Maybe instead of fixing the symptom (poor housing in refugee camps) our energies should be spent in solving the problem (the need for refugee camps), which is probably caused by authoritarian or racist sociopaths violently driving people off their land?
That is totally cool! Something like that would be awesome if you had a large yard with a Japanese garden. It could be a nice retreat area to just be outside, but be out of the direct sunlight. If I had a bigger yard, I would build something like that. Also, that would be a great idea for a storage shed. =)
To move 5 million pallets 500 miles inland in a war or disaster zone sounds like a good GREENIE idea for a waste product until you start figuring shipping cost. If there isn't a controlling organization to actually build the shelters the refugees will just stay under their tarps and use the wood for fire. Good for local projects like the video, garden shed, playhouse, bird blind. Now it is good for local homeless since pallets a readily available.
would be better to use the same amount of wood in a non-pallet form and just build a simple structure - but when it gets cold will people start burning their house ?
Sure, all you need is brand new clean pallets, a substantial team of builders, a compressor with nail guns, some lumber, and shity music, and you too can have a crappy house. That is not a ready solution for anything.
I'm not surprised it got an award though, academics... well... let's just say they belong where they are.
@orbit789321 timber like that in the UK (hot damp summers / cold wet winters) 2 years 3 at a push, but where these would be used in 3rd world areas where the air is a lot dryer easy 10 years minimum
@danielsayles pallets are made with such cheap lumber/ materials is it worth shipping all those pallets assembled to a 3rd world country? i cant imagine they'd just have them laying about, do they have big store like walmart out their that use pallets to ship their goods?
@orbit789321 they do have a lot laying around at the ports (same as any other sea port) as most of the main shipping is done in these country's do not know if there would be enough for this sort of use thou

Building skills will develop if you have initiative, can do math and are willing to discuss with more experienced carpenters as to fastening techniques and materials.
@glenn6666 did you ever think of stuffing the pallets with compressed hay bales and just cobbing over it to make it a permant finished dwelling. smooth walls and some thermal mass? i see you just ran vertical beams and nailed them going up into big pallet sections. very nifty idea, im building an earthship shortly and need a place to sleep inside of while im building it
i have enough wood in my yard to build that style pallet construction and was going to pre fab a recycled house, make cement disk footings from a mold, and transport it in a huge uhaul truck. and assemble the whole thing and pack it with straw and clay.. ......a question for you sir, anything you would of done differently? roof wise, foundation, walls, anything?
Everything is subject to scrutiny in terms of opinion, but this pallet house, for its intended purpose, is a great idea. Of course it's beautiful, it's the model! So what if the ones used in the camps will be worse for wear? Torn, stained, thin, holed sheets for walls, or wooden walls? Last I checked synthetic fabrics were more flammable than wood too.
Neat idea, but I've never seen pallets that clean/new and it wouldn't work in Canada/Northern US/ anywhere with a cold winter without some serious consideration for windows, doors and insulation.

@novacrystalas they are brand new, special construction pallets. They don't get pallets from a warehouse to build with. When I was a kid, we used to steal pallets from a factory next to the woods, and build little clubhouses .
Well its very nice, but one problem..imagine rows and rows of these things side by side, you realize how easily wood pallets catch on fire? Looks like a real fire hazard. Merry Christmas all!

to all you haters ,,, i think that rubadux was trying to show the world that with a little imagination you can make something viable from discarded trash that has functionality. Why are all of you so critical?I think this is the kind of thinking that we need today. Besides,, its sure beats the raggedy tents that these refugees are usually found to reside in!
@grandmastermicochero people are projected into the comfort security zones called Close-gated communities. being scared prevents people from being creative and working with what they have. they work for what they want want want..but don't want to lift a finger. That's why Contractors are so saturated now, and most of them suck at building anything other than 'code'.
Do you by chance have the blue print for this design? I would like to recreate this at my own home in our garden. I think this is a wonderful idea. You are turning one man’s trash into another man’s treasure. Thanks
Well it's quite obvious that rubadux has resolved world hunger as well as refuge living conditions but is way too busy resolve world financial crisis to share his version of the pallet house with us. :-) There is no time for prototypes!!! The first version must work!!! :-D
If I was escaping violence, starvation, homelessness, disease, etc. and saw that I would be living in this shelter, instead of a tent, I would be thrilled. Regardless of its "efficiency" sometimes the feeling that you are living in something decent that you can call home is more important than having a highly efficient tent or cube house.
@rubadux That's a good point, but it's the thought that counts, right? In any case, it'd go up fairly fast, and it's more sturdy than a tent, much harder to steal than a tent, too!
@rubadux You have never been in the third world, have you? I have seen "permanent" walls made of plastic sheets, corn stalks, rice bags, anything and everything. While you whine and decree what others need, these people are doing something.
@jimmyleg5 of course I have -- and I know well what slums and camps look like. There's a difference between what people do with random stuff they can get hold of and what they would like to have. If you can deliver the right stuff, then do. Given the task of building a camp, only in a very desperate situation I'd throw a heap of corn stalks, plastic sheets, and junk in front of people and tell them, 'now go and build yourselves some nice little shacks'.
@rubadux shipping container.... thats what you just described. it woould be perfect. just open up the top and replace it with translucent panels and also make it so a breeze could blow through and keep it somewhat cool.
@mikeat88 in essence, I agree, and, as you mentioned, ventilation is crucial because shipping containers may easily turn into baking ovens in the glaring sun. One solution is a double roof and ample vents.
It is soooooo pretty however it seems rather impractical as a tiny home or a green house or a shed, but as an art project it is magnificent. I really love the overall design and esthetics. Also the builder displayed a very clever use of materials. It is a job well done despite that one flaw of the use of space.
Spoken like a true carpenter... I tend to agree with you. However, there are times when speed is what matters. Also, if the house were in a tropical zone the slats might be quite handy for cooling purposes. Many homes in tropical zones are completely open to the air but can then be closed in during heavy rains or winds. That would be the function of the plastic.
I wouldn't be so critical of this idea. I think it is very important to execute many small projects using all kinds of otherwise discarded materials and sharing those ideas with others. This how meaningful solutions are generated. Even better ideas can emerge from these small experiments. In disaster situations, materials, building expertise, and logistics can vary greatly. There can probably be no one single solution that works in all situations. Thank you for sharing this.
Once on a deployment to Yugoslavia, we stayed in small metal conex containers that were very secure, water tight, and comfortable. We didn't need a team of engineers to build them on-site, they just trucked them to the location and dropped them off. Can you imagine the small army of workers they'd need to assemble those pallet shacks for thousands of people? And most of the pallets I've seen are junk. Typical university types with big ideas and no common sense.
Why would they have to be quakeproof necessarily? Most refugees are there for either political reasons or famine or politically induced famine or just plain war, not earth quakes.
That's a pretty cool idea. And once put together would be a pretty sturdy house I would think especially if its made using the heavier pallets that use hard wood.
@rubadux Uh, as it said at the beginning, it's a "prototype", as in, not the completed project. I would assume if this is to be used in such a situation, a better alternative to plastic sheeting would be considered, perhaps locally sourced materials?
It's a shame that designers can't do their work without uppity engineers shitting on everything they do.
@teknotoast oh, well, so it is a 1:1 design study (model, or dummy), in which stage and case it is acceptable that it doesn't actually work, and not a prototype, which I think of as a structure that already works under realistic conditions. -- In my opinion, functionality supersedes cool in design. Have you ever seen elderly people struggling with a 70s handrail like this: prestigestairs . com/Images/crap.jpg ?
bad bad, is beautifull, but not funcional... how is the cost the new pallets? and only trained personnel could only build, so the cost is increased dramatically ... is a very bad emergency shelter
It can only be that sturdy when you put extra planks in between the gaps of the pallets to make it stronger. but other than that. the design can be quite affective if only in the hottest country where it hardly rains and no tornadoes either. but other than that. i like the innotive idea. shows you have great immagination and potential ideas.
@OurFadedGarden It depends on the shipment. Usually all "not so friendly " chemicals are transported on heavy duty skids or pallets. These are refundable because they are the "Cadillac" of the bunch. Most of the other ones are plain Jane and very cheap. The heavy duty ones are usually painted and have 3 times the weight of a cheap one.If you get a chance, compare an Oil pallet vs snow mobile. You would think the snow mobile would be top notch...Nope, because it is on a one trip only.
Hey that would make a really nice potting shed for my wife. Never thought of using old pallets like that. The design is kind of rustic so it would look right at home in her garden area. Thanks for sharing
Neat idea but the pallets I've worked with have I guess you could call it a shelf life that wouldn't allow for prolonged outdoor use. The wood dries, cracks, warps. and the nails loosen. Used pallets often come with unknown petro chemicals of some short and maybe dangerous.
Doesn't it toast your bread when guys like me always seem to have something negitive to say about ideas. I kind of think mass produced shelters shipped to the location would be better. Something designed for the purpose
@RCvolunteer1978 same thing as those folks screaming on camera for days on roofs after Katrina and same thing as will happen when the gulf plague slams folks hard enough to wake up. Luckily, I believe death will bring good times- so I just try to make things good where I can. Lol.
we built a pallet shed, came out really well actually...but the pallets were no where like those used in this project...cannibalised pallets to fix other pallets various sizes etc etc.
Cost of even the cheapest shed in the big DIY shops was about 120 pounds...
For the price of a couple of bags of nails, some felt for the roof...a scavenged door, scavenged window...we have a shed about 3 times the size of the one out of the diy store and imo stronger/better.
Nice idea & nice video. I have just one concern, fire! This would go up like a tinderbox. I still like it though!

@rubadux +1 like shipping containers.. ad it would be cheaper to ship and use less space AND be easier to build with normal ruff hewn lumber
HomeDistiller 4 months ago
@rubadux shipping container.... thats what you just described. it woould be perfect. just open up the top and replace it with translucent panels and also make it so a breeze could blow through and keep it somewhat cool.
mikeat88 4 months ago
@mikeat88 in essence, I agree, and, as you mentioned, ventilation is crucial because shipping containers may easily turn into baking ovens in the glaring sun. One solution is a double roof and ample vents.
rubadux 4 months ago
@mikeat88 - Or just wait until they go inside and just ship them to another country.

@rubadux the whole reasoning behind why shipping containers are being used, i agree totally. Make a nice fort or paintball cover for the kids haha

It is soooooo pretty however it seems rather impractical as a tiny home or a green house or a shed, but as an art project it is magnificent. I really love the overall design and esthetics. Also the builder displayed a very clever use of materials. It is a job well done despite that one flaw of the use of space.
MrAnthonyRizzo 5 months ago
Could have built a much more efficient and functional structure by disassembling the pallets and recycling the wood and nails...
caman5 5 months ago
@caman5
That would be the function of the plastic.

please have a look into earthbag construction much safer and only requires the bags a shovel and some barbed wire to secure one row to the other
fixt100 5 months ago

Typical university types with big ideas and no common sense.
coffeeexmachina 5 months ago
Why would they have to be quakeproof necessarily? Most refugees are there for either political reasons or famine or politically induced famine or just plain war, not earth quakes.

Beautiful! I'm going to stick one overmy use-less swimming pool :) Design goes exactly with design of my eco house. Thanks for this.
carriemaizey 6 months ago
That's a pretty cool idea. And once put together would be a pretty sturdy house I would think especially if its made using the heavier pallets that use hard wood.
wildbill23c 6 months ago
@rubadux Uh, as it said at the beginning, it's a "prototype", as in, not the completed project. I would assume if this is to be used in such a situation, a better alternative to plastic sheeting would be considered, perhaps locally sourced materials?
It's a shame that designers can't do their work without uppity engineers shitting on everything they do.
teknotoast 6 months ago 26
@teknotoast oh, well, so it is a 1:1 design study (model, or dummy), in which stage and case it is acceptable that it doesn't actually work, and not a prototype, which I think of as a structure that already works under realistic conditions. -- In my opinion, functionality supersedes cool in design. Have you ever seen elderly people struggling with a 70s handrail like this: prestigestairs . com/Images/crap.jpg ?

allen2688 8 months ago

Something designed for the purpose

we built a pallet shed, came out really well actually...but the pallets were no where like those used in this project...cannibalised pallets to fix other pallets various sizes etc etc.
Cost of even the cheapest shed in the big DIY shops was about 120 pounds...
For the price of a couple of bags of nails, some felt for the roof...a scavenged door, scavenged window...we have a shed about 3 times the size of the one out of the diy store and imo stronger/better.
