The characters in this show get seriously pummeled. The slow-motion and close-ups with the blood leaking out from between shattered teeth and hard gloves grinding into cheeks, pushing them up into the eye and over the mouth...I would never call Hajime no Ippo 'fluffy'. Quite the contrary. In fact, I had considered boxing before watching, and now, while still getting into shape and eating right, I'm wary of getting into any fights anytime soon...I'd like to give it a shot some day, though
I think Hajime no Ippo does display realism. Watch the Dante vs Ricardo fight. Watch any fight. Broken bones, decisions made by seconds, injuries, friendships made, hardships and pain. I think it's as accurate as it can be without compromising the viewers interest.
i'd also like to point out that nowadays people get more serious injuries from sports like american football, rugby and weight lifting than they do boxing because of the strictness of the rules and because of the AIDS fuss a while ago i mean if you compare a fight from Rocky Marciano's days or Joe Bugner or Muhammed Ali with fights from these days you'll see how much safer boxing is nowadays
atm in the manga ippo has dominated japan and is conquering the orient defeating all the national champs atm he is fighting it out with the Indonesian champion who has pure natural talent and won the belt in 3 fights.
the main point of this anime isnt to show what boxing is really like its more to show about how a young boy who finds something he loves to do and goes for it and after putting in lots of effort and training he gets results in the ways of self satisfaction and friends and a change in his life its showing how by trying really hard at something you love you can climb to great heights
its amazing how the japanese turn super deadly activities into fluffy drawn kiddie worlds. Hajime no ippo is to boxing what initial D is to illegal street racing. Both are great stories and cartoons but do not accurately represent the dangers or realities and consequences of such activities during their glorification of them.
I disagree with this, This show is only depicting a young boxer in his early stages of his career ,as the character(Ippo) has been hospitalized before. The show displays brutal ko's all the time, but you don't expect them to kill off the main character as of this is certain to happen to every boxer?
@lllAnimeKidlll I agree with you 100%. Like I stated above, witnessing Date's heartache and sorrow is very intence. As well as it's not like boxers all over die all the time from trauma. It's rare occasions that deaths occur. If someone was to do the math they'd see that the chances of an ippo characters death is slim, esspecially in the ratio of fights that have occured. Plus you must remember that most of the fighters in the show are under 150lbs. Not much murder power there lol.
even young beginner amateurs have experienced fatalities in the ring. These animes are just simply not realistic, i am an amateur boxer, and i was also a drifter, and i loved both the anime's i mentioned, but they are not very realistic and do not portray the dangers of the activities.
says "Hey boxing looks fun and easy".Before watching Ippo i thought boxing was brutal, after watching the entire series.I still think boxing is brutal.
Heck if anything I think Hajime no Ippo makes boxing look even more brutal. Just watching the intro to Champion road you practically felt every blow to Sanada after that gazelle punch
broken fists, broken ribs, jaws, etc. you can really feel for this series. the boxers, the trainers, the ambition, the pain, the pride the broken dream evrything. and its comedy gold in its own way
@bossudude420 there were alot of broken ribs, broken wrists and blood in the anime though, compared to alot of other animes you gotta admit, ippo is pretty close :D
seriously one of the few hajime amvs i truly enjoyed and I loved how you depicted the entire journey so well with the changes of pace.

Touche`, just keep in mind, where your sense of reality intervenes, for others, it does not.
