  • Cummins ISM Engines on the 2600's and 2800's........Not CATERPILLAR engines. My dad is a Mechanic at Cleveland RTA, and he works on them when they break down. Very great knowledge about the different bus models RTA has!

  • @MrAnimeranger Alright. I was told by the fleet director these have CAT but I'll take the word of a mechanic instead. Thanks.

  • these sounds almost similar to the mbta's Neoplan AN440LF those have the same engine and transmission

  • these CAT C9s sound like ISLs

  • @flyerbuses5000 You can noticed from the exterior during its acceleration, its loud just like SEPTA's 2003-2004 New Flyer D40LF

  • You've gotta check out Mountain Metropolitan Transit's 2006 Gillig BRT's They've got the Caterpillar C9 engine and Allison B400R6 gearbox. They have an excellent and unique sound.

  • @MMTfan1 Cool. Gillig with a Cat is somewhat rare too.

  • @TheTransitCamera Yep. Mountain Metropolitan Transit is perhaps the only transit authority in the country to have more than one order of Gilligs with the CAT C9. They bought 12 in 2006, 7 in 2007, and 6 in 2008. The 06's are 40 feet long. The 07's and 08's are 35 feet long and have the Voith D864.5 gearbox.

  • These are ISM powered buses....not Cat powered.

  • Sounds like ISM

  • You're actually right TheTransitCamera. The Cummins ISM engine will no longer be produced by the end of 2009, so I guess the ISL is the only available engine for the Transit Application while the ISX is for the Tour Bus Application

  • I'm going to miss the ISM. BTW with the new D60LFRs and D60LFAs RTA got recently, do they still have CAT or something else now?

  • Those are Cummins ISL powered.

  • What about the 11.9-liter ISX? That will replace the ISM, but in transit buses?

  • @6V92TA Cummins ISM not ISL.

  • On all cummins powered buses, there's always a loud hum that goes along with the engine as the rpm increases on New Flyer bus. For some reason, on other new buses (2008-beyond Orion VII NG CNG and diesel operated by Long Island Bus and Fairfax Connector, NABI 35LFW CNG seen in City of Commerce, and NABI 60 BRT, there's no hum in it on cummins powered buses. Previous buses built before that that has cummins engine has a loud hum that hums along with the engine as the rpm increases.

  • Definitely no hum on any Gillig buses i've seen either.

  • Because of the modification of engines to meet for 2010 EPA regulation. For engines on New Flyer Buses, there's still a hum on their buses too even on the Xcelsior model.

  • Wow man this sounds just like the TTC Orion VII's with the ISL engines, the way this bus roars with power. Awesome!

  • The engine sounds the best

  • I like it.

  • Unfortunately, Jayness1190 told me that CAT engine are no longer available to buses due to its engine failed to past the emission standards.

  • Yeah, now it's just Cummins ISL I guess. Even the ISM is going away for New Flyers (and probably others too) because of emissions :(

  • Cummins ISM? So far there's no report of the Cummins ISM performance. Its only CAT engine that's reported to be longer producing engines for buses

  • Cat is planning to leave the on-highway engine business, and also has plans to partner with Navistar (formerly International Harvester), the company who will be the one to make trucks with the Cat nameplate (!).

  • @TheTransitCamera Detroit Diesel is now available to transit buses.
