Excellent! This is why I love hip-hop...The Roots are such wonderful musicians and wordsmiths...Now if only there were more artists like him and less like Drake, Lil' Wayne and other such garbage...
Did anyone else notice that the killer at the end is wearing the same clothes that Redford was wearing in the 2nd video? So I guess they are saying that he killed himself. Dang this album is crazy good.
i've listened to this album 5 times now and it might be the closest thing ive ever heard to a perfect album. not just in hip hop but musically. thought provoking, inspiring, truly great hip hop is out there in abundance, you just have to know where to look. music like this deserves to be recognized like it was in the past. undun, section 80, return of 4eva, house of balloons. there were some great hip hop albums this year, i just wish more ppl got the chance to hear them
finally!!! I haven't heard rap not talking about being in a club and smoking weed in quite a awhile. The Roots always come through when music can't get any worse.
Malik B from The Roots should be on this album. This mix tape style seems like it comes from his Street Assult mix tape. He also had a single called "Mob Ties". I think it's on Itunes.
As with any 2-1-5 album, I eagerly await the transformation each of these songs can/will take when performed live. With the roots you get songs twice. You get the songs when the album comes out and then you get the amped live version that is often even doper. Best band. Favourite band.
Tell Jimmy you need a couple months to stroll the globe and make a couple million fans happy. It's been a minute since your last tour fellas
Black Though is the only artist who can tell a story like this these days, Talib Kweli said that Black was the greatest rapper alive, he might just be right
"At the end of the day...isn't that what we all do? "
No, that's called being a narcissistic! Great video of a psychopath who have not been told the difference between reality and consequences. And that's the problem with a lot of American youth--there is no accountability for actions. Its their environment has to change or its going continue to become more deaths than the Rwandan genocide.
@GreatWoman That's kind of the point that the album tries to make - that the problem with criminals are not the minds that they have, but rather the lack of direction they are given. I think you and the roots see more eye-to-eye on the issue than you think. Also, amazing album! Lovin' it!
@GreatWoman You missed the point. They are speaking metaphorically, in that we all do what we need to do to get by in this world. Be it taking a corporate job that you do not like so that you can feed your family, or stealing food from a grocery store because you have no money to buy it. They are not debating the morality of the kids' (or our own) actions. They are simply saying that on some level we all do this. It's not necessarily narcissism, just self-preservation. And there is a difference.
Just listened to the album also on NPR. In my opinion "The Otherside" is definitely my favorite on the album. The drums are poppin' and the flow's ridiculous on that track. This is one group that keeps getting better with age. Even at 40 y/o, Black Thought can outspit just about any rapper.
JUST HEARD THE ALBUM FROM AN ONLINE STREAM AT NPR.COM
TIP THE SCALE AND SLEEP ARE VERY POWERFUL SONGS. AND THE UNDUN VIDEOS ARE SO "IN YOUR FACE" THAT THEY DEMAND YOUR UNDIVIDED ATTENTION! I SALUTE THE ROOTS FOR MAKING IT HAPPEN ONCE MORE.
