  • This guy's voice is similiar with geoff tate. Great Vocal

  • If 'ryche ever decide to begin making good music again, they should fire Tate and hire this guy.

  • Hi Rob, I'm a male with a fairly low based voice.I'm having a problem with my transition point, I've been been doing lip rolls and now I can do a passagio but I'm changing register at Bflat4 which is way to low, but when I get up to an E4 I'm straining like hell so i can't change register near there. Also, even when I get into a middle/low head voice, If I put power on it, I get loads of vocal fry on it.

I live in england so I can't see your for lessons, so have you any advice?

    Thanks

  • @MissusMetalFace You simply need to learn how to stop belting so high... thats the start. Then you need to rebuild the head voice with the TVS techniques. Once you learn the techniques and then get after your training, you will begin to bridge nicely beyond E4 and have no strain what so ever. Really, you can do it, it just takes training and practice. Purchase a copy of "The Four Pillars of Singing" 2.0 and train with me over the internet. I have a lot of internet students from the UK.

  • That was really good. Tomorrow when I can get loud I'll have to see if I'm really as good as I think I am on this song or if I'm in falsetto and I'm deluding myself!

Wait a minute! 425 area code! You are in the Seattle area? Oh wait, I'm unemployed and broke, so nevermind! :) Where are you guys located??

  • @StratMatt777 Yes, we are located in Seattle, WA USA... go check out the web site.

  • That kid rocked. In 35 years I have heard nothing that sounded like Geoff Tate, and he was close. Very cool

  • Great support...nice..

  • Dude, you are awesome. I couldn't do this song even if I tried. You rock!

  • Great job!!! Are you in a band?

  • This guy's got the Geoff Tate voice totally happening! LOL! Awesome.

  • Although I'm not a fan of his tone, clearly he knows how to sing. I encourage anyone able, to take lessons from him.

  • It's kinda sad he didn't hit the notes on time. Is almost as if he did it on purpose.

  • Are there other videos with Randy Loran? I'm just trippin here at his ability.

  • Wow I just now saw this. Pretty amazing vocals man. You should really sing professionally with a very good band. Color me WAY impressed!

  • Total Respect... Fuckin' awesome, powerful, with lots of emotions and character, THE POWER!!!!

  • is it ALL HEAD VOICE or you mix up your Chest voice? thanks, begging for the responce because it is not clear to me

  • This is all head voice... this is what we train singers to do.

  • @roblunte is his beginning stanza is also a head voice or it's chest voice? Thanks again

  • @DDPWcawLeague You have to give me time stamps, I dont know what you mean by "stanza".

  • @roblunte - stanza = verse

  • @roblunte sorry, I mean his first lyrics of the song, the low tone voice.. Thanks in advance.

  • @DDPWcawLeague No. The low voice is his chest voice... men do not sing into their head voice until approximately E4.

  • @roblunte - where men start to blend into head is subjective and can vary slightly based on the speaking voice of the individual person and their technique.

A male singer with a high speaking voice will enter head voice much higher than someone with a lower voice. The average male voice (baritone) enters head voice somewhere between Eb4-F4.

  • @RocktheStageNYC I disagree Kevin. Where men begin to bridge into the head voice is not subjective and should not be if the goal is to help people learn how to bridge consistently. It is true you can bridge at slightly different points, give or take a half or whole step, but the general rule at TVS is E4 for men and Bb4 for women.

The general pitch of someone's speaking voice has little to do with the rule of what note the voice begins to bridge on.

  • Great voice, just work on the vibrato.

  • Every time I watched this video, I get inspired to practice more and more.

  • Tate was much much muchhhhh better. But great job, by the way.

  • Brilliantly done!!

  • Phlarangeal or what ever.

  • YOU NAILED IT !!!! Beautiful job sir! I'm just starting vocal practice and one of my goals is to reach high tenor like Geoff Tate. I know i can never sound exactly like him, but it's a goal nonetheless. Question. Will age be a factor in determining vocal range i.e if you are older than your mid 30's or so?

  • No, actually, your voice is in its prime when you get into your 30s & 40s... thats when your at your best.

  • Thats right Josh... this is NOT falsetto folks. Falsetto is NOT a place.. its not a vocal register, it is a vocal mode... its more related to laryngeal physiology and the resulting tone you get from it... it is not "where high notes are produced"... the register is referred to "Head Voice"... Head voice and Falsetto are NOT the same thing! Some people think it is and even worse, some teachers teach that it is... wrong.

Anyways, I can show you guys how to do this... get in touch with me.

  • You breath in with your diaphragm, you don't sing from your diaphragm (although you might be able to use it to slow down the air thats going out). Enough with the over used word "diaphragm."

  • I also note from their comments here that 'ImaWestEndBaby' is a complete retard when it comes to the technicalities of singing - I hope they're not teaching anybody. So many unqualified people just setting up these days, it's a disgrace!

  • "Imawestendbaby" is notorious for ripping on people. He is the worst on YouTube. Rips on other teachers too. I think it could be someone I unfortunately know, that teaches in the UK and has a seat as a consultant on the British Voice Association, believe it or not... jealousy and petty bitterness is what this person is all about.

  • Take Hooooold... Meow?

  • What is "Falsetto Yelling"? What is "diaphram singing"? I look forward to learning more about your interesting voice pedagogy.

  • To InfinitySquared79....are fn kiddin me?? This dude is a beast !!! Geoff can't even sing it this good anymore. This dude just took me back to 1985 when i saw Geoff sing it this good opening fo KISS.....STANDING OVATION MAN!! U ROCK !!! U WOULD MAKE GEOFF PROUD!

  • @JescobarWR80 To be honest I would looooooove to know what Geoff would think of it. I think in the end his is the only opinion that would really matter. I mostly did this for myself because I really enjoy the dynamic and range of the song and found it a huge challenge. I never thought so many people would have an opinion LOL. Thanks for the complement my friend I appreciate it.

  • @vocals27 That's what really matters. Have you noticed that's the best way for people to connect? Otherwise where is the humanity to share?

  • awesome, i wanna learn to sing , thats badass, everyonewants to be a guitar player or a drummer, but not too much people ever think of learning how to sing,

  • I sing this song live with my band last week it was bad ass i pulled it off great almost puked thou lol,

  • awesome, you hit all the high notes, it would sound better with falsetto though, but still amazing :)

  • Thanks, but this statement makes no sense what so ever. "It would sound better in falsetto"? It clear that you are confused on what falsetto is. Its not a place, its a tone. Its a vocal mode that produces a breathy, feminine-like overtone. You sing full voice and falsetto both in the head voice. Randy is singing full head tones and it sounds killer. If he were to sing it in falsetto, it would sound like ass. Read my article, "Falsetto and head voice are not the same thing". Your confused.

  • Ohh thanks for clearing that out. So how do you do head voice instead of Chest voice or falsetto. Imitating the Bee gees is easy but imitating Full Tone power on those first A and E before the Drums explode is not easy. Thank You and Happy New Year!!

  • That is a critical question and fundamental to what we do at TVs. Come train with me and Ill show you how... thats the "trick"!

  • I dont know much, but I know when I sing in falsetto, its a compromise...not what you want, so falsetto could not be better.

  • Not sure I understand your point, because this is NOT Falsetto... but thanks for your comment anyways?

  • I was responding to someone else I think. I need to check out your program sometime. I've been finding new range in my singing and I have no explanation for it. It's also weird how the more you sing, the better choices you make in terms of melody. People have always liked my lower range but balked when I got higher and louder. Can your program improve timbre as well as range, or all we all stuck with whatever range our voice sounds its best at?

  • er, why would it? :\

Geoff NEVER sung falcetto. it was all natural

  • This is not Falsetto my friend, (BTW... Falsetto is spelled with an "S"). Falsetto is not head voice. Falsetto is a vocal mode, a tone characterized, among other things, by a windy sound and an open glottis. This is Belted/Twang in the head voice and it is precisely how Geoff Tate sings this song.

Your confused about "Falsetto vs Head Voice", a very common mistake and misunderstanding.

  • no, i wasn't responding to you, i was responding to the guy who said it would've sounded better with Falsetto. I'm a musician, I know the difference between Falsetto and Head Voice.

  • Ok, ok... good.

  • @roblunte So do opera countertenors use head voice or falsetto?

  • holy crap that was great you sound geoff tate thats great

  • Dude, you smoked those vocals, nice job! :)

  • Nice effort, admirable...I'm sure if you've listened to this a few times though, you can hear where the rough spots are.

  • Great !!!!!!!

  • HOLY SHIT this guy nailed the vocals man!! I've seen Queensryche live a few times back in the day and they were amazing...especially Geoff Tate. This is the closest thing I've ever heard to Tate's voice!! THUMBS WAY UP & 5 STARS MAN!!

  • Very nice dood

  • How can I be that good in singing?

  • holy crap, this is impressive. Blows pretty much any modern rock singers away. Kinda sad when the camera panned out to an empty audience

  • Randy has nice teeth..

  • AMAZING!!!best version of this song on youtube aside from queensryches of course but...AMAZING!!!

  • WOW

  • I recommend the TC-Helicon Create pedal for effects before the VoiceLive and you should also check out the Digitech Vocalist... they are awesome!

  • Damn man, I wish I had a voice like that for my GF. Oh well, I guess I can fall back on my guitar skills, but damn man, man, your voice is fucking awesome.

  • oh and no one will read what i said because the author approves the posts. bollox

  • Really? I decided to approve this one... the one I deleted was so ignorant and rude its not worthy of those that have productive things to share...

  • Man...!!!Wat power..!! dis man can sing like hell..!!

Long live vocalist studio..long live Rock Music..\m/\m/

I wish i could sing Queensryche songs 2...

  • funny.

  • i think you'll find that "the whole world" would agree that this style is something that should be lost with the 80's itself.

  • Pete... you dont "get it". Hey folks, this btw... is the like the 5th comment Pete has sent me that insults TVS. For what ever reason, Pete seems to be bitter about something and this video seems to make him lash out at TVS and Randy, who btw, we all agree has provided an amazing performance here my little friend. When you go to Pete's page you see a 15 year old singing in his pink pajamas in his little garage band... with no audio. Your a dork, go play in the street dude!

  • SLS: hayley williams

    TVS: this guy

    SLS: 1 TVS: 0

what the fuck is this squeaky pile of shit doing....

  • Im actually going to approve this post so the entire world can see your ignorance.

  • Hey Pete, just go play your XBox or whatever because you are painfully young and ignorant. Hayley Williams? What are you - 15yrs old? C'mon dude/ Tate is a metal singer (or was) and Hayley is a pop singer. Its like comparing Pavarotti to Dean Martin. I think Hayley Williams would even disagree with you. You're obviously a YouTube troll so take Robert's advice and go play in traffic.

  • A little distortion on the mic, and your voice went out for a microsecond. But that was virtualy flawless. You hit the massive first high note (a little longer than the original) wich is extremely difficult, and even Mr. Tate doesn't do it live anymore (I still remember when he used to...UNREAL!).

Excellent performance, a classic song and you did it justice. Now that I've seen this I shall return to watch crappy singers on TV (thanks a lot).

  • This guy is outstanding, but the sound is aweful. I realize this is Youtube, but man, the backing track is being side changed compressed to the vocal track, and it's pumping like crazy and really taking away from the vocal performance. This cat should know that.

That being said. He is truely awesome...

  • If you would like to provide some funding for two HD camera and sound crew get in touch with TVS.

  • .. Wow... is all I can say.. WOW!

  • Great signing dude!!!

  • I wish i had ur voice dude...great job!!!

  • nobody can replace geoff tate but man you did an excellent job doing a cover of this song specially since geoff has a classical trained voice props props props youra BEAST

  • Geoff would be VERY PROUD!!!!!!

  • Very nice!!!! Geoff would be proud

  • woah was Geoff voice this high in the early years i love this but its a bit thin sounding to me ...it doesnt have the fullness of geoff's voice. But i still love it nonetheless

  • The greatest metal vocal performance of all time in my opinion. Get a copy of "The Warning" from Queensryche...

  • "The Warning" should be a required purchase for all would be metal and hard rock singers. Along with"Number of the Beast" from Iron Maiden and "Screaming for Vengeance" from Judas Priest. They are ALL "Tour De Force" vocal displays.

  • Cool post... Sometimes I wonder if I'd swap out Number Of The Beast with Piece Of Mind... I can't decide which is the more amazing Bruce Dickinson performance.

  • Both albums are Bruce's top vocal performances in my opinion.. but "Piece of Mind" is the stronger of the two.

  • Geoff Tate had zero fullness in his upper register. It was all head voice with a touch of reinforced falsetto. His chest voice was beefy but once he went past a C4 he thinned out a lot. Randy hear has a bit more power in those upper notes tand a little more twang than Geoff. "Brighter" so to speak. Excellent demonstration of bridging.

  • Holy shit!~ Amazing overall vocal tone. Wow.

Not many sound as good in the lower register, reaching such high places. Thnks

  • hey

  • Not bad chief not bad.

    Mitch

  • amazing

  • It's all falsetto or head voice??

  • Its full voice in the head voice. what makes it not falsetto is "vocal fold adduction" or "vocal fold closure", assisted by contractions of the aryepiglottic sphincter & thyroid tilt... we can train you how to do this with our training system. Check out the web site.

  • great

  • Much better than I could do. Good job!

  • awesome...even tate doesn't do that scream at 1:30 into the song live anymore..good job

  • sometimes he does, last year when i saw QR, they didn't to the keyed down version. he can still hit'em, just not for a whole tour, (i'm guessing)

  • Keep working on moving into your head voice. Almost there dude, alomst there. That has got to be the hardest thing for a rock singer to do. You do it better than most including me. Keep up the work and we will see you out there.

  • this song isnt easy to sing ..Geoff's vocal range was insaine during the early years of Queensryche ..he still has the voice but he needs to train his voice as constant touring and smoking has diminished his vocal range somewhat ..

  • Well put, "phoenix".

  • Well put Phoenix...

  • stellar job man!!

some of the comments crack me up, some people just don't get it!!

if i could one tenth as well as you i be one happer camper!! btw, i sing that song WAY better than you!! (as long as my stereo is loud enough that i can't hear myself!!)

  • I know... some people just dont "get it"... maybe if they actually tried to sing this song, they would...

  • Please comments with balance this guy is going in the correct way how can somebody here can put him to compare to Tate?? why?? he is good and if he wants improve himself he got potencial to do it, go ahead man, here another heavy singer Martin Makslewicz from argentina living in Miami Dream Theater Fan.

  • Sorry, he is a good singer but his voice didn't even come close to Tate's. This is another proove that Geoff Tate is still THE best rock singer today. Noone is able reach his level!

BTW, this guy would fit in Dream Theater. He's not better then LaBrie but he comes close.

  • Randy ids NOT trying to compete with Geoff Tate. This is a tribute. however, in my qualified opinion, this is so damn close to Geoff Tate on a good day, its spooky. I dont think Randy has much to stay awake at night about. its not about reaching someone else's "level", its about reaching your own personal level of excellence. Everyone has a unique "finger print" in thier voice... Randy or any vocalist will always sound thier best in thier OWN music. Dig?

  • Hmmm, that's an awesome vid, he does really well! I actually do think that he is somewhat similar to Tate, great job!

Is there any kind of voice coaching of this kind in Norway? You know, preferably near to the capital. All the coaches do classical, which is good, of course, I learned so much from my old teacher, but I'm looking for something more in this direction! Developing range, head voice etc...

  • Not like what we do at TVS... I would reccomend that you purchase our DVD training system on the web site... and we offer web cam lessons as well. why dont you email me from the web site and I can talk to you about technique.

  • Hmm, maybe I should look in to that!

  • Holy shit! This dude could be Geoff Tate's twin! Damn good vocals!!!

  • Mmh... a question... does he use only head voice or also falsetto? Is he a tenor or a baritone?

  • Only a question... is it a head voice or a falsetto poggiato?? :O

  • Absolutely AWESOME! Looks like you guys do a great job at the studio, I cant wait to look into the program further!

  • just go to the web site... there is a great video training system. Look for " The Four Pillars of Screaming!". and we offer real-time internet lessons. hope to work with you.

  • wow,outstanding.

i tried this song, but lack the air in my lungs to hold the notes,(im a smoker).

  • It requires strong respiratory velocity AND a trained ability to adduct the vocal folds in the lower head voice regions... something we specialize in at TVS.

  • oh this sucks! hehe just kidding, you're great man!

  • seriously impressive, geoff tate is the master

  • Yes, the voice instructor for Geoff Tate, Ann Wilson and Layne Staley... and myself was a gentleman named Maestro David Kyle... the studio is in Seattle.

This vocalist is Randy Loran, a "Screaming Pillar" in our studio and future tvs voice instructor.

    go to thevocaliststudio "dot" com

    Hope to hear from you.

  • Kudos to Randy! Robert, OMG, in my opinion Geoff Tate and Ann Wilson are the 2 most talented male & female rock vocalists alive, & the singers whose styles I have alwaya spired to emulate. I had no clue that they were trained by the same Maestro. That makes sense.

  • Robert, I had a good voice at one time (could sing anything in Ann Wilson's or Pat Benatar's range) but my vocal chords were damaged after an auto accident, when I was intubated. The same thing happened to the singer from Sweetwater (the first band to play at Woodstock). I understand that there are voice exercises to build my strength and range back. It took years, but she built hers back. What would you recommend?

  • Contact me and lets discuss on email or on the phone... I would like to help you.

    Robert

  • Holy CRAP!!! This is &^*%ing amazing!!!
