I´m pretty sure Edgar Rice got a time machine and is messing up our memories... in a short while people will say that the concept of ipad was originally invented by him in 1918!
Personally I'm glad that the books are finally getting the attention they deserved after all these years. They literally laid the groundwork for most of the sci-fi epics we have now. I remember reading the entire John Carter of Mars series when I was ten and has remained one of my favorite series of all time. Yes, the plots were formulaic and in some ways repetitive (girl gets captured, hero rescues, hero gets captured, repeat) but still amazing. And the tharks look fantastic.

As a collector of ERB novels for 58 years, I look forward to this film. The trailer looks like it can be the start of a franchise. It may not be exactly like the written word, but then, what novel to film is. Learn more about "John Carter" from the Burroughs Bibliophiles. Check out their website.

I´m pretty sure Edgar Rice got a time machine and is messing up our memories... in a short while people will say that the concept of ipad was originally invented by him in 1918!
soon as i saw DISNEY i don't think this movie will be as cool as i think it will be... as in it, its probably gonna be childish for its type of movie, though i love disney movies
I see "Tim Riggins" is getting more movies ... good for him. Dunno how this will be ... and Wolverine was a pretty poorly put together movie but hopefully this does well.
@NarwhalJedi Disney had standards, high ones, especially with their animated films. It's just that they lowered it to fit the deteriorating quality of society today, who would buy almost anything.
Action hero-check. Obligatory action female who's supposedly badass, but somehow has more clothes off scenes than anything else scenes - check. Already knowing the whole movie storyline and ending before the trailer has even finished - check.
As one who has recently found out about the books and the comics, I'm extremely interested in this film. I can see how someone who isn't familiar wouldn't find it appealing though. The thing is that many of the creatures described in the books simply wouldn't look good without CGI.
Just so we're clear, this is based on a book, Princes of Mars, By Edgar Rice Buroughs, (Wrote tarzan as well). Princess of mars was written In 1917; WAY BEFORE Star Wars or Avatar was even thought of. this book was probably influential on Many a science Fiction film. Full Circle Biznatch :D
why don't you all just shut up these were books from when my grandfather grew up and he gave to me to read and ive read them none of you understand what its about because you haven't read them you should go read them before you say ooh another movie about aliens and im personally taking him to see this movie march 9th
Looks like Disney, once again, trying to rake in money with a CGI overdose in a cliche and weak script that probably won't meet up to the standards Disney once had.
@alexis2kool Due to Mars having less of a gravitational pull,(aka 1900's science knew nothing about Mars), John carter is able to jump higher, run faster, etc.
@poshman007 dude, I know so many people that would kick oyur ass for saying that . . . even though you arent that far off
seriously, Dejah Thoris does jack shit in the original books and still has more depth than Bella Swan
the romance in the books get gushy like twilight, but then a man gets mauled by space rats and hte main character beats the fuck out of a bunch of people
there is serious violence and awesome happening in these stories, that twilight coudnt match
*sigh* I think disney should stop buying rights to properties that would make good movies. I would be more optomistic if it was anyone but disney. I don't trust them after Prince of Persia....
@EPICconvention You're letting one movie dictate how you feel about other movies? That's silly. More what it seems, this movie looks pretty faithful to source material aside for a few differences.
@TEKITOcreations Not just that movie; when I think about Disney's track record with other movies that were live-action ,(regardless of whether they were based on a book or game),it hasn't been that great In my opinion (but i'll give an exception to the first pirates of the carribean; maybe i've forgotten a movie or two, it's possible). I think part of the problem is that Disney's target demographic is children/families. You're right though; It doesn't look like they've gone astray from the book.
I feel this will be another big money loss for Disney, because more and more their movies are becoming flat and have no soul, all the special effects in the world will not save them.
@hardBoss Pirates of the Carribean, tangled, the Muppets are all great movies. Yes, there are some bad Disney movie, but big whoop, not all of the can be great. You act everthing Disney use to make was classics. This movie is being worked on my the writers and director of Pixar movies such as Wall-E and Toy Story, so I believe the have ton of heart and soul. And of course this movie has a lot of special effects. It takes place on mars and has weird looking aliens.
Not fair. They used Kashmir, and everything sounds epic when put to Led Zeppelin. It's like putting music to AC/DC, you know it'll look awesome no matter what.
Movie looks okay, though that arena scene with the monsters looks remarkably similar to Star wars episode 2. The acting looks utterly atrocious, with inexplicable british accents once again, because apparently they make people sound sophisticated. Mark Strong seems wasted here. Too bad, the director is great, he should have cast better people and made up an accent for "Mars" people.
@GentryJ20 From what I've gathered, the arena scene is in the original novel (I could be wrong, I haven't read the books). Those books have had a BIG influence on sci-fi, so it's very possible the the arena scene in Episode II was inspired by it. The acting also seems fine to me. Having a problem with characters have British accents here is kind of silly. Instead of having a different accent, they should have an entirely new language considering that they are on a different planet.
@GentryJ20 And you can't make up an accent. There are so many different variations of different accents in the world, that whatever accent they come up with in the movie will end up sounding like some kind of accent we already know Earth. If you don't have a problem with aliens from another planet being able to speak english, a language invented on Earth, you should have no problem with what accent they have. And Mark strong hasn't even said a word yet, so we can't say anything about him.
@TEKITOcreations I understand the book was written before Star Wars, but I think they should have deviated from the source material to give the audience something that hasnt been seen in cinema before. As for the proposed martian language, I can only assume that it was disney who decided against it, because I know Andrew Stanton is a competent director who probably would have devised one. The british accents are annoying because they're seemingly ubiquitous these days for new, mysterious people
@GentryJ20 Correct if I'm wrong, maybe you read the books, but from my knowledge, the martians in the book spoke English. I assume that because no one else has complained about that in these previews. If that's the case, then you assuming Disney made the director have them speak English is silly. Hell, half of of the movie Wall-E (which was directed by the same person as this movie had no dialogue and it was a huge success. If the director wanted a new language, he would have done.
If this fails at the box office, it will in large part be because of the name. Unless you've read the books, "John Carter" means nothing. "A Princess of Mars" would have been at least somewhat interesting to the general public. Very stupid move Disney.
@0xfded How will that affect the box office in anyway? If a person has read the books, they'll know who John Carter is since he's the main character (at least in the first 3 books) and they can easily see that the movie is based on A Princess of Mars. And people don't give a crap about movie names, they see a movie based on the content of the previews. If they don't like the name, then they just don't the name, and it goes no farmer than that.
@Ralokone No, I was refering to the Blue Creature Avatar...because he was covered in the blue blood... but this does look like the last airbender too.
@Ralokone The only thing I was saying it that he looks like a(n) Avatar because he was blue....Like the one ones in the movie Avatar by James Cameron...and not the last airbender.
