  • Can you all see Looney Tunes and Bugs,Elmer,Sylvester and the random other lesser known 1 time charachters in their place!? Wow! what an influence Kaye and Sills had on the Toons of the 40,s and 50's!!!

  • is there sheet music for this????????

  • I love seeing how much fun they are both having around 5:10!

For those who weren't around U.S. television at the time to catch the references: At 5:05, Ms. Sills sings a reference from a Kentucky Fried Chicken advertisement. Around 6:03 is the song straight from a popular Meow Mix cat food advertisement . The "Dy-no-mite" reference (1:27) was a very popular catch-phrase from a character on the sit-com "Good Times."

Danny's part borrows from his excellent 1945 movie "Wonder Man."

  • bellissimo!!! :-DDD

  • Beverly sills singing a piece of lakme!! that's great, it's beatiful, super weird and just wonderful

  • Top ten on my list of best ever things to watch

    Thank you fir posting it

  • WONDERFUL! I enjoyed this enormously! What an amazing video! What fun! Thank you!

  • Sills lady is Very good :)

  • Excellent, I love Danny Kaye, Oh this video made me laugh and brought tears of joy to my eyes.

    Thanks for posting this.

  • This video is great.

  • Fantastic video! Thanks for posting.

  • Delightful! Beverly and Danny are wonderful together and seem to be having a splendid time mixing grand opera with contemporary music (even the famous MEOW MIX jingle!). What a pity that good, clean entertainment like this is so rarely seen today. Thanks for sharing.

  • Sheer class , thankx for posting this absolute gem of a piece :)

Dahhy seems to be albe to sing with anyone even classical, brilliant dueting with Bev sills.

  • Haha, this is so great! "Sinatra!"

  • So cute!! Beverly Sills seemed like a really fun person : )

  • Name one other coloratura who came close - Bev was the greatest! RIP

  • such talent ...superb..tnk for the posting

  • the cadenzas in order are from:

1 - una voca poco - il barbiere di siviglia

    2 - o luce di quest'anima - linda di chamounix

    3 - the bell song - lakme

4 - and of course un di felice eterea - la traviata

(note, i'm listing what aria the cadenza are from, not all of the arias and duets in this video)

  • This brought such good memories -- I just loved Danny Kaye when I was a kid. Thanks for posting that!

  • I'm crying so hard now with laughter at this and slight sorrow at the passing of Beverly. I wish I had been alive in this Golden Era

  • Such a delight:)

  • I loled at "Sitnatra" and the Meow Mix song! (Bev has a pretty meow.) The La Traviata part at the end was soo sweet!

  • No matter HOW many times I watch this it still cracks me up and I just ADORE it!!!! Bevery I cannot getenough of your Television apprearances!Brava Diva!

  • When was this ?

  • must have been from the Good Times Dy-no-myte era!

  • I am such a fan of Dan & I thank you for posting this from the bottom of my heart.

  • this is brilliant...

    !

  • Excellent. Brings back fond memory. Notice that the expressions of the eyes of Danny Kaye were copies by Benny Hill as well !!!

  • I remember seeing this on TV!!! How wonderful to see it again, thank you so much!

  • Amazing, rare, wonderful video clip! From all of us fans who would NEVER have seen this delightful performance... THANK YOU! They were a hoot together. Obviously, Danny (and probably Silvia Fine) rearranged the opera number from his film "Wonder Man" for this "two-et" and used several of the main gags from it (Like "Francke"... "Sinatra"! etc.). What was cool was seeing that it all still got big laffs and worked so well in this live performance. And Sills was adorable, wasn't she? TY for posting

  • Ms. Sills,

Thank you so much for posting this. I was (am?) a big Danny Kaye fan.

    From another Brooklyn boy,

    Melvin

  • he still makes me lol and happy - God bleas u Danny .

and thank you "beverlysills " for bringing this to us

  • THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING THIS VIDEO WITH FANS OF BEVERLY AND DANNY, THEY ARE SORELY MISSED!!!! ST from OHIO

  • IRRÉSISTIBLE, voiçi bien la preuve que l'art n'exclu pas l'humour.

  • This parody came from his movie "Wonder Man," in which he plays monozygotic twins being chased by the mob for having seen a murder. Brilliant film, brilliant clip, brilliant man!

  • Just brilliant and hilarious! What wonderful talents, the both of them.

  • What a fantastic find! Bubbles and Danny Kaye together---they were wonderful. You can see where Beverly even cracks him up... great video. Thanks so much!

  • What a pair. Both with such a brilliant sense of timing and humour.Bravo Brooklyn We miss you both

  • Kaye was from the East New York section of Brooklyn, so I was told, and called the "Brooklyn Kid". An actor on Seinfeld does a lot of Kaye's physical humor in his performances as Kramer. Thanks for the memories.

  • I love this video!! Beverly is fabulous

  • haha wow that's a great video...i love danny kaye!

  • i'm in love with danny kaye

  • me too ^^ he's a cutey!

  • I'm standing and clapping!!!

  • danny kaye makes me love life

  • What immense talent those 2 had - each in his/her own way! Thanks for posting!

  • Thanks for posting this. I'm a Danny Kaye fan and didn't know he'd ever reprised this number from "Up in Arms". Beverly was the perfect choice for partner.

  • I always liked Beverly because she never took herself seriously.

  • You know, I didn't realize that the Russian Jewish invasion in Bklyn had begun so long ago!

These are 2 pillars of talent. I'm grateful that I got to meet Miss Sills. They don't make'em like they use ta.

  • Now THIS is real entertaiment.

  • Danny never fails to make me smile!

  • terrific..the complete consumate performers!

  • I did not know she did

but what a great spirited lady

  • I still cant believe she died i remember what a joy she was in real life as well as the stage life.

  • Wsn't she the greatest? I feel like cryig!

  • Man i cry like a babe. and i born on de 60´s,

there is no era to be good, they are for ever.

  • my side hurts!!!!!

Thanks. NOW, someone needs to find the video of Danny conducting Flight of the Bumblebee with a flyswatter.

Julia from San Antonio whose mom got to be in the chorus during the operas from mid 60s to late 70s, many of which were headlined by Miss Sills

  • Unbelievable! The charm and sheer joy of this performace made me cry over the loss of two brilliant artists. She was so wonderful and inspired me to listen to opera through her PBS specials and tv appearances. Bubbles changed my life. Danny Kaye was a perfect and inimitable performer who always made me laugh. I am so heartbroken that she is gone but grateful that her videos and music remain.

  • I can't watch this without crying the whole way through. They just don't make them like these two National Treasures anymore. Dear God they were both utterly brilliant.

  • RIP, Bubbly, the world has lost a ray of light now. She had such a wonderful personality. Danny Kaye's cute too.

  • Just hearing once more her brilliant tones made me weep anew! Thank you for posting two of my favorite performers together...to be enjoyed forever.

  • RIP dear Beverly!!! and to Danny Kaye, one of my all time favorite people!!!! Sharon T. from Ohio,

thanks for sharing this segment with us

  • RIP Beverly. You were amazing. Heaven's choir has a new outstanding member.

And RIP to Danny Kaye as well. You are missed tremendously where good, clean, and honestly funny guys are hard to find nowadays.

  • Thanks, Bob32540, your comment is touching.

  • Remember the hilarious special she did with Carol Burnett? It led to a lifelong friendship. Anyone who's a best friend of Burnett has to be a fine person! Joke; of course I already knew she was. The Burnett show is on DVD. I heard her crying over Beverly on radio last night and it broke my heart.

  • It's comforting to believe that somewhere in the far reaches of the universe, soundwaves still carry her voice; and that somewhere in a distant galaxy she will let them know that on earth there was beauty,

ever if for a brief time.

    Fly, Bev. We'll miss you.

  • Bless you, lovely lovely lady! xoxo DJ

  • Go Brooklyn!!! We'll miss you Bev...You were one Classy Dame! Be see'n ya....

  • My deepest sympathy to Miss Sills' family. She truly brough opera to all of us here in the U.S.A and we'll miss her a lot!

  • Bravisima!!!! A wonderful woman...

  • Rest in eternal peace, our queen of opera.

  • aww this was so great :)

  • *sighs* This video is why she was so wonderful. She was unassuming, unpretentious and funny as all get out. AND, the woman could sing so wonderfully. As a singer myself, I aspire to that ease. Bless her.

  • We love you Beverly. May you rest in eternal peace.

  • Uh - she WAS gorgeous in many ways that didn't have anything to do with looks, but she was also "pretty in face" (as they said in "The King and I")

  • Beverly Sills is terminally ill I just read in the news.

  • Oh no, she died - Monday - age 78. May flights of angels sing her to her rest.

  • She's not the most gorgeous of women, but the longer I watched, the cuter she got. I pulled this up for Danny Kaye. I had to wiki Beverly Sills. I learned something today!!!

  • Sills is so charming! Her singing is always lovely.

  • Was this before or after Beverly (and Danny, for that matter) appeared on "The Muppet Show"?

  • WAY before... at least 10 yrs...

  • This is an excerpt from the Emmy Award-winning program, "Danny Kaye's Look-In at the Metropolitan Opera" (1975), featured on "The CBS Festival of Lively Arts for Young People."

I have a recording of the entire show, featuring James Levine, Robert Merrill, Rosalind Elias and a very young (and not yet famous) Jose Carreras. Truly delightful.

  • primerib:

how come in 1975 the program was broadcast in black and white? by that time everything was in living color.

  • It was broadcast in Color in the U.S.

Other countries did not have color until much later. Also, the networks sometimes only made a copy of a show in B+W for posterity. Color debuted (as we know it now) on 12/17/53, and I remember seeing it in the late 50's but it only became common in the 60's.

  • It was in color. We had it for music classes and her dress is a lovely medium blue. Went with her wonderful hair color. The whole program was wonderful and great for kids to see.

  • A classic. As an in-the-trenches musician, I can categorically say that nobody could pull this off today.

  • Danny Kaye, and Beverly Sills! What a riot!! These two feed off of each other!!! FABULOUS!!!

  • He does this in Wonder Man!! I love this skit!

  • I love the Meow Mix part...ahhh, Danny. We miss you so. Thanks for the post!!

  • I like your video clip and have rated it as awesome. Please check out mine on some old trading cards of famous people: Danny Kaye, Lord Baden-Powell of the scout movement, Winston Churchill, Louis Armstrong, Charlie Chaplin, Yuri Gagarin, Walt Disney....

  • Oh, thank you. thank you. I adored Danny.

  • Wat a wonderfull sight! Thanks!

  • Fabulous. Simply fabulous.

  • i "met" danny kaye short ago, and now i can't get enough! where can i find some more? any dvd's, any shows i can find on amazon? (i'm becoming an uncle soon, and i need my nephew to know him :P)

  • When I grew up, I always loved Danny Kaye. To this day, thinking about Danny Kaye is like thinking of a good old friend. I wish he were still here.

  • I love Danny so much. Before he even does anything I start to grin, because I know it's going to be funny! I wish I was born in a time when he was popular, I feel like I missed so much.

  • Thank you! Wonderful

  • What can one add to the general comments about this fantastic artists ? We know Danny Kaye's wit for movies ant TV and we are not surprised at the wonderful, HUGE, talent Sills always had ! Her coloraturas are otherwordly perfect. Her work with Miss Liebling paid off !

  • Beverly Sills so Cute and so GOOD... Danny Kaye was such a wonderful versitile performer.... they just don't make 'em like that anymore....

  • wonderful....hilarious!!!!

  • Thank you! I hadn't seen this since it was originally on TV when I was 16 back in 1975! Hilarious!

  • I remember my mom talking about this performance, but I never believed it! Who'da thought Beverly Sills could keep up with Danny in a parody!

You started my morning with a grin, thanks!

  • This is fantastic! Absolutely hilarious and it shows opera and classical music can be fun too. :D Thank you so much for posting this!

  • ah, good ol' danny. i'm so glad my dad raised me on old tyme tv and radio, else i'd never enjoy this so much.

I love it! Thanks a lotttt!

  • Fantastic! Thank you for putting this up.

  • That was so wonderful. Thank you for posting.
