I remember reading the entire John Carter of Mars series when I was ten and has remained one of my favorite series of all time. Yes, the plots were formulaic and in some ways repetitive (girl gets captured, hero rescues, hero gets captured, repeat) but still amazing. And the tharks look fantastic.

As one who has recently found out about the books and the comics, I'm extremely interested in this film. I can see how someone who isn't familiar wouldn't find it appealing though. The thing is that many of the creatures described in the books simply wouldn't look good without CGI.

Just so we're clear, this is based on a book, Princes of Mars, By Edgar Rice Buroughs, (Wrote tarzan as well). Princess of mars was written In 1917; WAY BEFORE Star Wars or Avatar was even thought of. this book was probably influential on Many a science Fiction film. Full Circle Biznatch :D

I think part of the problem is that Disney's target demographic is children/families. You're right though; It doesn't look like they've gone astray from the book.

You act everthing Disney use to make was classics. This movie is being worked on my the writers and director of Pixar movies such as Wall-E and Toy Story, so I believe the have ton of heart and soul. And of course this movie has a lot of special effects. It takes place on mars and has weird looking aliens.

Movie looks okay, though that arena scene with the monsters looks remarkably similar to Star wars episode 2. The acting looks utterly atrocious, with inexplicable british accents once again, because apparently they make people sound sophisticated. Mark Strong seems wasted here. Too bad, the director is great, he should have cast better people and made up an accent for "Mars" people.

@GentryJ20 From what I've gathered, the arena scene is in the original novel (I could be wrong, I haven't read the books). Those books have had a BIG influence on sci-fi, so it's very possible the the arena scene in Episode II was inspired by it. The acting also seems fine to me. Having a problem with characters have British accents here is kind of silly. Instead of having a different accent, they should have an entirely new language considering that they are on a different planet.

There are so many different variations of different accents in the world, that whatever accent they come up with in the movie will end up sounding like some kind of accent we already know Earth. If you don't have a problem with aliens from another planet being able to speak english, a language invented on Earth, you should have no problem with what accent they have. And Mark strong hasn't even said a word yet, so we can't say anything about him.

As for the proposed martian language, I can only assume that it was disney who decided against it, because I know Andrew Stanton is a competent director who probably would have devised one. I assume that because no one else has complained about that in these previews. If that's the case, then you assuming Disney made the director have them speak English is silly.
