My grandmother met Linda Blair once at a cocktail party in california about 20 years ago. She said even though they only spoke for less than 10 minutes she was very polite & lady like. Linda Blair is a normal woman, who just happened to be in a film that became iconic in horror. & Left a impact on all people that saw it. The problem with people is they believe what they see on tv, They judge a persons character, Even if it's a person of fiction. They let thier imaginations run wild to idiot town
funny how in the end it was humans that tortured and haunted Linda Blair not demons , spirits, or curses. Just goes too show that the human race is the most frightening thing. These people were possessed by their own thoughts and beliefs not by the devil
her life became so frightening, that she didn't even have children, fearing something would happen to them, which is terrible, i feel bad for linda, having to live in fear for a great deal of her life because of some f**king idiots, see what religion does to some people, turns them into f**king monsters but for them their doing it in the name of GOD, get the f**k outta here, your doing it cause your a moron who can't separate reality from fiction
people are so stupid sometimes, some people are so easily manipulated, are they really that slow that they can't separate reality from a movie, she was acting, playing a role, hello!
I remember when I bought this on dvd, my mom was telling me about how her parents and grandparents went to see this when it first came out and people were legit throwing up and fainting and running out of the theater and then told me when she and her best friend watched it at like 1am with all the lights off. Now when I watch it, I'm not scared as easily cuz I'm pretty used to all the special effects...guess they werent ;D hahaha great movie, my favorite.
Man I wish I had been alive when the movie hit theaters! I would have loved to just watch the crowd. The reactions back then remind me a bit of the reactions to the movie Paranormal Activity.
I don't remember how old I was when I saw this movie for the 1st time, all I know is that I've seen it over 20+ times and I never get tired of it. The fact that there were no computer graphics used (not like in todays movies) just makes it that more remarkable!
This really was a masterpiece before it's time. You know something's good if it had that much of an effect on people. Only wish was that Linda could have stayed in show business after all of that.
I never appreciated how idiotic people could be until I wrote a novel with a particularly brutal scene in it. Some people assumed I was a monster, and I received a death threat. The thing isn't even published yet. Just a few people reading the manuscript and word of mouth were enough to do that. Poor Linda Blair!
linda blair is a fantastic actress and person i had the chance to meet her one time at a function for animals and she is so level headed and normal. i have to say about the acadamy award she should of won, if she had won that award no way would people given her the crap they had given her all these years, she is a true actress and one of the most great actresses in hollywood
My sisters said, after they'd been to the cinema to see it,that whilst they were queueing to see it that congregants of the Salvation Army were trying to deter people from watching but that they'd keep the citadel open so anyone who felt they needed to talk could do so once they'd left the cinema! They also mentioned that audience members were fainting or rushing to leave or puking in the aisles! Can't ever recall a 'modern day' film having that effect! Still the BEST!
@LeeUnited4eva What you need to understand was that this movie came out in 1973, and at this time the whole idea of possession, and even the gore used in the film was so new and unsettling to a good fraction of the public.
imagine lindas boyfriends when theyre having intercourse after this film ,and linda like lots of women say "fuck me" lol i bet they soiled the bed hahaha.
linda blair is a chrstian how can people think all these bad things abouit her bunch of idiots should be a shame to them selves linda is a awsome actress love to meet her one day
This is a really interesting documentary, except for the stupid music and editing choice... Its almost like they're trying to make the documentary itself scary or something, but why?? Isn't the whole point of this documentary to debunk the hysteria that followed Blair after the film was released? Whoever edited this documentary is an idiot.
@4368jkoch "Life lost"? People die every day in the course of humanity going about our lives. Some people die while at work. Some people die who are related to other people who are at work when it happens, or when they get the news of the passing. That several deaths occurred during the months-long process of making this film does not mean that the film /caused/ the deaths.
@Vortigern99 Nine deaths IS a lot of deaths for the relatively small circle of people involved with the film in general. Certainly not proof, but something to think about.
(Anyone know how to get rid of this stupid @ feature)
I found the ducumentary in my collection. It was from a documentary about visual and sound effects, not a documentary specifically about The Exorcist, although a good 15-20 minutes of the 90 minute documentary is dedicated to this film.
It also covers Cannibal Holocaust, Susperia, and a few others.
I think that I'll upload it. It's quite old but quite good
Does anyone remember a documentary about The Exorcist where one segment got really in depth about how they made the audio effects?
I remember a man being interviewed saying that the main sound artist used and old cracked leather wallet to create the noise heard when the demon made Regan's head do the 360.
There was some really interesting information about the behind the scenes people.
It's not "Fear of God: 25 years..." that is posted on this site but it was very much like it.
The power of cinema can have a strong impact on people who can't differentiate art from reality. As for the deaths during the film's production and fires incinerating sets, it was a long shoot. Both 'The Shining' and 'Legend' had long shoots and problems with sets burning down. An equally tumultuous production, for different reasons, is 'Apocalypse Now', with a typhoon destroying sets and it's lead actor going into cardiac arrest. Making a film can be a tough job, any way you slice it.
Max von Sydow thinks all the talk about "the curse of The Exorcist" is rubbish. It was a long shoot - about a year - people will die in the course of a year, whether they're making horror movies or not!
this is insane that anyone would put theyre daughter through what she did just for fame and money ,she wasnt even old enough 2 watch the film. The fact that the devil was played by a acutal child is sickaing she didnt have a chance! its a ADULT film if children cant watch it they sure shouldnt be in it!!!
just stupid people taking it way to seriously its just a movie i watched this first time when i was about 12 and yes i was scarred and i didnt sleep well but i didnt go insane and tried to commit suicide ,idiots
I think she also doesnt have anything to do with satan. But the fact she played this much good by blieving in her role, the movie became something more than reality it self...
@butterclip well it was the early 70's they never had a film like this ever it made people faint, puke, and traumatized them in the theaters some walked out becuase it was too much....They didn't have internet cell phones so they that what kind of kid would want to do this kind of film....They thought this was real basically -.-
It's hard for me to believe that people hear about all the strange occurrences associated with the filming and the purported effects it had on some people, yet STILL do not believe in Satan and demons. They exist, but, people will continue to deny that despite whatever evidence they see, if they don't really want to believe it for whatever reason.
i don't think people believed more in God or the devil in the 70's,i just think the subject mater of this movie was never before seen especially in such raw form until this movie came out.nowadays people love gore and blood in horror movies, however this movie wasn't just about the special effects and the gore the entire story was very uneasy that people were shaken up by that as much if not more then the actual violence in the movie. a young average girl being possessed is nothing to sneeze at.
If you watch the cast reunion on Good Morning America, the actress who played the mom said it was the scene at the hospital that made most people faint. That's when they put a needle in her throat.
@lukehiggins123456 hours? i've been truely terrified for 9 years after seeing this. hahah. horror movies are terrible nowadays. look at all of the exorcism movies they make now to try and get the shock value from this movie. they're so innacurate its actually funny. its amazing how accurate blatty was to the tell tale signs and actions of a possesed being. i saw a movie that showed a girl who was possessed by satan. anyone who saw or read the exorcist knows the devil wouldnt possess somebody!!
Even though the 70's where allready messed up, the reaction people had to the movie shows you that their moral standards where still way better than today's.
If the Movie would have been made today. Not only would nobody faint or complain about it being too violent or demonic... on the contrary they would propably complain about it being too boring and not violent enough (as some kids complaint on the YouTube Comments).

No, she has taken her fame from this movie and parlayed it into a fascinating career. Her work with animals is stunning. Her memories of making this film are mostly fine.

My father was a security guard and was assigned to a movie theater back when this came out.
He and the other guards ended up dragging a couple people out of the theater who were having nervous breakdowns because it scared them so bad.
