  • The best show on broadway now. Went to see it last December, was amazing...this scene was especially moving! :-D

  • ahh im crying :( amazing

  • I was cry ing so bad i was like the loudest i felt so bad biggest i was making noises

  • OH MY GOD NO, this video can't end like that!!!!!!!!! does he shoot himself?? do you hear the gunshot??? someone reply to meeeeee!!

  • yes sadly moritz does commit suicide, but you don't here the gun shot

i think most people will agree with me but when i saw it live i was crying like a baby and i absoulutley love john gallagher Jr.

  • i was crying so hard at that part! he was so hot! and so kool. WHY!!!?!?

  • yea he goes up 2 the pearly gates .

  • i dont like her voice...its husky, but not in a good way. its just thin and harsh

    JOHNNY IS AMAZING THOUGH<3

  • What are you talking about??????????

Lauren owns. Thats why this musicakl is so cool, becuase you wouldn't see her in Wicked or anything. plus it adds to her character. Ilse contrasts with someone like Wendla, so thier voices are different too. Its like in Les Mis where even if Cosset and Eponine are singing the same note, their voices purposely have a very different quality

  • I think the huskiness is a TOTAL turn on. Her voice is HOT! I had more issues with his voice than hers.

  • lauren's voice is amazing!

  • and to renthead102, this is OMGitsGordy, I was on my brothers account when I didn't really know.

  • i had no idea that she was leaving. she was by far my favorite character! i saw it last thursday and i feel so lucky now to have seen her!

  • I just saw her on her last day! She's so awesome and will be missed. Good Luck Lauren!

  • Me too! I love her! It's so sad that she left.

  • At times I can't stand it when a cast members leaves from a fantastic show. Lauren will be missed =(. She will always be Ilse for me. But goodluck to her in whatever she's going to due next. =)~

  • Awe, I cant believe Lauren's last night is SO SOON D:

  • WHAT?!?!?!? holy shit what?! when is Laurens last night!!! omg!! What?!

  • ya she's leaves on Feb. 17.......:(

  • oh wow...woo~ I'm seeing it feb 12th, so thats a bit of a relief

  • Who is replacing her?

  • All I know is that some girl named Emily (I think) is replacing her. She was at the Pizza Party on Sunday with the cast. (I was not there, but my friend was, and I am jealous haha)

  • Um..I think her name was Emma Huston or something like that...I'm not sure. I was on BroadwayWorld last night and looked her up. She's now the youngest member of the cast, since she is only 16.

  • Emma Hunton,

At first, I thought it was Emma Bunton...Baby Spice.

That was a scary thought. But Emma Hunton is actually really good.

  • OK, I was close at least. I just wish I could've seen Lauren as Ilse before she left.

  • I prefer Lauren. I saw her last show, it was so emotional. Emma's great though.

I think Lilli Cooper is 16 too. Or she's probably older now, but she started the show at 16. It's crazy how good these kids are.

  • I LOVE JOHN GALLAGHER...im so sad he left the show =(

  • I love him too!

Fear not, though, I saw his replacement tonight and he was incredible.

    Almost as good as John.

  • This girl is my hero. She is so amazing, her voice gives me chills, especially this song. This whole musical is amazing! I wish i could go see it!

  • Whenever I see this in NYC, I cry for the rest of the show!

  • Lauren Pritchard's acting was PHENOMENAL Off-Broadway! I just wished that she never changed that when the show moved to Broadway. :( She depicted the role perfeclty here!

  • What did you think made her acting phenomenal offbroadway? And what did she really change when she was on broadway? And in case youre wondering...i'm just on this one to check some old comment replies.

  • just type in "gallagher and pritchard" to listen to the audio of their broadway performance, and then you'll know what i'm talking about.

  • is it just me or does she kinda look like Meg White?

    it's just me.

GREAT preformance though. I'd so be begging to see it, but I live in Texas.

  • thank you so much for this!

  • you don't happen to have Left Behind do you?

  • It might be stupid but what does the lyrics to blue wind mean? Spring and summer...every other day? What does that mean?

  • my guess: "spring and summer was everyday..." even when it was winter when they were children... but now, that their innocence is gone, it's more like winter.

:) that made more sense then i thought it would.

  • That make sense now! Thx. I guess sater's lyrics are a little too abstract sometimes.

  • Lauren brings on the fire baby. Her blue wind is still the best.

  • This script is a masterpiece...so simple, pure and touching. Thanks for the video :)

  • BEST SONG FROM THE SHOW.

  • I know that this isn't relevent to this video but I just have to say that I am possibly a living Moritz Stiefel. It's because when my dad was alive he would compare me to other kids that he thougth were better than me. Now I am pissed only now because I can actually see why he did that!

  • this is one of my favorite songs ever!!!!!

    OMG AMAZING!!!

  • Was this pre Broadway? Cus I saw this right before the Tony Awards and I don't remember the bit with burning the paper. That was a very intresting and powerful moment, though... I could see why they would cut it though, it took up alot of time.

  • this was the off broadway run

  • ahhh i got the chills through this song it wwas amazing i am going to see it again yes!!

p.s. does anybody know if there is an illegal video of my junk

  • yessss yessss myspace vids look up em on myspace!!! ;D

  • gotta love illegal videos!
