  • this exact tone. modern day gear. HOW, PLEASE?

  • wonderful !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • where da beginning of da song????

  • The thing that gets me about Shawn is that his music is so happy. Other fusion guitarists and musicians always seem to make sad, somber stuff, but with Shawn, you could just feel the joy eminating from him. Won't see another like him for a long time, maybe ever.

  • @Kingding6 good point. not self serious! i met him and he was real down to earth and nice, let me in to his show for free, and i got to play for him afterward (and he was impressed!) . all the talk about 'best' this or that (in other comments, not yours) is nonsense though, only egotists think that way. but don't give up hope

  • @jamesedwardtheobald thats awsome, the guy had no ego, just loved making music!

  • @Kingding6 Buckethead is pretty much right there behind Shawn.

  • @UnknownSect333 thats your opinion man, which is fine.

  • @Kingding6 Okay... I wasn't downing Shawn or anything, but him and Bucket were good friends. And there were some things that Buckethead could do that Shawn evidently couldn't. Like in Kaiser Nancarrow.

  • @UnknownSect333 Yes, they were good friends. If we should take anyones opinion here, lets take Buckethead's: "Shawn Lane is the greatest guitar player ever"

  • @Kingding6 Indeed. But I was saying how Buckethead is basically second in command.

  • @UnknownSect333 I might be able to concede that

  • I think I just fucked something..

  • If I ever become a famous guitarist. famous enough to play to millions of people. I would get on stage and put my guitar down and tell them all how they forgot about Shawn Lane and how he was one of the best musicians on earth. Then I would tell them to go home and be entertained by these youtube videos of Shawn. That would the show.

  • il migliore, non ci sarà mai nessuno come lui....la tristezza è che ci abbia lasciato così presto, troppo presto..ci manchi shawn

  • I love watching Shawn Lane play. He put his heart and soul into his guitar and I never had the chance to meet him but his personality shines through his playing :) Rest in Peace, Shawn. A true great!

  • I've been goin through some hard times lately. I'm 19, trying to get a job and god damn am I lonely. This song always gets me through it though. Absolutely stunning. I've yet to find a song to perfect and emotional.

  • Absolutely beautiful song.

  • Ralphie May + Meatloaf + musical god = Shawn Lane

  • Thank you Shawn, for reminding me what guitars are capable of, Rest in Peace man

  • great legato!!!

  • 99,999th view! I feel so honored!!! cheese nips!!! incredible song

  • Shawn was the best!! How I wish you were here..

  • best melody I've heard for ages, great feel

  • Don't talk shit about Shawn Lane. lol

  • That was impressive technically, but it didn't sound that great.

  • @narutorox85 You High?

  • @campion95 Do I have to be to think otherwise? Just felt like he was letting the guitar do all of the work.

  • @narutorox85 what are you talking about . Letting the guitar do the work? Do you think the guitar plays by itself......do you even play guitar?

  • @campion95 My point is it feels like the sound of the guitar is what draws you in. I wasn't a fan of his playing. A song doesn't have to be great technically to be a great song, which is why while songs like this are interesting, they rarely are considered great songs. Look at Smells Like Teen Spirit, it was one of the most basic songs ever, yet it is now considered one of the best songs ever because it wasn't about the guitar, it was about the song. I can't really explain it better than that.

  • @narutorox85 Well Shawn Lane's music is based around the guitar. So the guitar should be the thing to draw you in. I don't think Smells Like Teen Spirit is a good song at all although its considered a "classic"... the guitar wasn't good, the vocals were horrible, the drums were fairly basic and the bass line is the same for nearly all the song.

  • @campion95 And here you show a misunderstanding of what makes a good song versus a technically impressive song. I think we can both agree that this guy is a great guitarist, at least.

  • @narutorox85 i think this sounds beautiful. im not saying nirvana sucks but shawn lane shows how you can make music sound good and paint a picture in someones mind without using lyrics. he tells a story or uses a leitmotif using the instrumentation. Thats what makes him one of my favourite artists. if you dont like his playing or think its just a load of notes then thats fine. but you cannot possibly say that this is bad music. and hes not just a massive shredder, listen to 'epilogue for lisa'.

  • well.....this just might be the single most incredible piece of music ever.

  • shawn lane best guitarist to ever live i dare someone to challenge this statement

  • @dogsoup13

I cant challenge your statement and anyone who does should listen to the lead line starting at 1:50 a few times and repeat as many times as necessary till they get "it"

  • un ange passe.......

    frissons

  • un ange passe.......

  • Unbelievably good phrasing and tone!

  • Tone like a knife through butter, phrasing that would make a plank of wood cry , and enough feel to touch you still to this day . Something is missing from this world R.I.P. Shawn, a Master of artistic and emotional expression!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • It definitely comes down to Shawn's fingers, not his gear, heh. The guy was an alien. In terms of dexterity, he was (and mostly still is) untouchable but beyond that, Shawn wrote wonderful tunes with beautiful melodies and extremely expressive solos. Complete mastery of the instrument backed up by an incredible knowledge and culture of music. RIP, Shawn, you'll never be replaced.

  • Yep... years later it still moves me to tears

  • @CantWaitUntil2012 That's probably true. He was such an amazing musician. I envy his tone.

  • @Som1onu2be I think everyone is envious of his tone. It's so hard to believe he did this with a Holmes Mississippi Bluesmaster amp and that Westbury W-20 tube overdrive which by today's standards is low end equipment. He knew the tone he was after and got it no matter what gear he was using.

  • I did a cover of this tune please check out and let me know what you think.

  • What a wonderful tune. Such a loss.

Also, anyone know Shawn's pickups in this guitar? Bit of a pickup nut myself.

In fact any pre-Air Classics pickup knowledge on Shawn would be amazing; info seems so scarce.

  • @YummyBananaFish i think they were dimarzio and air classic pickups.

  • @gmasterg13 I meant *before* he used Air Classics; I'm assuming the Charvel here has PAF Pros, but that's only my guess.

  • Most beautiful guitar sound ever.

  • I've just realized the cut at 0:49... after two years :) I think it means, that it's impossible to pay attention to anything else, while Shawn is playing. He's my biggest influence beside Richie Kotzen...

  • So far beyond his time :)

Wow were we lucky to have been able to hear his music.

  • My god that outro is so insanely beautiful and terrifying at the same time.

  • RIP SL

  • 0:30 possibly the most beautiful riff ever

  • @MyShawnLaneVideos Brings tears to my eyes, and a feeling I cant really describe I guess everyone has their own flashback/goosebump feeling.. Thanks so much for the uploads, it means so much to me. I was only but a child when shawn was famous in the underground scene but I feel as if I was there the whole time, my generation destroyed music though. But believe me there are people of all ages who enjoy shawn's work. He was such a truly inspiring person. Words cannot describe.

  • lol the first thing my dad said when he saw this video "is that meatloaf?"

  • @speaker3600 Hopefully the second thing he said was "This guy is unbelievably great; where can we go to buy all his stuff?"

  • crying guitar . RIP Shawn

  • Does he seem to have really small hands? Like his picking hand looks smaller than the pickups :s

    Amazing player tho. RIP

  • @creation23 I think his hands just looked really small in proportion to his body, since he was a pretty big guy.

  • @speaker3600 They were actually really small, 7 inches from base of palm to tip of middle finger

  • lost my lunch at 1'51 :-o

  • genious...

  • Aw heck, from now on I declare every day Shawn Lane day. Whattya say boys n girls? God I miss him, technical, fast, emotional, superb phrasing and note selection, man what a loss......Merry Christmas to the Lane family, sure he's playin for Jesus as we speak.

  • Shawn Lane says "Get you back"

I said "i wish we can get you back"

  • @09kitty23 we all want him back man. love this guy.

  • Was the Charvel custom built for Shawn?

  • @deegnified1 No, but I THINK his ghostrider was

  • 1:51 to 2:15

    ...need new pants.

  • Fuck!

  • I practically cry every time i hear that insane legato-arpeggio-string-skipping lick. I could practice 12 h a day and never get that one down. I had the thrill of meeting and talking to Shawn at Wetlands once, and he was one class act, one of the greatest guitar/musicians of our time. RIP, buddy!

  • I only wish it lasts longer.

  • @bmiha Yeah it's a shame, though i've uploaded many much longer live versions of Shawn playing this tune. :)

  • 1:52 to the end is incredible, but the last four notes are so exciting that they darken the rest of the song

  • Look at that smile on his face @ 0:32 ...That's emotion if I've ever seen it...Shit, everything Shawn Lane plays has emotion in it...Even his blistering fast solos.

  • Man... Get You Back is such a "Roof Down" song

    R.I.P Shawn

  • The music world truly lost a master when Shawn Lane passed, my hope is that he is riffing in God's stellar band!

    Timothy

    :o)

  • He just makes going into what is a very easygoing song into a facemeltingly fast solo look so natural.

  • Sometimes magic just came into the world for a while, to show us something beyond the conventional stuff and, sadly, to be misunderstood, a genius like Shawn Lane could gave so much more tho this world...but maybe the genius come to the earth to be remembered, not to be honored when they are alive...

    thanks for this beautiful music...

  • can't get over that right hand either

  • that guitar is amazing, godamnit S.L wrecks!!!!!

  • why do great people always die!!!???? it's annoying, it's like death comes and says "hey, you're to good for this place man, come with me", and the snatches 'em off of us, its what makes life worth it

  • @RockwithaVengance you dont get it, do you?

To die is a thing all people must and will do.

Great people... rubbish people... all the same,

    death equals all.

Yes, is a shame when people with so much to express goes away prematurely,

if is that what you meant :P

  • too good.

  • One of my favorite guitarists of all time. So great to be able to see these videos

  • Always sends shivers down my spine. So heartfelt and beautiful. This amazing piece of music was the first thing I ever heard from Shawn, still one of my top 5 pieces ever, if not the top one. Shawn's tone and vibrato is so warm and singing in this song, that his guitar sounds almost like a human voice. A shame a lot of people think Shawn was all about the guitar shredding, he really was all about the music, just an unbelievable talent, playing straight from the heart. He is truly missed.

  • Man, just look at him, He looks so happy. Makes me sad just to think that a great man like him is gone. He really loved what he did. R.I.P Shawn Lane You will never be forgotten.

  • Shawn you ARE magic!

  • Lyricism! Lyricism! Lyricism! Shawn could noodle with the best of them, but work like this show that there was always much....much more in his heart. Namaste.

  • This is the single greatest guitar performance I haver ever seen.

  • @giogipogi Agreed! This is amazing!

  • With Shawn Lane, every note is the root note.

    :O

  • shawn lane ftw.

  • BETTER THAN THE ALBUM VERSION

Shawn, you haunted my imagination with the tales I heard of your playing and exceeded my demands with your heart and soul....

  • FUCK YEAH!

  • a 'classical' electric guitarist - such immaculate playing - lane purportedly hated practicing as well...

  • i love the drummer's fills especially the thrity second triplets

  • The Sound of Steve Vai and Paul Gilbert for Sure is Perfect and Beautiful

but their sound does not let me Fight the Tears in my Eyes like This song i guess itsthe part from 0 : 45 to 1 : 01 and of couse fhe Fun written in Shawns Face playin this Song

Ah Sigh Music is the Best

  • Too bad the DVD ordering is temporarily out, Shawn is a pure talent!

  • simply incredible

  • does anyone know where his Charvel 750xl is now? i like him better in charvel than vigier..

  • @09kitty23 Apparently this guitar is lost, no-one knows where it is. That may mean it was sold at a pawn show and was never recovered. :-(

  • @MyShawnLaneVideos oh my god..i don't think it was pawned if you ask me.. being stolen is more likely to happened.. that guitar DESERVES to be in a Museum or some sort.

  • @09kitty23 I agree it should be in a museum or something, but sadly it's true. :-( ..... Shawn had VERY little money, and would often end up pawning his gear... some things he would manage to recover, other things sadly not. :-(

  • @MyShawnLaneVideos that is ashame... of all the guitars that has ever been wield'd by any musicians.. that guitar really deserves to be in the Hall of Fame

  • @MyShawnLaneVideos

Shawn had very little money and Nickle Back are millionaires-Wheres the justice in this idiot world?

  • @MyShawnLaneVideos What about his endorsements?

  • @MyShawnLaneVideos i think is fucked up how hes one of the greatest musicians ever and he was struggling money-wise. people suck nowadays

  • @MyShawnLaneVideos if I recall correctly, I read somewhere that the person who has it wishes to sell it. Think it was 12.5 grand he was asking.

Don't think Lane ever got anything near that amount for it...

  • @slicer789 Nevermind, don't think that is the Charvel

  • @slicer789 Yeah, that was his Ghostrider guitar

  • @MyShawnLaneVideos Well screw that. I say we track the Charvel down!

  • @bearfeymous Shawn's unique, one off "Powers of Ten" Ibanez guitar (based on the Ghostrider) has been put on sale, by the guy who's been holding onto it all these years, for $12,500. That's a lot cheaper than the $100,000 he put it on eBay for a few years ago. I sooooo wish i could afford to buy that to give it to Shawn's daughter Ashley!

  • @MyShawnLaneVideos Shyyyyyooot man. I say we all pitch in and buy it for Ashley to remember her dad!

  • @bearfeymous Honestly, that's not a bad idea. I'd pitch in a few dollars for that.

  • @istillbowlverywell It's actually just been bought.... by a long time Shawn fan.

  • @MyShawnLaneVideos

    :O

    A friend?

  • @MyShawnLaneVideos Who is this friend? His he famous or do you just know him? Would he be willing to sell it? I mean, i can't buy it, as i have no money, but i'm a Shawn's fan. I discovered Shawn in a video in Youtube some time ago, couple of months and since then i have been hooked on his music. Mostly Powers of Ten. That's one of my favorite albums, along with Elegant Gypsy (Al di Meola) and Orchid (Opeth). I can't imagine the face of the guy who bought the guitar when it arrived. Lucky guy!

  • @mesamarshall Hi. It was a guy who has been posting at the Shawn Lane forum for years now, i know he's a true fan and seems like it's in good hands!.... obviously the person i would 'most' like the guitar to be with is Shawn's daughter, but at least it's with someone who i know will take very good care of it, rather than it ending up with someone who doesn't appreciate Shawn.

  • @09kitty23 His guitar truly deserves to be in his grave, but for sure all of Shawn's album's deserve go to in a Museum ! (My personal opinion)

  • @09kitty23 some crazed fan tried to sell it for $100,000 on eBay awhile back so it definitely didn't end up where it should have

  • @brandon5pennies remember the guitar has been mass produced for a short period of time.. its probably just a charvel with same series and same color.. i doubt that's shawn's.. but then again possible

  • @09kitty23 Shouldn't it be stuck in a rock somewhere sacred near a lake waiting for the right heir to claim her?

  • @MyShawnLaneVideos I like to think it made it's way into the hands of a young aspiring musician. At least I hope :)

  • @09kitty23 actually i wasn't thinking correctly i meant his Ibanez ghostrider was on eBay for $100,000 i know it was his because it was the only 24 fret ghostrider with all the features his had yeah the Charvel i have no idea what happened to it

  • You're something Far Beyond Godlike ... RIP :)

  • HOW THE HELL DO YOU GET THAT TONE?????

  • @Som1onu2be ... with a little bit of 'Magic'! ;-)

  • @Som1onu2be The effects themselves are just a little bit of chorus and delay. Most of the tone comes from how he uses the bar and his picking/fingering style. He's rarely alternate picking; using a ton of complicated legato/slide techniques. And, of course as it was all ready said, sprinkle some magic on the fretboard and you're ready to go.

  • @Som1onu2be Four amps set on different levels on delay, "quadraphonic sound"

  • @Som1onu2be : a combination of guitar.. pickups... amp...preamps... and double looping...

He used high output tube amps and that is where alot of his tone comes from

  • @PAULgilbertFAN93 Oh? I need a tube amp then. I am in love with Shawn Lane's tone!

  • @Som1onu2be Yep, if you want great tone tubes are the only way to go my friend. A ton of it is finger tone, but if you want to get something like this use a marshall or something else british, then crank the mids and put the gain on a medium setting. It also helps if you use a strat type guitar with a humbucker in the bridge

  • @otherrandomhero I just bought a Marshall! It was before you replied, but I am glad it worked out haha. Thanks for the advice!

  • @otherrandomhero

Actually, Shawn didn't use tube amps here. His tone in this video came from his "Holmes" amplifiers which have no tubes in them. He used a Tube pedal for his distortion though.

  • @otherrandomhero wrong! actually a les paul would suit best. the charvel 750xl that he is using has the same scalelength as a les paul and the air classic pickups are ade to sound like oldschool p90¨s even he vigier models are more a les paul than a strat. the only thing that they have in comon is the shape. fred ut!

  • @Som1onu2be he took the tone and made it his own. only shawn could do that.

  • @gmasterg13 I know! God his tone is so pure and amazing though. I really want his hands lol

  • @Som1onu2be his hands were the other part of his tone.

find your own style and try and make it your own sound brother.. good luck.

  • @gmasterg13 Thank you!

  • @Som1onu2be gear plays a big part but in the end the majority of it is in the fingers :-)

  • A guitar wizard. He casts spells with his notes.

  • @esgimasd Nice one!! :-)

  • I simply cannot fathom anything he does. It's so incredibly spellbinding I think I might shed the first tear i've ever shed in 10 years.

btw, can anyone please tell the key and or scale he's using for this song? thank you very much

  • @3ucketheadJuggal0 Before the breakup @ 0.58 it's in Emajor, and then goes over into Amajor. don't know what kind of scales though, they sound good!

    hope that helps a bit

  • @Nilli4rock Yes, thank you so much!

  • I want to know which 3 pricks gave this video a thumbs down! Really?

If it was a mistake it is forgiven, but if not, don't watch a Shawn Lane video when you are a tree-hugging emo pixie.

  • I wish I could get you back Shawn Lane

  • @speaker3600 :`-(

  • Does anyone have the guthrie tab to this?

I could really use it to clear up some parts I can't quite hear.

  • @djziggurat I do

  • @Nilli4rock

I thought I should've asked you, it's alright though, lanevideos sent it already, he usually comes to the rescue lol

  • @djziggurat that's allright :)

  • Incredible

  • Comment removed

  • I've never heard Shawn in such a lyrical context. He's really expressive and melodic. I really need to give this guy another listen.

  • @ThePathofHavoc I reccomend anything hes done with Jonas Hellborg. They venture into some weird indian stuff that requires you to invest time, but extremely rewarding if you do.

  • @Kingding6 That sounds great. I'm gonna check that out. Thanks a lot for pointing that out.

  • @ThePathofHavoc My Pleasure

  • this song is beautiful and sad at the same time, pretty magic stuff, RIP shawn

  • @TheBanyanEmperor Actualy he himself said he was born to do this and he stopped developing his technique by some crazy age like 13 or 14.

  • fuck yeah! shawn lane!

  • LOL!! :-D

  • i remember a while ago i watched one of his videos and it was just ridiculous legato really fast and i thought he was shit.......... i stand corrected.

  • So happy. I only wish to grow into a guitarist as great as Mr. Lane.

  • Greatest guitarist to walk the planet.....best technique...tone...fastest,,,, best phrasing...best melodies......one and only

  • :33-:45 Just pure joy on Shawn's face.

He was livin' the dream right there...

  • Exactly!!... Pure happiness!!

  • Excellent drummer and backline

  • sorry hitting the keys too fast! .typo's to ad

there's a little eric johnson in there.

rippingtons, and chick corea. shawn mastered the frettboard.a true talent and a great piano player also.

  • @gmasterg13 Wonder if he had any children?
