At the SR-71 in Pima Air & Space Museum (Tucson, AZ), there's a board with buttons that play the Blackbird's sounds while taxing, taking off, and what sounds very much like these sonic booms. Check FjDwozStv0w
wow I would have thought at 25,000m the sonic boom wouldn't be so loud on land. Hmm I guess there goes my idea of putting planes high up in the atmosphere to quiet the boom for civilian travel... However that must have really peeved the Russians to hear booms over their country and not be able to do anything about it. Revenge for Sputnik!
I just happen to have a front row seat on this subject. I just want to share with you that I have been in the hanger with this hot bird(kindly speaking) and also in the actual sr71 flight simulator (at dryden) that all space shuttle pilots have to take and pass.
All supersonic vehicles have double-boom, caused by a shock wave at nose of vehicle & one at tail. Two points generate shock wave cone extending to the ground, traveling at the same speed as the vehicle The shock waves move outward and rearward in all directions.- SR-71 Blackbird 107.4 feet long the distance if longer would make double boom more distinguishable.such as NASA Shuttle re-entry 2 booms.
I feel the true sound is awesome. I had the chance to hear it twice a day for more than 6 months je je je real sound is awesome and very large, if you're unprepared gives very afraid. My country was at war and it was normal the continued flight of these birds here in the 80's.
A friend of my family was a pilot of an SR-71, he said he was doin a mission and they fired a missile at him, so he did a highspeed climb, to 85,000 ft and outran the missile. He said he got back here and laughed.
Awesome. Thanks for the upload. I was always curious how they sounded at supersonic speed. I don't live far from the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center, in Hutchinson, KS. They have one in the main lobby as you walk in. It's a cool sight to see as you walk in. An amazing aircraft to see up close. Creepy too. I'm 32 yrs old and I still get goosebumps when I go there and see it as well as all the other attractions in the Space Center. If you're ever in the area you need to stop and check it out.
@DrunkenRuckus You are so right! The first time I ever saw a Blackbird up close was at the Air Force Armament Museum near Eglin AFB in Florida. I walked up and gently touched it and it was like going face to face with an alien spaceship. I still get goosebumps when I recall that. What an unreal aircraft. I can't even imagine what they have now that's being kept secret!
I was in HS in Palmdale CA when they did a Blackbird tribute flight. When it made a supersonic pass, I thought the windows would blow out. That plane is nothing short of impressive. If something like that was built today using modern technology, there is nothing that would stop it.
@pedrorehm The military doesn't want to say EXACTLY how fast it can go, but I'm pretty sure that it can actually hit more than 3,000MPH. The speed that we know is 2,700MPH, it's the fastest thing in existence.
i read the plane leaks fuel on the ground because the metal parts must be fitted loose because they expand from the very high heat caused by high speed.
@j0han1 You are correct my friend !!! I love the SR and know alot about it . The SR in high speed flight can be up to 12 inches longer than on the ground . After a high speen flight , The pilots could wait on the ground for up to 30 minutes before de-planing because the wing surfaces can reach temps of up to 800 degree's F !!! The fuel is special , you can put some in a can , throw a lit match in and the fuel will put it out !!!
megahorse1000 - because one of the birds went down on a classified surveillance mission some where over Korea but it leaked out and they stooped the project and retired all the remaining aircraft a few years after that.
@robertito514 Holy shit only if you knew how wrong that statement is the only blackbird to ever go down was was NASA shuttle that was carrying a scram-jet at Mach 3 80,000 feet up it failed the scram jet crashed into the blackbird thats it not 1 other blackbird has been downed and plus north Korea doesn't have the technology to build missiles that can go intercontinental nobody in the UN will sell to them and their SAMS are left over cold war USSR SAM systems they are not capable downing a bird.
the government probably still uses the SR-71 and if they do it must be high classification because why would they get rid of a recon plane that amazing
@megahorse1000 Really? you think they still use it? all known remaining SR-71 are in museums, non-functional, NASA still uses one to test instruments.
you would hear these all the time over sutter CA back in the day,a nice hot afternoon then one of these rumbles the windows as it crosses over the buttes(sutter butte range)
damn, they should still fly that bird, same with the concorde, who cares that boom when passin by, u just dont complain every time u hear a thunder, this sounds even more quiet than that
@tengoindiamike no it was back in the 70's and the x-15 has the record of manned flight at mach 6.7 and the h-tv2 has the fastest flight at mach 22 (witch all of these are American) (about 13,000 miles an hour)but the USA is probably hiding crazier things
@TigerMeet2142 Disturbances through the air can only move as fast as the speed of sound. When a plane is flying slower than sound, then the disturbances it makes have a chance to go ahead of it and "warn" the air to get out of the plane's way, resulting in no boom. When a plane breaks the speed of sound, the disturbances can't move faster than the plane does so the air in its way slams directly into the front of the plane and is forced violently away forming a shock, or "boom".
@TigerMeet2142 It's also possible, for example on jet airliners, for airflow over parts of the airplane to hit the speed of sound or go slightly supersonic while the majority of the airflow remains slower than the speed of sound. That will cause the airplane to sound noisier, both to passengers and to people on the ground.

The reason for the sonic booms in the mohve desert, is because its against the law to do it anyplace else over the us.
