I am studying hindi and hope I go to India soon. I have a lot of questions, for an example what clothes are best to wear for white people in India? I suppose Indians wouldn't like to see a white woman wearing sari? I am just curious to know the opinion of Indians not to believe every word I hear at the university. Many things told here are false.
@limpopo18 Have you gone there yet? You don't need to wear any Indian clothes there. In fact when I wear Indian clothes there I stand out more than if I were to wear jeans and a T-shirt. I recommend that you wear conservative western clothes though (meaning no tang tops, short tight skirts, sleeveless shirts or really tight clothes etc). People will be staring at you already you don't want any unwanted attention.
It depends on... Chandi Chowk is a lot more cheaper, on Connaught Place you find more "trendy" clothes but they are also much more (a lot!) expensive . If you want to by traditional indian clothes, like a sari, I recommend you go to Nai Sarak street close to Chandi Chowk. And use always when possible metro (subway) instead of ricksha, when you move between the different parts of the city. It is clean, cheap, fast and it's even air-conditioned! ; ) There are also tailors on Nai Sarak.
If you are a woman, remember, you can not walk alone on Nai Sarak. This is a rule. It is kind of a Muslim area... it is not safe to walk alone on that street alone as a woman and you don't go there in the evening if you are "white". In day time it is a very nice and cool street. The subay cost around 6 rupee from Connaught Place to Chandi Chowk.
