Hepburn was a pioneer of the Emphatic Resonance acting technique without even knowing it. It is so easy to become so invested in her characters as if we were watching living people, as is most evident in this, one of her most powerful scenes.
When I think of GREAT Golden Hollywood classics....this has to be top on my list. The ensemble was first rate...the acting superb...and the clothes were classic. I just got it from NetFlicks and saw it over last weekend. I tried to copy it to my computer but it wouldn't take : (=. I will have to actually buy it I love it that much. I would also recomment Alice Adams (if you are into watching classic disfunctional families and watch them in all their 1930's glory). All About Eve is another.
James Cagney never said "You dirty rat!", Cary Grant never exclaimed "Judy ! Judy ! Judy !" but Katharine Hepburn DID actually say "The calla lilies are in bloom again..." Epic!
I watched an episode of I Love Lucy- Lucy is on a train and says the calla lilly line. I thought omg!! I know that line! I'm so glad you posted it on here, I didn't even have to try hard to find it.. the little things in life make me so giddy d:)
I saw the full movie and the performance last Friday. I asked the director why it was so different, and she said, "Because the play is so anti-Hollywood. Hollywood wouldn't put on an anti-Hollywood movie."
But what a great movie! I love how they talk so fast!
the director sounds like he doesn't know what he's talking about....
the movie came first. it's different because the writer attempted to give it a somewhat different plot, yet the stage version pails in comparison to the movie.
really? the play came second? Hm... do you think you could site this? I mean, I'm just extensively curious. My director (she's a girl) was very confident in her words and has always been very researched. Can you just reply with a link? Thanks!
Your video is great and I've given you 5 stars. Please check out my latest clip of 1930's movie icon trading cards when you have time: Ginger Rogers, Heather Angel, Shirley Temple, Clark Gable, Greta Garbo, Joan Crawford, Katharine Hepburn...and lots more.
I'm playing Terry in the play for my high school! CAN'T WAIT.

What a combination of female talent. Hepburn, Rogers, Ball...but none won the Oscar in 1937.

Real actors. Real writing. Real film making. Not the utter tripe of today. At least we have the past.
And Katharine Hepburn truly knew her Art "from the ground up."

In some respects, this movie is better than All About Eve, and with a kick-ass female ensemble to boot!
