  • Tekken is best fighting game ever!!!

  • this video is weak sauce!

  • Guilty Gear Series best fighting games

  • Fail not even mention of one fighter by snk.Such as samurai shodown or even the king of fighters serise. Not to mention capcom did have a healthly rivalry with snk.

  • Heil Samurai spirits

  • This is the most half-assed look at the history of fighting games that I have ever seen.

The rivalry between SNK and Capcom was barely even mentioned.

  • "Samurai Showdown" introduced Weapons to the genre!

The Soul-Games were just the first in 3d

  • Boxing and wrestling games don't count. Heavyweight Champ is more of a boxing game than a fighting game. This makes Warrior (by Vectorbeam) the earliest fighting game.

  • @Hurley1080 Before Primal Rage, there was Dino Rex.

  • Look up "First fighting games in history." at the NeoGeoForLife forum, and you'll see a list of fighting games that were the firsts.

  • So Mortal Kombat took a mature approach to the genre, Soul Blade was the first fighting game to feature weapons, online play is the backbone of modern fighters, and the key feature of the latest fighters is better graphics? Ye gods. Has the maker of this video even played a fighting game, or is this one big troll?

  • Weak..not a single mention or at least a screen flash of Killer Instinct or Samurai Showdown. This video shouldnt be called "History" of Fighting at all. A more fitting title would be "Half Assed" Glance at Fighting Games.

  • @Jaggnathar They're not naming every game you shit head. They're explaining the history and breakthroughs/changing through fighting games. RETARD!

  • what about the dbz fighting games?

  • king of fighters

  • they forgot Samurai Showdown :( and Powerstone :((

  • missing a lot, pretty terrible actually.

  • whats the name of the song?

  • i mean the song where it shows the name of the video in the video

  • far too rushed

  • woo TEKKEN

  • No mention of:

    Killer Instinct

    Anything by SNK

    Anything by Arc System Works

    Yie Ar Kung Fu

No facts check (Claiming Soul series created weapons based fighting, when Battle Arena Toshinden had it before them, Mortal Kombat 4 had it slightly after Toshinden, and Samurai Showdown had it before all of them, and had they not ignored SNK completely, they would've known that).

This was a horrible list, and a horrible history lesson on the genre. Gametrailer's did it more justice.

  • you are also wrong. Time Killers introduced weapons based fighting in 1992, Samurai Showdown came out in JAPAN in 1993. time killers let you dismember opponents and kill them mid round.

  • I stand correct about Samurai Showdown being the first. But in a spin to make myself LOOK smarter, it still had it before Battle Arena Toshinden, MK4, & the Soul series, which is how I worded it.

Regardless, there's at least 4 games that had weapon based fighting before Soul Edge was released, and a simple fact check of that would've made the guy who made this video look less stupid.

  • ACTUALLY...

A much earlier weapons-based fighting game was an overhead arcade game called "Warrior", by Vectorbeam in 1979.

( And there's way too many 'know-it-alls' who really know so little on Youtube. And in real life too. )

  • @endofthelinejoel Warrior was also the very first fighting game. Although, Heavyweight Champ came first, boxing and wrestling don't count.

  • @biglex42 Blandia, another weapons based modern fighting game also came out in 1992. The earliest fighting game that uses weapons was Warrior (by Vectorbeam). The earliest 2D fighter that uses weapons was Great Swordsman (by Taito and uncredited Allumer).

  • Yeah Killer Instinct WOot

  • um, what do you expect. it's machinima. plus, KI=gay.

  • Are you serious? You lost cred * infinity for calling KI gay. That game innovated, and was a truly fun game to play in a time where arcade fighters were getting stale.

  • That was like 94'. Even though it was 300x better than mortal kombat, there were tons of fighting games that surpassed it in terms of depth, gameplay, and re-playability.

  • I actually thoughts this review missed many of the developments, sequels and basically ignored SNK. Thanks for producing this either way.

  • Tekken: FTW!

  • W00t! I love Mortal Kombat!

  • Mortal kombat is the best fighting game of all time!!!

  • I completely agree! Although, I like street fighter too.

  • battle area tousinden was the 1st 3d weapon fight i thought

  • your right plus the video says that soul blade was the first weapon fighter period but i know samurai showdown was

  • no.....Time Killers, then Samurai Showdown....Toshinden came years later.

  • im talking about 3d weapon fighters

  • Street Fighter: Thimbs Down

Mortal Kombat (2D Games Only) : Thumbs Up

Super Smash Bros( The Whole Series):

Thumbs Thourgh the Ozone Layer (whats left of it anyway) ;)

  • of 3d fighters its all about tekken 3 and of 2d fighters its all about umk3 and marvel vs capcom 2

  • MK2, the best of the best. SF2 Turbo is second place.

  • Anyone remember Bushido Blade?

  • 2:23

This is why I love Smash Bros.

  • It's not letting me watch anything on youtube for some reason. I've using safari on windows xp and is updated if that is useful. Can someone explain without being a jackass and help me ?

  • Marvel vs Capcom 2.i used to play that til my eyelids crusted open

  • Why did it show the 32X version of Virtua Fighter?

  • Street Fighter and Tekken, plus the cross-over games they mentioned.

  • Mortal Kombat Armageddon, MK vs DC, Street Fighters 4, Super Street Fighters Turbo and Ultimate Mk3 along with Marvel vs Capcom were the best......Tekken is alrite.......Virtual Fighters sucks though

  • didn't mention enough SNK games... *sigh*

  • tekken and mortal kombat are like the best of the best in my opinion. but i do give respect to street fighter for starting it all, i just grew up with mk and tekken. 5/5 ^_^

  • Bullshit Soul Blade introduced weapon based fighting games. Samurai Shodown did that back in 1993.

  • Smash isn't a fighter.

  • than what is it?

  • Platformer.

    Or Party.

  • shit

  • this is good, but it didn't mention SNK's 3v3 system or DoA's stage hazards

  • virtual fighter sucks balls

  • U MISSED SSBB

  • "...improved on the 3D styling of Virtua Fighter and introduced an extremely complex control system allowing for a more entertaining fighting experience."

Shallow analysis courtesy of a downsyndrome soundbite.

  • I remember when Street Fighter 2 was out in arcades, talk about a game that used to eat up some quarters. That game was the ish back in the day. It would have the local arcade packed with people, don't see that much today (with the home gaming systems we have today, that's not really surprising).

  • complements to the chef who made this.

  • Samurai Showdown came several years before Soul Blade. It should be the first infamous fighting game to use weapons based combat instead of the latter franchise.

  • Good video but yeah, they don't even mention the SS series.

  • DoA wasn't revolutionary? Wasn't it DoA2 that introduced tag team gameplay, which came out shortly before and was popularized by the Capcom fighting crossovers? Also incorporated in Tekken Tag. and let's not forget it's countering system that would later be incorporated in other fighting games to some degree.

  • Fatal Fury had tag team play long before DoA was a figment of our imagination.

  • Did it really? When I say "tag team" I mean having the ability to switch partners on the fly....Was Fatal Fury like that?

  • Marvel Vs Capcom was the best.....so much memories

  • corporate fucks

  • Aww wow where's DOA?

  • DoA is a Virtua Fighter rip off with great graphics and horrible gameplay. Countering ahs been around since SS.

  • How is it a rip-off of virtua fighter....Just because it was 3-D? Tekken was 3-D also. Other 3-D fighting games may not be as complex as VF but I wouldn't say DoA was a rip-off. Was Countering first introduced in SS? I don't know about that. Could you explain the countering system in that game?

  • do history of the FPS

  • yeah awesome

  • they actually missed out alot of games in here..but i guess they didnt wanna make this video too long and draggy..just pointing out those that got really mainstream..really brings back memories there :)

btw guys, want to share with you about this new blog that shows only the best youtube videos, reviewed, scripted and discussed!

    (sharing/recommendation)

    w w w . kampaitube. b l o g s p o t. c o m

  • whats the song that starts at 0:27 ?? please reply :)

  • kevjumba's videos

  • you should have included dragonballz like dbz budokai tenkaichi 3 cuz of the 3d

  • It wasn't revolutionary.

  • uhhh titays.

    that's revolutionary.

  • Whaaa?? No SNK?? KoF and Samurai Showdown???

  • SoulCalibur reigns supreme!

Except 4. We disavow SoulCal 4.

  • Should have mentioned Activision Boxing, Pit Fighter and Double Dragon

  • DD doesn't count. It's more of an adventure game

  • Did you Guys See THAT!!! 2:21

    That was crazy!!

  • im mad at this video because they didnt mention anything about KILLER INSTICT the first to actually have the best of both worlds and SICKNESS OF COMBOS AND THE FIRST TIME EVER COMBO BRAKERS!!!!!!!!!! omg that game was FLAWLESS

  • ahhh, i do miss that game.

  • I agree. Killer Instinct was the first Fighting Game I took serious when it came to trying to master it so I could impress my friends. Ah to be 11 again. Thumbs up for mentioning KI.

  • C-c-c-c COMBO BREAKER

  • Its a shame they didnt mention Killer Instinct. Wasn't it that game that gave us the multi-hit combo?

  • Hells yea lol

  • yeah wtf without the Ultra Combo we would still be landing one to two hits on our opponents

  • also agreed, killer instinct definitely deserved a mention. lol my games were KI, teenage mutant ninja turtles tournament fighter, and tekken 3 xD

  • This is me growing up! Great video.

  • W00t! I love Mortal Kombat!

  • i like how u used the sacred combo

  • Fighting games have always been my favorite game genre.

  • wait weres river city ransom?

  • Ahhhh

this video is very nostalgic for me

  • SF2 is best fighting game ever...

  • nice video but i dont see enything about "kof"

    the king of fighters

    dragonball is not a game

  • LoL that Captain Falcon Kill was Epic :D

  • when are they going to remake marvel vs capcom 2 and make it online. i think thats the best fighting game yet. very hard to find

  • Wheres Killer Instinct? :(

  • I know :-( but if you think about it..if they added EVERY fighting game then it would be like..hours long.

  • K.i. was actually good though o.O

  • They also forgot about Battle Arena Toshinden which was the real first 3-D weapons fighting game. Sure it didn't age well but in its day it riveled Virtua Fighter. This video is weak sauce.

  • Thanks to MK Armageddon, Soul Calibur 4, and Street Fighter 4, fighting games have reached what I believe is their peak. Yeah, I didn't mention Mortal Kombat Vs DC, and that's because DC characters only turned MK away from its violent origins...the very reason Mortal Kombat is famous.

  • what about killer instinct? that game is just forgotten about by everybody

  • I was just going to say that.

  • Now that was one kick ass game, and yes one of the most under rated games ever.

  • what about dragonball?

  • Also, Capcom Vs. SNK 2 wasn't the first online fighter.

Sega did it with both Virtua Fighter Remix and Virtual On for the Sega Saturn.

  • Soul Blade didn't begin that series. Soul Edge did. Blade was a home port with tweaks.

  • What happened to Samurai Shodown? KOF? GG? Killer Instinct? Those all brought something new to the table. 3min history could have easily been an hour. Meh...

  • lol ur so right. . i know Street Fighter and MK are the grandfathers of this. . . but Samurai Shodown came out before Soulblade. . . so either way SS came out with " weapons " for fighting games before Soulblade. . . now how they forgot King of Fighters/Fatal Fury in 91' i have no clue

  • I agree. I spent more time with KOF and Samurai showdown at the local arcade than I did with any of the games mentioned. Those were all console games to me

Don't forget primal fury (?) or rage...i forget

  • primal rage

  • You missed out on the strides that some games made

  • nice video and well executed

    good job ;D

  • Yie Ar Kung-Fu is said by several people (especially those in Japan) to be the basis for modern fighting games, and was what inspired Capcom to create the Street Fighter series. It was quite popular, especially in Japan, because Japan was more interested in video games than any other region when Yie Ar Kung-Fu was released. The earliest cross-over fighting game I can think of is The King of Fighters '94, which has characters from Fatal Fury, Art of Fighting, Psycho Soldier and Ikari Warriors.

  • Thanks for clearing up the 1st TRUE cross-over fighting game. How the heck did the author skip KOF series??

  • you can tell this guy doesnt know what the hell hes talking about - hes just reading a script someone gave him

  • i dont care

  • hemp homes hemp fuels hemp FUELS!! hemp cars hemp clothings hemp biodegradeable plastics ( zelfo ) hemp furnitures hemp papers hemp paints and all of them are eco-friendly, BETTER efficient products that if we grew in america legally.. would make us FILTHY rich... no more importing..... no more imperialist american elites. yes we cannabis. legalize not legal lies.

  • Ok, that falcon punch setup was sick.

  • Smash Brothers is NOT a fighting game!

  • then what is it?

  • LOL. Then what is it?

  • Your right! It's about getting along with players and having tea!

SHUT THE FUCK UP!! I'LL KICK YOUR ASS WITH SAMUS FOR SAYING THAT!!

  • Is the SSB series actually a party game? I believe it's more like a fighting-platforming hybrid.

  • I'll agree with that.

I always just called it a party game, but i can see the hybrid part now that you mention it.

  • It's a pretty decent history of fighting games for a really short video, but it could've been better. You left out key games like Killer Instinct and Guilty Gear and also left out one of the biggest contributors to the genre-- SNK.

  • 2:22 - 2:25 FALCON PUNCH!!!!

  • "Soul Edge" not "Soul Blade." It was renamed when it was released for home consoles.

  • Maybe he is talking about the arcade one.

  • This aint no full list, How about Streets of Rage?

  • That's a beat 'em up, not a versus fighting game. The earliest beat 'em up was Irem's Kung-Fu Master, which got a Japan-only sequel (Spartan X 2), an unusual Game Boy port (Kung-Fu Master) and a spiritual successor (Vigilante).

  • Tekken is gay dude xD

  • whoo hoo

  • What is this crap? It's not like Machinima to put together a real stinker like this.

I'm not just a nostalgiafag; I remember what games reserved their place in history as infuential, and this video just covered 3-4 of the most basic/generic fighters and wasn't very comprehensive.

Killer Instinct, King of Fighters, Guilty Gear, Powerstone; all left their marks in history.

  • I agree- they really didn't do any homework on this. Lets not forget the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fighting games too.

  • Tournament Fighter!

    Ahh... good times, man. XP

  • I remember playing Killer Instincts :) that game was the shit! CINDER FOR THE MOTHER FUCKING WIN!

  • fuck yea and that bitch that turned into a tiger or whatever

  • That was the least comprehensive shit i've ever seen. Have to talk about Killer Instinct! King of Fighters, Tobal 2, Toshinden n other shit?

  • Left out "Battle Arena Toshinden"...

    Too bad.

  • Hm. Was... okay. Talked about "Street Fighter 2" but showed clips from Super Street Fighter 2. Also, X-Men Vs. Street fighter was Marvel Vs. Capcom's predecessor, so it should've been the mention.

And sadly, as others have mentioned, you left out the KI series.

  • X-Men: Children of the Atom had Akuma (a.k.a. Gouki) as the secret character, which caused Capcom to create cross-overs. This might of also been inspired by SNK's idea of adding Ryo Sakazaki from the Art of Fighting series to Fatal Fury Special as the secret final boss, which caused SNK to create The King of Fighters series. Data East sort of did the same thing with their Fighter's History series, when they added Karnov, the Ox from the Karate Champ arcade and Chelnov.

  • oh i just remembered... ClayFighter!

  • anyone here remember Bio F.R.E.A.K.S. for N64 and PS?

  • Biofreaks was interesting. The dismemberment was great... like fighting the rest of the match with one arm missing lol.

  • that game was pretty fun lol

  • yeah thanks! but i think there was another one too... anyway

cant. think. shiny. thing. distracting. me.

  • Bloody Roar and Killer Instinct FTW

and there were also a few animal/dinosaur fighting games on the snes.. forgot the names, but they were pretty decent

  • Right with you man and bloody roar and killer instinct were one of my favourite games of all time

  • HablaskakaKaduken!!!!!

  • killer instinct machinima you missed out in one of the greatest fighting video games ever !

  • still undefeated in street fighter....any challengers who wants a beating?

  • My personal favorite fighting series are:

    3) Street Fighter

    2) Soul

    1) SSB.

I also liked Bloody Roar... until they removed the blood from it... then the title didn't make sense.... but anyway.

I agree that SNK games should have been mentioned, but it was only a 3 minute video.

  • can't forget killer instinct. :) i was addicted to that game when it was in the arcade.

  • Lol, yeah, that too. =)

They left out a lot of great fighting games/series... but like I said, it was only a 3 minute video. They should have made it longer. :D
