I think it would have worked better if you concentrated on picking out individual notes, rather than trying to get the chords as well. It would have flowed much more nicely, and you'd be able to reach a better tempo.
I've always played it:
Am, Em, F, C (x3)
Am, Em, G, F
Dm, C (x lots)
The Dm/C play on th 5th and 3rd frets for best effect
