@MarcS4R Those are both nice options, I have the 100-400 also. The 400mm 5.6 would be great for surfing becuase you are going to be using it in the daylight so you will not need those lower f/stops that cost more money. Ask yourself this question. How far will you be away from the surfers, if you are going to be on the shore, than you may need the 400mm or if you are going to be in a boat, you may want the 100-400mm.
@gonetoworkbbackin5mi If I had to take my pic I would take the used 1DMarkIII for sports shooting. You can't beat a professional body, not to say the 7D is bad for sports, I have one and love mine but use it for my everyday camera. The 7D does do 8 fps and for the cost is a good choice but the 1DMarkIII has more features except for the video mode. So ask yourself if you are going to be doing any video work with it.
@Musicmixer1994 good if you have no money mate. But i recommend you starting off with a 60d or something higher. Try not to go for ones that are 'entry-level'.
My Dream is to become a photographer i want to get a Canon 60D is that a good one for beginning? ive tested it out and so far its amazing but no comparison to a 5D but i dont have the money and what lense should i get i shoot Skateboarding mostly please PLEASE help!!!
hi i am gonna be shooting soccer in a few weeks my first time, can u pls give me some adivse, like wht mode should i be in A or SP. i would like to knw if in A mode wht is the best F# to be in and if in SP mode wht speed should i be in to freeze the moment and have the background blured. any advice will be helpfull. thax
hi there i am a starting photographer and i have the 7d i am going to be doing sports photography, mainly rugby and basketball but i cant choose a lens.what would you reccomend??
100-400mm f/4.55.6.... 70-200mm f2.8 is ii or the 28-300mm f 3.5.5.6
@fergieboy921 Well, if I had a choice I would pick the 70-200 2.8, this will be the fastest of those three and will help you out in Basketball which I assume you will be shooting indoors. For Rugby the longer focal length of the others is good but me personally I would pick the 70-200 2.8. All of those lens are great and serve a purpose, you could use all 3 for those events. Ask yourself what you will be shooting more of? If outdoors, you may like those other choices more for the focallength
@fergieboy921 very simple. if you can afford it, get the 70-200 mark 2. the 28-300 is crap. the 100-400 is fine, but if you need the range, and are serious about the best stuff, then you want to get a 2.8 prime. of course, it is several thousand dollars for each lens. just avoid the 28-300. trust me. the 70-200 mark 2 is a fine lens that will start you off well. once you are sure that you have what it takes, you can invest in a 400/2.8/300/2.8/whatever.
Hi there. Epic equipment and stills of the athletes.
I just picked up the Canon 7d with 100-400 mm f/4.5 5.6L IS USM lens for shooting a different sport. surfing, and water sports as well as some hiking nature shots. Do you have any pointers for a newbee wanna be surf photographer getting started?
@chews4life Your camera and lens are two great pieces of equipment for shooting surfing. Your lens is very versatile and will be great to capture the action at 8fps with your 7D. I started out with the same exact lens as you. It is great for outdoor daylight stuff, indoors is where you want the 2.8 or faster lens. I started out shooting sports in AV mode with a fast lens. With a fast lens, shooting in AV mode will get you a fast shutter to stop the action assuming you have your lens open.
Hi- great sports shots there. Just a quick question. I photograph amature football (or soccer as you guys say!) I use a canon 7D and canon 2.8L 200mm lens. Just wanted some advice on what shutter speed and ISO to use during nigh games under fladlights? These are amature teams so the fladlights are not as powerfull as they are at pro-stadiums. Thanks for your help in advance:-)
@manofpics Well, you have two nice pieces of equipment in the 7D and 70-200 2.8. You should be able to adjust your ISO to like 3200 at night and get a fast shutter with your 7D due to your fast lens. If you are looking for easy, shoot in AV mode and stick your f/ at 2.8. With a 3200 ISO you should be able to achieve a fast shutter to stop action with those settings. Use your center point of focus in AI Servo Mode and away you go.
@manofpics Lighting will always vary from place to place and a lot depends on what type of floodlights they are. I shoot under some pretty bad lights once in a while, a lot of this can be corrected in post production. The basics you need first is to have the correct settings on your camera in order to at least get a good exposure.
Hello mate:) great shots on your site. I was wondering what lense you would recomend for a young and new photographer. I'll mainly use it for sports and bird photography.
I don't have enough money to buy equipment like you, but I was looking at the Sigma 150-500mm lense for canon, i have the 550d by the way. It's affordable for me, really don't wanna go any higher then that. I dont need any crazy lense, just something that works well with my usage. thanks :)
@audun0905 The Sigma 150-500mm is not a bad lens, but for sports I would look into Canon's 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6. It cost just a little more than the Sigma 150-500mm and has a little better f/ values than the sigma's f/5-6.3. You said both sports and bird photography. There are times when you may want that extra focal length for bird photography that the 500mm would give, but for sports in my opinion, in that lens market, Canon's 100-400mm would be a great all around lens for these two things
@audun0905 Canon's 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 was my very first sports lens and I liked it a lot, not the greatest for low light, but for outdoors I could cover the entire field with it. For sports, I have never needed a longer focal length than 400mm but for shooting birds, this is a subject. You have to see what you are going to use the lens for most.
Hey there, I was wondering if you would suggest the Canon 300mm f/4 prime lens for sports photography. I plan on building up a sports portfolio as I want to become a sports photographer when i grow up :)
@Calvinkoolz The Canon 300 f/4 would not be a bad place to start as the lens is not too expensive. The 300 would give you good coverage for most things. It will be great to shoot in the daylight, many time I shoot baseball and football in f/4 during the daylight hours as it gives a little bit of DOF. At night or indoors is where you will really need that 2.8 lens. I would suggest you look into the 70-200 f/2.8 for your first lens. It is a lens I use all the time, just save a little more $.
@767charles The Mark IV is on my list of next purchases. Can't wait to see the improvements and new features. My Mark IIIs are doing good for me right at the moment, I have had no issues with them.
...how much do you get paid to get all of those amazing gears.
