In Canada we have gun control and stick-ups like this (and murders) do not occur as often as in the US, where there are too many guns. Where there are guns people will use them irresponsibly. The solution is to ban them or at least limit their number.

Mike is stupefyingly wrong. A "well regulated militia" does not mean "regulated" as in the government regulating firearms or militias. The neo-liberal interpretation of the word "regulated" is false. "Regulated" in the time of the constitution's signing meant: "To adjust to a particular specification or requirement. To adjust (a mechanism) for accurate and proper functioning." Guns are just a tool like any other. The majority of criminal acts using guns are illegally obtained firearms. It's akin to how people use drugs despite of the legality of them. Here in Canada we have gun control. I am licensed to have handguns, I have to be a member of a gun club and I am only permitted to take the handguns to the gun club (in locked box etc) We do not accept the thought that guns are needed for protection, and we do not have gun violence in any amount. We are also not denied the PRIVILEGE if we take the necessary steps to get licensed and show a recreational purpose. Makes sense and it works.

Another way to frame is question is 'if for every accidental death, one life is saved, is it worth it?', and from there decide, personally, where the line is.

If a guy with a knife walks into a house intending to kill a family of 4, but is shot dead instead, thats 4 lives saved (or three if you offset the death of the badguy. Same with if he kills 1 before dying, or kills 2 or 3, or is just wounded severely enough to not be able to function.

Without Edith's character, AITF doesn't work. The constant bickering between Archie and Meathead would make the show too harsh. Edith's sweetness takes the edge off of Archie's harshness and Meathead's know-it-all college boy opinions. Gloria, while necessary to keep Meathead in the picture, adds nothing to the show.

Here in Canada we have gun control. I am licensed to have handguns, I have to be a member of a gun club and I am only permitted to take the handguns to the gun club (in locked box etc) We do not accept the thought that guns are needed for protection, and we do not have gun violence in any amount. We are also not denied the PRIVILEGE if we take the necessary steps to get licensed and show a recreational purpose. Makes sense and it works.

The reason that amendment is in there in the first place was to ensure that the ordinary citizens would have the ability to overthrow the government by force should it ever become oppressive or tyrannical. That's irrelevant now in the age of WMDs. It's not there so a bunch of trailer trash can have a substitute for their tiny little weewees hanging on the back of their pick up trucks.

@smartypantsnyc Until there is a metric that can determine how many lives are saved by the use of deadly force (and despite there being stats out there - that are very positive btw, I don't think this is possible), we cannot determine what net effect the use of firearms has on society. Another way to frame is question is 'if for every accidental death, one life is saved, is it worth it?', and from there decide, personally, where the line is.

@smartypantsnyc thats fine. If a guy with a knife walks into a house and kills family of 4, 4 people are dead. If a guy with a knife walks into a house intending to kill a family of 4, but is shot dead instead, thats 4 lives saved (or three if you offset the death of the badguy. Same with if he kills 1 before dying, or kills 2 or 3, or is just wounded severely enough to not be able to function.

@smartypantsnyc The last part is important - if the intent is to protect yourself & your family, there are times when no one dies, and times when no one is shot. Its hard to quantify this, since we cannot measure intent in an objective way in many cases, hence, no metric to determine lives saved. I'm not mentioning the number of lives saved by cops who have to kill nutzoid meth-heads on rampages, or active shooters at a mall. I'm also not mentioning some more esoteric theories.

Part 2. Banning people from owning guns makes no sense. Guns are used for more things, than just murder. They are used for recreation and for self-protection, and taking away guns does not prevent killing from occurring. Guns don't go off by themselves, somebody has to pull the trigger. And if Meathead is against lethal weapons, why don't we ban baseball bats, sharp knives, rope, and cars.

The writers for this show are/were ignorant of the 2nd amendment, and try their best to make Bunker's p-o-v look silly. The 2nd amendment is essentially saying, "we need a military/police force in order to protect the nation," AND "People have the right to own guns." In the UK people are forbidden to own weapons for self defense yet the crime rate is through the roof. When Europeans tell me that Americans have too many guns, I ask them to look at their own history: What did they do when either the Nazis or the Soviets invaded their country, broke into people's homes, rounded them up and sent them to camps? The Supreme Court has consistently ruled, without question, that the 2nd Ammendment protects private citizens' right to own firearms. They should have done their fact checking before they did this episode.
