  • What harmony thanks

  • superb rendition.

  • Beautiful..

  • Does Rufus sing a bit too loud in others' estimation?

  • @haanashim NO!

  • @haanashim Yeah, I think so too. Might have been a bit hard to find and keep his part with all those voices singing higher than he was.

  • going to play this on my gospel show its amazing rendition of a very old song

  • pfffffff

  • Beautiful song, wonderful voices and harmonies...so moving!

  • 13 dislikes?? Good grief!

  • Stephen Foster rocks!

  • what a wonderful song full of sorrow and grace ... sung by great voices thank you

  • I agree entirely, Michinil. And I must have heard at least twenty-five renditions. This is the one that "gets" what Foster meant. Poor man.

  • Rufus Wainwright's harmony is absolutely wonderful.

  • Lindo! Realmente fantástico.

  • I love this song, pretty much from anyone who sings it. But this version is one of my very favorites. Boy, can these folks sing.

Unless you knew your history, you would not realize it was written in 1854. That shows you quality can just last forever.

  • Pure and intense musical perfection.

  • Extraordinario, el vídeo, y extraordinarias las voces. Gracias.

  • Whenand where was this particular recording actually made? Would be grateful to have these detalis. Beautiful in every way. Thank you for uploading.

  • @auguritutto Recorded somewhere in Scotland a couple of years back for a TV show called "The Transatlantic Sessions". Most are available on CD and as "kennyfraserdotcom" says two posts below the DVD will be released September 2011.

  • @CdrCrabbe01 Thank you kindly for this feedback to my query. Appreciated.

  • THIS BEAUTIFUL SONG COULD APPLY TO JUST ABOUT ANY CULTURE WHICH HAS BEEN OPPRESSED BY BULLIES. IT HELPS TO HEAL THE SORES CAUSED BY WHITE TO THE BLACKS IN U.S.A., AND WHAT THE FRENCH DID TO MUSLIMS IN ALGERIA, WHAT CATHOLIC SPAIN DID TO PROTESTANTS, WHAT ENGLAND DID TO THE IRISH, WHAT ENGLAND DID TO HER OWN WORKING CLASSES AND SO ON AND ON AND ON. THIS IS A SONG OF HEALING. A GOOD INTERNATIONAL ANTHEM.

  • @squirell1952 I hope it helps heal all the sores and damage you've done to your prick you stupid jerk off.

  • @joeytwosubs Totally uncalled for!

  • Transatlantic Sessions 2 is to be officially released on DVD in September 2011. You can pre-order it at Music Scotland.

  • Today I heard this song for the first time at a memorial service. Very fitting and very sad.

  • enjoyed.

  • The saddest song I have ever heard.

  • I am deeply moved. It strums place deep and reassures.

  • wow beautiful voices for a wonderful song =)

  • Kate was the most generous musician I've ever known of. Her song "Heart Like a Wheel" zoomed Linda Ronstadt, then in danger of being known as a teeny bopper one-hit wonder after the Stone Ponies and "Different Drum," into international stardom. She wrote songs that her ex-husband, Loudon Wainwright III, performs enthusiastically as his own. And what lyrics--"And it's only love, and it's only love that can wreck a human being and turn him inside out." She understood what it is to be human.

  • @susoyev Loudon Wainwright III sings some of this stuff, that is true, but he never said they were his songs. This extremely gifted family of musicians including the Wainwrights and McGarrigles often cover each others' songs. That's a good thing -by the way...

  • I only wish they'd included the last verse, because the magnitude of the singing readily does justice to the beauty and form of the song. True, today's audience has little patience for things running any length, but still, they'd easily have gotten away with it, and still retained our attention. Excellent!

  • who;s the doll on Mary Blacks right shoulder......they are all sublime.. areckin.

  • @TheDiarmaidable Karen Matheson, lead singer with Scottish traditional group Capercaillie. Great voice, as well as being a doll!

  • note for note faithful to the original sheetmusic-timeless and touching.beautifully done!

  • Ace's ..................

  • Looking forward to hearing Brett Dennen cover this on the Parenthood finale tonight.

  • @patrickwinterstube i was wondering if that was him! i wish someone had it uploaded on youtube..

  • Looking forward to hearing Brett Dennen cover this on the Parenthood finale tonight.

  • Please, please, please bring out "Pronto Monto" on CD, now is the time..!

  • i never knew you but i miss you deeply, dear Kate.

You are always in our hearts...

    and forever in our prayers.

  • This blows me away everytime.

  • The best version of this song..beautifully sung

  • The good looker with the grey hair is Emmylou Harris, still beautiful and singing well

  • the great songs stand the test of .it's the humanity of the piece, beautifully realised by modern masters.timeless

  • WOW! Just wow! SO powerful. So moving.

  • Yep. That's rufus. Next to his mum. Right there. First thing at the start.

  • I don't know who anyone is in this clip, so I must ask: is Rufus standing next to his mother?

  • So sad this is all but inaudible - please, please pump up the volume!

  • SO AMAZING so beautiful

    from diskobear@olsen.mail.dk

  • Lovely.

  • were singing this in our concert

  • wow its so amazing

  • Beautiful...

  • The best of the best gathered for such a simple song,

P.S I see Emmylou Harres and Mary Black too, why are they not mentioned.

  • @JanMelet go back and read the full description, both Emmylou Harris and Mary Black are both mentioned.

On the right hand side of the screen, opposite the poster's name, you will see a drop down arrow. Click on that, and you will see the full list of performers.

  • Beautiful absolutely beautiful.

  • @111oooo agreed, I love this...

  • You can find this song on iTunes in the album Transatlantic Sessions Series 1 Volume 2. For some reason it says the artists are Aly Bain and Jay Ungar.

  • Just a perfect interpretation, moving beyond words.

On this recording, Anna's harmonies are exceptional

  • Absolutely mind-blowing. Thanks a lot for sharing.

  • This version of this song captures the sorrow of the words better than any other version I have heard.

  • This is the real American musical heritage.

    Not R&R and not C&W

  • Music doesn't come better than this!

  • Wow. What a line-up. Beyond compare.

  • This is great and something most could identify with and done supreamly.

  • Stephen Foster. Written in 1854- seriously hard times. And Stephen died ten years later in 1864, a pauper in Bellevue Hospital. Hard times come again no more dear soul.

  • Kate McGarrigle, the legacy you have left in your wake will carry on in the music of your family who are still on this side. Be at peace.

  • verry good is there a cd or dvd from these recordings I like to have one.

    please help KC.

  • @keescirkel

Hi KC, most of their repertoire is still in print, and if you go to their page, there are links to the usual outlets. Or you could support your local record shop. wwwdotmcgarrigledotcom

  • Is there an cd or dvd from these sesions I have try a few stores here in the netherlands but nobudy nows, I like also wil the circle be unbroken,

I can find the songs from other proformers but this is the best.

    thanks KC.

  • @keescirkel All Celtic Music has this for sale. Vol 2 Transatlantic Sessions

  • @bridiekemp Thanks-- is this in video and available in United States for purchase? I didn't find any DVDs or videos available -- or is it a CD only?

  • @bridiekemp Thanks-- is this in video and available in United States for purchase?h

  • @ArtL7 I don't think it's for sale in the US, but you can order it from Scotland---

For a LONG time there were eBay sellers with bootleg copies going for nearly $50.

  • Times very tough in America and around our planet all over again, hoping it's better for everyone soon.

  • One of the most genuine songs I know, with singers to match. Wow.

  • You might not be breathing or living anymore..in me you two are so much ALIVE!

    Till I pass away.

    Bernard

  • No business. No Money. No Nothing. Just the hard life. Like Mine here in Leke.

So perfectly honest and genuine this song.

    So great!

Greater than all...if I come to think of it.

    Bernard

  • Beautiful - absolute perfection.

  • This is simply a beautiful rendition of a great old folk song. I really do wonder why we don't hear this sung more often. I attend a few Bluegrass Festivals every year and never hear the song--I would think this would be a natural at the moment.

  • It's fixed! To whatever cybergods are responsible for restoring this beautiful performance, my heartfelt thanks.

  • Please someone sort the bip on the recording of this wonderful rendition!

  • Since there have been nearly 300,000 views of this clip, I assume it must have been in good shape at some point, but now it's intolerably bad, progressing from unsynchronized sound to broken-up sound to silence. Can anything be done?

  • I just found out tonight Kate went to heaven,,, Its a better place now and The music will be better now that kate has joined that heavenly choir. But i have a feeling Kate will do a lot of solo spots..Heaven be your brd Kate xx

  • PLEASE resubmit this video ... beautiful song, but broken after 1.56

  • TRULY MAGNIFICENT.

  • Any American viewers of these wonderful videos should take the time to write to the BBC about releasing the DVDs in NTSC format for U.S. customers.

  • Great video.

If you're wondering who the performers are, they are: Kate & Anna McGarrigle, Rufus Wainwright, Emmylou Harris, Mary Black, Karen Matheson & Rod Paterson

  • Magnificent....simply MAGNIFICENT!!!

  • Stunning so this can move.

A beautifull inspiration, to listening and sing my self

Is there any one ho can tell me if there is sheetmusic of the songs ?

  • Stephen Foster. Just marvelous. And such a tragedy his death at 37 at Bellevue hospital in 1864, having fallen out of bed from a fever in his tenement in the Bowery and cutting his head, which infected. "Let us pause in life's pleasures and count its many tears while we all sup sorrow with the poor."

  • This song has been in my mind for so long. OH HARD TIMES COME AGAIN NO MORE

  • My favorite recording of this song was done many years ago by Kate and Anna for a Ken Burns special on the music of the Civil War....surriunded by the entire family, including a very young Rufus. Rest gently sweet voice.

  • My favorite recording of this song was done many years ago by Kate and Anna for a Ken Burns special on the music of the Civil War....surriunded by the entire family, including a very young Rufus. Rest gently sweet voice.

  • Too few Americans know of this heritage. Isn't it great and moving and transcendent and what? We live in a great country but FOX NEWS disses that which makes it so.

Hell yes, there is is room for FOX. But there are also the loons on the Venice boardwalk. They are brilliant too my friend.

  • Love this song. But I prefer Cherish the ladies' version.

  • Does anyone realise, this is a song of pride, No one seems to sing it ever with pride. HARD TIMES COME AGAIN. No more.

  • Please watch me a song in the similar vein! (video titled "Goodbye".) See you in Heaven, Kate! (I hope.)

  • Been a big fan of the McGarrigles for many years. Thanks for posting this! I was very sad to hear of Kate's passing recently.

  • Hard times are over for you now Kate . R.I.P

  • This sounds like a band of angels. I was so sad to read of Kate's death in January. She was a beautiful talent.

  • RIP Kate

  • Indeed. Quite a loss.

  • Amazing song, its power not diminished in the least by time nor the idiot-cracy of America today

  • This song just blows me away every time I watch it! I probably don't express myself very well, but I am moved beyond words by the emotion and talent these great singers bring to this song. If it's true that life goes on, I would love to sing with Kate one day. RIP and thanks for all you have given us.

    Rick

  • I agree completly. What talent, what a pleasure to listen to. Thanks Kate. RIP

  • Just discovered another Stephen Foster song interpreted by Kate and Anna.

It's called "Was my brother in the battle"...

Their interpretation of that song makes you want to weep...

    Have a listen...

  • Dear sew65stew

i too have been playing these Foster songs for a long time

Although not quite the same try what I think is another beautiful Foster song-Slumber my darling by Alison Krauss

  • @SuperSirmat

    stew65stew

re "Was my brother in the Battle"

As a complete computer illiterate who can barely switch on a computer , I seem to have lost access to this haunting song and can no longer find it.Any suggestions as to where I ought to be looking would be appeciated

  • @RagMama123 On the contrary, I think you express yourself quite well. I've listened to many people sing this. Most versions are good this one is particularly true to the original sense. This is a dirge and I think somewhat about Steven Foster's sad life. There is a very good version of this performed by Mare Winningham in "Georgia" a '95 movie about two sisters.

  • great song

  • And hard times have come again.....

  • Whoa, Kate died? I had no idea. I feel awful right now. Atleast this song puts me at ease.

  • When I first found this song it had 47 views, now it has almost 1/4 million and we have lost Kate.......

  • Fantastic..just fantastic!!

  • Very very nice!

  • this song seems to have become an endless lament for me this year, rest in peace Kate,I'm thinking about loss and what Patti Smith said about losing her dear brother that after he passed all his best characeristics came to inhabit her soul and that she became a better person more like him
