Shemp, Curly and Moe were brothers. Shemp started with the Stooges in 31-33, then left, and Curly took over. Then when Curly got sick and couldn't do it anymore, Shemp came back in 47 or so. Both Shemp and Curly were awesome, but in different ways. Curly was very vaudevillian, very athletic and quick. Shemp was awesome at being clumsy and bumbling, but innocent at the same time. Everything after Shemp passed away wasn't really worth watching in my opinion.

@peaceandmetal88 No actually it was first moe and Shemp in 1922 then in 1925 Larry came along. In 1930, Moe, Larry and Shemp left Ted Healy but then they came back in 1933, with Curly replacing Shemp because Shemp had a solo career. In 1934, Moe, Larry and Curly left Healy for the last time and went off to work for Columbia.

Shemp was the best stooge! It was funny when Moe picked on him. It was funny that Shemp would slap Larry around when Moe wasn't there. And that both Curley and Shemp were in an episode together.

Shemp was actually my favorite of the "third" stooges. Relatively speaking, his delivery was just so laid-back and quiet, it made a perfect counter-cadence to Moe and Larry's antics.

Curly was great, and Curly-Joe had his moments (Joe was horrible), but Shemp is my definite favorite.

Shemp played the bully in the stage version, but when he replaced Curley in the film version, Moe was already established as the bully in that, so Shemp had to shift roles. He did a good job, as a victim. Especially for someone more accustomed to the bully role. He was only supposed to be filling in for Curley, till he got better, which he never did.

Oh yeah. I read 1 Stooge book, way back when I don't think there were more than 1 or 2, and that was the story in there. Since then, I read as many articles as I can, and since the internet came about, I have even more sources to draw from. A few details vary slightly, from one version to another. I watched the Moe interview here on YT, and even he got some of the minor details a bit off. I do computer art. I didn't get any work done yesterday, because I was caught up in my Stooge Quest.

Shemp was very underrated. Yes, Curly was great. But when he had to step down, Shemp brought a different but very funny approach. Now when Shemp died and was replaced by Joe Besser -- that's when the act jumped the shark.
