No matter how many times I watch this scene my breath always catches when the lights go out and i hear that chord signifying that he pulled the trigger...
I love John Gallagher Jr and Lauren Pritchard as Moritz and Ilse. I've heard the other actors but they are not as good as John and no other actress can pull Blue Wind like Lauren, they just sound annoying, no offense.
@defygravitybewicked it is spring awakening, but these characters were never played by jonathan groff and lea michele. they played different characters in the same musical =]
@prarafan727 I go to an arts school named New World School of the Arts. It's in Miami Florida. I'm in college and just finished my sophomore year there, so I'll be a junior in the fall. :)
it's so nice to see these Pre-Broadway performances and notice the changes that they have made through the time.
moritz now moves and articulates a whole lot more during DDS. but in this video we can see John's legs stepping down just how it is right now (but with Ilse also doing it at the same time).
although some other actors may be a better moritz or ilse, NO ONE can beat these 2 as a pair. they work so well together and the scene is so much more emotional with these two. amazing!
i have seen the performance with phoebe strole as Ilse and seen performances with other actors besides lauren and i must say hers is the best. though this scene is heartbreaking in and of itself, lauren's line about the trash heap made me tear up. add that to JGJ's line at the end with the angels and i was a goner. i have never once had that reaction before this clip. she is incredible.
Sorry, this is a tragic scene, and I like the part where JGJ burns the letter, but after I watched it I just imagined Blake Bashoff doing one of his overexaggerated sitcom reactions while shaking the paper and watching sparks fly from it. If you know what I'm saying, then it is a hilarious image. I love Bashoff though, it's just that he does that sometimes. On the topic of this video, I think that Lauren and JGJ are amazing.
One thing that I have noticed: Lauren was the only Ilse to be portrayed as a damaged character. This numb look in her eyes shows that she desperatly needs help, although she's very playful and happy to undercover this fact. The other actresses only brought up the happy and funny side of Ilse. I'm not defending Lauren only because she's part of the OBC, but I only saw the depth of the character on her performance...
I both agree and disagree with you on this. Lauren is THE Ilse, don't get me wrong, but I find the current portrayals of Ilse are MORE tragic. The happy and funny Ilse (as you described) still has all the pain underneath, as though the innocence is trapped under the shell of pain, which in turn, is trapped under a shell of comedy. Just two different ways of interpreting such a complex character...
She's the original - of course she'd have one of the best grasps of the character if not the best. I find Steffi D's portrayal to be a damaged Ilse as well though - she's quirky and believably nostalgic while she's trying to convince Moritz to join her and downright heartbreaking by the time we get to the "trash heap" line.
this scene is so incredibly heartbreaking in its raw beauty. I'm glad John won a Tony for his performance; it's truely breathtaking. And I think Lauren should have won something, she truely deserved it for a role she played so beautifully.
RIP Spring Awakening. You shall not be left behind.
i think iwan does him better in london....[well did him better now...*teartear*] he is more like cute and young and sweet, john is more funny and dorky. cant believe its over in both london and america.... sososo sad.
yeah i saw the London version, and Iwan was such a standout, and Charlotte Wakefield was amazing too, the London cast seemed to have more of an.. innocence to them i spose, they all looked younger too.
Absolutely. Why did they take that away for the Broadway performance. This is mezmerising in it's simplicty. Just brilliant. Even Lauren's other live versions didn't quite reproduce this beauty.
I love how he had never had a vocal lesson before joining Spring Awakening...and he got a Tony for his performance...haha that's amazing! And no one has the same edge to their voice like he does (as far as the other Moritz's I've heard and seen). JGJ is truly unique! :)
wow this version is different. it is much more melancholic. i love how the actors change minor things and it gives a completely differently feel to the scene.
John Gallagher Jr. Is the Best Moritz in the world... and Lauren has one of the sexiest sounding voices I've ever heard, along side with original Amneris from Aida (in "every story is a Love Story", Colbie Caillat and Sara Barielles. and there's more... but these women have such beautiful sounding voices it's really amazing... and it's not necessarily the quality of there singing abilties but the sound and how they use that sound.
Spring Awakening is the most incredible show I've ever seen. Seeing the original cast was great. John so deserved the Tony he won, and Lauren blew me away. Great voice!!
has anybody noticed that these people carry like everything in their pockets? Microphones, matches, pocket knives (those you've known), guns... But honestly--this scene is so powerful--i could watch it all day
wow, he is amazing! im so glad i got to see this at least on youtube! he is so original and doesn't make predictable choices. He also doesn't play it melo-dramatic, which is easy to do. It's sad cuz he seemed to be in the show for such little time or something...
The pure energy of this scene is unbelievable. When Phoebe or Emma is playing Ilse, they do well don't get me wrong, but Lauren Pritchard doesn't play Ilse humorously and from the way I interpret this, she is correct. As for John, Moritz is in everything he does on stage. You can see it in every angled knee cap or nervous gesture. I know that this isn't relevent to this video but I just have to say that I am possibly a living Moritz Stiefel. It's because when my dad was alive he would compare me to other kids that he thougth were better than me. Now I am pissed only now because I can actually see why he did that!
Was this pre Broadway? Cus I saw this right before the Tony Awards and I don't remember the bit with burning the paper. That was a very intresting and powerful moment, though... I could see why they would cut it though, it took up alot of time.
No matter how many times I watch this scene my breath always catches when the lights go out and i hear that chord signifying that he pulled the trigger...
