I notice you only have 2 layers, but start colouring the skin shades on the background layer, but the fill tool only covers the skin tones, not the others? Confused to how you're doing this? D:
not trying to be a dick but as i replied earlier there are better ways to create this effect. it may be more time consuming but the lines flow nicer if you use vector shapes and convert to paths. I prefer a mask which would give the shadows and highlights a much nicer flow. the lasso tool absolutely works, but the mask is the way to go. even if you end up deciding to not use the mask technique, it's a VITAL tool and skill to know. can NOT get a PS job if you don't know things like masks
@TheCynicalCircle if that works for you, then great. I know how to use masks, paths, etc. However, those are all a more complicated process than making a quick lasso selection and bucketing. Comic book production is all about getting a product out quick, that's the truth. You find the fastest way to do things, or you don't eat. Most people are going to look at a comic panel for maybe a minute at the most, everything doesn't need to be perfect.
@odysseyroc ," Most people are going to look at a comic panel for maybe a minute at the most, everything doesn't need to be perfect." Wow, what a bold statement to make. I may be wrong but people like Alex Ross, Marko Djurdjevic, and Skottie Young may disagree with that statement. I bought Kindom Come for the artwork not the story line, I fell in love with and studied every panel that Ross painted perfectly. I do the same with Mr. Young's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Marko's work speaks 4 itself.
@spacepine perfection is never an appropriate word to describe art, a computer program could be perfect, a math equation can be perfect, but art can't be perfect, if it's perfected, then it's science.
@thesocialinception There is nothing perfect about science. In fact, science is the least perfected areas of human endeavor. So unless you're after an abstract definition, as in "he had it down to a science", then perfected and science should never be linked.
Hey man, This is really really great. Been looking around for this forever. Thanks. One quick question: how do you determine what shapes you make your lasso in? Is it just looking at other comic books or photo references or just experience?
@lex3901 Lolzies. I have one, but I was talking bout like, making it look like it's drawn with a brush. Literally. Like those traditional Chinese calligraphy!
@Loopey111111 there are free brushes you can download from some sites. there are sites that you can have a paid membership to and thye have brushes available to members. try searching google for downloadable PS burshes. I download all mine through torrents. not always legal. but it's by far the best way. you can find lighning, splatter, clouds, distressed, and ofcourse brushes strokes.
@TheCynicalCircle Ah yeahh, I usually dl too, but just from like, sites. Never tried torrenting. But I'll take a look, didn't know they had those though.
@Loopey111111 try demonoid. it can be tough to get a membership to demonoid, but that is by far the best and most reliable torrent site out there. the community is really good and they cut down on the bullshit. scrapetorrent is ok as well. thats more of a search engine compiling results from many other torrent sites. no membership needed. demonoid is better for finding brushes. you also could create your own brush. there are tutorials for that. but it'll take time and won't come out the same
question: the first selection you made with the lasso, it went over the edges of the face, you added the color but the color only went on the face...how did you do that? i mean why didn't the color get on the hair, or the black color(her face line)
@zehaha Its because the hair is a diffrent layer etc. and you can lock action depending on layers. Exsample:
You want to draw layer 1 and not layer 2. You select layer 1 and lock it to this then everything thats on the layer will be drawn on... but nothing will be altered thats not on this layer. I hope that helps... even though i dont excactly know what he was doing.
I don't understand how you are filling your selections without filing in everything else in your selection. For example, when filling in the highlights on the face, your selection goes into the hair and the eyes and the ink but when you fill it only fills in the skin. How are you doing this?
Why did u have to change her skin :/

Can you please tell me how you switch back and forth from the freehand lasso to the angular lasso while you're still in the middle of tracing a path?
