I live only a few hours away from the Argonne. I go there regularly and have been going there for as far as I can remember. My father has taken me hiking a few times in forests that actually used to be battlefields. It's very strange, you're there in the middle of the forest, surrounded by all this beautiful nature but everywhere you look you see rusty bomb casings, barb wire, spikes, even boots scattered on the ground. You can actually still see the remains of the bomb-craters and trenches.
My great grandfather might be in one of these clips. He was announced MIA at Argonne then announced KIA soon afterward but to my families surprise came home alive.
Henry Gunther, a doughboy from Baltimore, on Nov 11 at 10:55 am, did a suicide rush at a German machine gun nest, to redeem himself for some kind of cloud of cowardice he had done a few days before, and was probably the last yank killed in the war.
@reglcon1234 My great great grandpa was gassed as well and died in the Argonne. Another grandpa was killed by a direct hit from an artillery shell. Wars sad :(
Coolage...We are greatful for their sacrifices. I think we are practically neighbors, Im in Roxbury. We have a memorial here listing all the war deaths (I believe) from Civil war on. Ive seen the memorials in Delhi and Margretville.
ive been studying ww1 since i first was taught about it by a substitute teacher in 3rd grade...i had a great great uncle in the argonne... he was lucky to make it...i have so much respect for theses guys i cant even begin to explain! awesome videos
I'm not sure why but I've been on a World War I kick since Christmas. Maybe it's because my grandfather, yes GRANDFATHER (1881 - 1976) fought in the Argonne. He was a Navajo man from Window Rock, AZ. He was injured in battle and was awarded a purple heart. I was just at his grave today.
my great grandfather fought in the argonne forest and was gassed by the germans but lived the best part aboutmy great grandfathers story is that he was a whilhelm and was related to the kasiser and when they moved over here had to change there last name and he fought against his own country
I'm honored your great grandfather made such a sacrifice for this country. WWI was, and still IS, the root of MOST of the worlds conflicts today. Thank you
My great Uncle Ralph Riley died in this battle Oct. 16th after being on the front for 1.5 years. He was 21 years old and hailed from Binghamton New York. I will make sure that my children know his sacrifice as my mother did me. This is more than an emotionless documentary, it still holds raw emotion in the hearts of some till this day.
Good to hear. World War I was on of the pivital events in human history. It was the "war to end all wars". WWII overshadows WWI but "The Great War" was unlike anything ever seen.
