To get to the Olympics at all, I have to giver him a 10 for discipline. He gets another 10 for situational awareness. Just making the finals should be worth a 9 at the least. Let's just say he makes the most of his potential.
Anybody who says he didn't deserve to win the gold needs to read a bit about his history, He was a top competitive skater for ten years. He went to FOUR - count them 4 Olympics - you don't make it to 4 without damn hard work and being at the top of your sport. He had incredible bad luck during his career, he not only had his thigh sliced open during a World Cup event and losing 4 litres of blood but he also broke his neck in another accident in 2000 - 2 years before this. He is a legend
The skater is not bad but i wouldn't say that "the other skaters were going to fast and lost control" someone pushed someone and that guy fell into a person and he hit someone so on and so forth intil everyone fell except for the Bradbury.
We had to learn speaking about him in english class. Was so interesting when teacher explained how he won (I havent heard of him since that day) and i thought it should be interesting to look in youtube how he won. And bam! Amazing gold medal . Now hes my idol.
The best part is the slow motion replay of the finish where Bradbury is celebrating his victory, and the rest of the clowns are falling over themselves trying to get to the finish line.
A classic example of "luck" being 10 years of hard work and experience that led to being in the right place at the right time. So much like real life. Congratulations - Steven - your moment is immortalised in sport!
We have the same exact thing in the US, called 'World's Dumbest'. The themes are usually things like 'worlds dumbest daredevils/thrill seekers/record holder/criminals;/etc'
the biggest thing is that the judges had the authority to call for the race to be held again, a power that has been used in cases far less important than that race(i believe it might have even happened at those olympics, but i might be wrong). no race should be decided be under circumstances like that. he did not win the race, the one who knocked everyone else over lost it for them all.

How can an Aussie be proud of this guy? He won by a fluke, maybe he would have had bronze. His so called "strategy" was to wait in the back and hope people fall down. Wow, thats pathetic. Apollo deserved the gold.
@TichBalla Calm down. Aussie's are proud of him because it is a funny fluke. Its not his fault the others could not stay upright. Its funny because Aussies usually dont win shit in the winter olympics. get it? Aussie's are proud of this because we have a sense of humour..... It really kills the joke when ya have to explain it ... jeez
@TichBalla You don't just walk up and be like "yo i wana do this", guy trained for 10 years. Like they said in the beginning he was just happy to be there and knew he wasn't gonna win. So he just used the start of being consistent, while everyone else used the start of going as fast as they can because they got desperate. Sure maybe it's not the "perfect" win, but its just further proof the more calm person wins, turtle beats the hare type shit. Apollo deserved it, but he fucked up son!
@TichBalla Apollo disagrees with you and if you watched the race afterwards said that Bradbury deserved it more then himself. First person to cross a line wins a race. You cross 3rd for whatever reason then guess what? You've come third. Thats sport and thats life - go try it.
@Deshevelled Part of a channel 9 show, 20 to 1. They count down 20 to 1 of whatever topic and use commentary from Australian television presenters, sportsman etc. Thats kinda the basis of the show.
Wow, I was here in the stadium when this happened. It's sad that they didn't mention Apollo Anton Ono at all, because he was having such a spectacular day until he was dragged down by the Blue Guy from Korea (I think?). He was in outright position to win this race, and instead ended up needing stitches for a gash he suffered from the fall. He accepted the silver medal in a wheelchair . . .
I would just be happy to be in the finals too. It's easy to look at his performance and think thoughts like... 'he's not that good or something...' But he's still one of the best in the world and he earned the fuck out of his way there.
First of all, the guy is a legendary skater to start out with. (Try "mother fucking Olympic Speed Skating Finalist" legendary.) The guy at 1:15 get's it spot on. Just because he would have been last if the people in front of him hadn't fell, doesn't mean he doesn't deserve the medal. What a lot of people don't understand is these skaters aren't skating "as fast as they possibly can," because it's not smart to, because you'll fall. Steven Bradbury played it safe, and won. Period.
It's one of those cases of the tortoise vs the hair. The other guys messed up, and he didn't, plain and simple. In any race vent, if you fuck up in the lead, even if you lead the whole race, you lost. There's no re due for sissies. He might not have been the fastest, but he did win.
The guy who fell of course didn't deserve to win, but the thing is he knocked the other guys down and ruined their chances along with his.
watch the replay, there's at least one guy in the top three who gets knocked out by the moron trying to pass him going too fast. he would have lost, except for a fluke that was completely beyond his control. very unfair.
@Robstailey It's not unfair at all, it's competition. It happens. You have to account for that with the strategy you choose. Steven chose to follow the same strategy as what got him through the semi's due to the exact same occurrence, it turned out to be the right strategy to choose because he wasn't one of the fallers.
@S8587 I don't think it was so much luck as the fact that the other skaters got so competitive they neglected to take extra care at such high speed, especially in such a tight crowd of skaters on each side. When it comes down to it, even if it's not because of his speed, the Australian deserved the medal.
Everyone who said he was crap and was way behind the others: Steven has said himself that he hung back on purpose - it was his tactic in the heats and everyone fell so he decided to hang back again in the final in the hopes that it would happen again.
Tracy Grimshaw: "Clearly the guy can skate, right? I mean, he's ok"
No, he's only a skater that was part of the team that got Australia's first Winter Olympic medal back in 1994, and a skater that had been on the top 10 for 8 years.
Actually, the others didn't push too hard. Just one did and messed it up for the others. BTW they don't group in the last turn but the last lap. That is when they pick up speed and put their tactics into play to get to the front. So, the guy woudn't have had a chance from 1/4 of a lap behind every1 else (10ft or so from the finish line). That's all I meant. He made it to the final based on the mishap of the others as well. He is def one lucky guy. I like him. Don't care for the ppl in the vid.
These ppl are idiots. I could understand if he was in the group. The guy was way in the back. Plenty of ppl have won gold based on the accidents and mistakes of others but they were atleast in the running. To say this guy deserved it and is great because he stayed on his skates is plain ridiculous. The real winners are the ones that crashed and crawled to the finish line.
@Sagenergy We all know that. Steven questioned about himself not deserving to take the gold medal. But in regards to his 12 yrs of training and hardship he took the gold medal for that, not for the 90 seconds of that race. A very honest man.
@Sagenergy that was the final race (Gold Medal Event) he had already qualified and beaten others to be at that final race... everyone there are winners having made the final! he stuck to a speed he was comfortable with while the others pushed too hard and he won. simple enough
Apollo Ohno - the 3 time Gold Medalist, world champion and one who crawled across the line said himself Steven deserved it. Even HE said to finish first you first have to finish. Even in speed skating no one groups up until the last turn (where this happened) because the risk of this happening is huge. Wasn't the first time. Just the first in an Olympic final.
no, the real winner was the one who crossed the winning line first. It's as simple as that. What would you have wanted? That they give it to one of the ones who fell because he 'would've won if he hadn't'? How asinine! Would you accept Usain Bolt being given a gold medal without competing on the basis that 'He would win anyway'?
It's what makes these competitions so exciting: Anything can happen. I feel for the guys who fell but it's just one of those things.
