I'm not sure how much you saw of the cop pepper spraying the students, but I have seen a large video of it. The cops that felt threatened were behind those students. The students surrounded the officers and refused to let them leave unless they released the students they had arrested before hand. The police warned them multiple times that they would be pepper sprayed if they didn't move and it happened. The students had their hoods up and heads down preparing.

After they sat at no point did I see the police step over them. Once I find that video I saw again I will post it here. You can actually use some peppers like Bhut Nolokia to make your own peppersprays(That work fairly well.), and in the same way its actually possible to use pepperspray in your food(In small doses that is.).

I have great respect for the students depicted in the video:
they refuse to be intimidated by a flagrant physical assault & their friends have the discipline not to retaliate violently. I have to wonder if the purpose of attacking the protesters was an unsuccessful attempt to incite such a retaliation.

Well, sorry to say, but she is somewhat right. Pepper spray is just the capsaicin from peppers, so it is a product of a food. And I eat Ghost Peppers all the time (on their pretty terrible list, the "bhut Jolokia"). Still doesn't make it right what the cops did, but just a point.
