  • I liked Reagan, I guess; I like him even better now that he's dead.

  • Oh this is to the tune of the British patriotic hymn "Jerusalem." Lovely.

  • JTB, so your grandfather wasn't too swift either. Speaking of trolls, how have you been?

  • JTB, your extreme dementia has proven my point.

  • @doothless You remind me of what my grandfather used to call the Northern end of a South-bound horse....with pretty much the same grace and utility. Go find another place to troll....

  • JTB, I wholeheartedly agree; thus, the reason for my comment.

  • @doothless Your obtuseness has proved my point.

  • God, I miss this man.

  • I'm sure the voice parts are printed, but; is the organ part printed or is it one of those "exultate" moments and incredible organist has. BRAVO for you.. the often unsung hero (not mentiend in the credits).

  • @Mosquimoyo The organ part sounds to me very much like Parry's original setting - pretty much all of the embellishments are in the vocal parts.

  • Absolutely stunning I must say. It was a little strange however seeing the choirmaster stepping side to side so much.

  • chills running up and down back whole way through.

  • The last thing we need in the White House is another Reagan. What short memories some have!

  • @doothless Small minds are a worse plague than are short memories.

  • Best President America ever had. I like he destroyed that air traffic controllers union when they went on strike. He and Bush Sr ended the cold war. And he championed free market principles. A good Christian and lead the War on Drugs. RIP Ronald Reagan. One of my favorite Presidents.

  • @Helotes420 He should be hung for treason and they can name the airport in Libya after him in memorial, I think that's a better idea.

  • Beautiful adaptation of a timeless tune. Altogether fitting. In my youthful ignorance I didn't appreciate him, or agree with his politics. As I have aged...he has gotten wiser. A great man and the best President this country has ever had. Rest well.

  • Wonderful hymn and performance for a good human being. However, I never agreed with his politics and never will. I wish his soul well.

  • Amen to that. Ronny must be looking down at us in tears.

  • This has to be the most perfect hymn ever written! At least musically.

  • Im sure President Reagan was a wonderful man and god rest his soul but how can Americans justify changing the words to an English hymn for this, its disrepectful to all the English men and women to whom this song means so much. R.I.P PR.

  • I absolutely love the way this was sung and the swell of the organ.

  • @ticoguy05 Yeah, that organ is swell. It's really great.

  • @Cipher1928 Positively powerful.

  • @Cipher1928 If it isn't, you can always pedal it...but I'm positiv-ly preaching to the choir here...

    ;-)

  • @Organsk8er I'm observing from the gallery that the humor is reaching a cresendo...

  • The Illuminati, who sold their souls for Lucifer, have an obligation to teach the world the wrong names of the Trinity. The purpose of this is so you condemn yourself upon judgment. When Christ asks "Who do you say that I am?" make sure and tell others to answer, :"You are God."

If you give the Illuminati answer, "You are the son of a talking fire (the Lord)," you will quickly find out what Freemasonry has done to you and you will have an eternity to think about it. fatimamovement d o t c o m

  • I would like to know what music soldiers played with hornpipe during the funeral march of Mr. President Reagan.

  • Trying to replace Blake's mystical lyric is simply funny. This insipid lyric is typical for external locus of control swishiness - the opposite of what Reagan brought to his life and work.

  • I know this is a serious video, but in the sprit of laughter and merryment Ronald Reagan is experiencing right now, I just wan't to say HEY LOOK ITS FDR @ 2:46!

  • @TheProudAmerican777 FDR looks pretty good.

  • @mkestler90 Erik Suter is the organist.

  • Does anyone know who the organist is?

  • It's weird to hear a hymn at the funeral of an American Politician set to the tune of England's anthem.

It is a great tune though.

  • @Surlish I'm afraid this tune is not "England's anthem" (which is "God save the queen"). The tune is indeed British, as are many of the hymn tunes sung in the US>

  • @canonscottage

England doesn't have its own national anthem. Three pieces of music are used for its anthem, "God Save the Queen", "Land of Hope and Glory", and "Jerusalem" (which is the same tune as the hymn in this video).

"God Save the Queen" is the national anthem of the United Kingdom.

  • @Surlish I'm afraid this tune is not "England's anthem" (which is "God save the queen"). The tune is indeed British, as are many of the hymn tunes sung in the US.

  • @canonscottage - Not sure why you're afraid, but you sadly wrong. "God Save the Queen" is the anthem of the United Kingdom of Great Britain & Northern Ireland - England has no official anthem, but used Jerusalem as their anthem at the Commonwealth Games.

  • What hymn tune is this?

  • @64ftContraBombarde - It says in the description. This is the tune of Jerusalem by Hubert Parry.

  • @64ftContraBombarde The tune is "Jerusalem."

  • An interesting way of fitting new lyrics onto old tunes - this was 'And did those feet in ancient time'

  • That sounded so beautiful it gave me an orgasm and a wet spot in my pants.....

  • WTH. Its 3 years after and people are STILL arguing? If you MUST argue, argue on an internet forum tho man. This is a memorial video. How disrespectful...

  • Absolutely gorgeous! RIP, Mr. Reagan. Not sure why the Bill Clinton is smiling at 3:37 though.

  • Question (asking for information, not complaining) Why do the choir members get to have the music right in front of them? I've been in plenty of choirs and we always had to memorize everything.

  • @Ampersandra don't know exactly, but one thing to consider is that this is not a "performance," it's worship.

  • @jtbruce Good point, + it's about a loss. It's not what I'm used to, but w/the same intention. I was raised Southern Gospel, which I didn't fully realize till I went North, where no one played tamborine. To me, church music just sorta always demanded 1 or 2 ppl in the congregation playing their tamborines along with the music. You should have seen the surprise when I did it. Most songs were so slow, you couldn't really use it, but where I go now, there's usu 3 or 4 going at the same time.

  • @Ampersandra While I can still sing this piece from memory given the number of times we rehearsed it for the two days prior to the funeral, it is simply not the tradition for Anglican choirs to sing from memory for services.

  • @ceoltoir75 Well... that makes perfect sense. Like the Christmas decorations of carolers always holding up their music books. Maybe that's where they got it from, that church.

    (Still pondering jtbruce's reply)

  • @Ampersandra : Choirs in Anglican churches which espouse traditional music sing an enormous amount of music for each service: anywhere from four to six movements of a Mass setting, plus motet/anthem, and in some churches the plainchant propers: Morning/Evening Prayer involve one or two cantcles, an anthem, often rather lengthy, as well as the psalms proper for the day. Memorisation, while certainly useful - even helpful - is not realistic with this quantity of music.

  • @wmcarton Are the choir members volunteers? I think if I was paid to practice 8 hours a day, plus sing on the weekends, I'd probably be able to memorize everything after a while. If I were singing in a voluntary capacity, I might NOT be able to dedicate the time required to recall all the music.

  • @Ampersandra The trebles (sopranos) go to the boys' and girls' boarding schools on the cathedral grounds. Normally, the boys and girls are in separate choirs and sing together only for special occasions like this. The men (altos, tenors, and basses) are professional. These choirs sing several services a week. As Wmcarton says, they go through heaps of music every year. This is the way things should be done (except for the conductor so indiscreetly front and center!)

  • America's "best" President? If that be the case, God help us!

  • Is this glorious arrangement of this glorious hymn published anywhere?

  • @Organsk8er This arrangement (Michael McCarthy) is available from Alfred Publishing.

  • this performance is chillingly amazing!

  • President Reagan.. Americas' best President, he truly loved America. we need him now

  • Well done, thou good and faithful servant.

  • Absolutely beautiful and fitting for President Ronald Reagan.

  • Jerusalem!

  • If you go to a funeral to respect a man, must you also disrespect another man who holds or did hold the same office? If you visit the White House, the President's home, do you make crappy comments about Presidents that you don't like? There are times and places to be on your best behavior and show respect. R E S P E C T !

  • Whenever I hear something regarding President Reagan on the news or past radio voice clips of him, I am always moved to tears. I dearly adored that man and everything he did to save this nation from its then heavy tax burden, the Soviet Threat and liberal injustice in the courts. I will never forget that man. I was in college at the time Reagan was President and I actually got to meet him in person. What a wonderful human being he was! Nancy was also a gracious first lady, too.

  • @Marksnotebook If you have the need to shed some more tears please search "President Ronald Reagan's Speech at Point-du-Hoc, Normandy "

  • @Marksnotebook apprently you are gay, own up to it

  • O Brother! There are some ignorant people responding to this beautiful service of remembrance for a great man, who loved this country and did what he thought best. Look at the crappy job Obama is doing!!! I wish we had a "Reagan" now to help us!

  • @MrBrysonD fuck me, an idiot yank that can spell, still a fuckwit though

  • Ding dong, the warlock is dead

    which old warlock

    the wicked warlock

ding dong the wicked warlock is dead.

  • @ItsChillyBrrr You're a vile hatemonger.

    Begone FOOL!

  • If you like this hymn, check out the lesser-known hymn titled "There is love vast as the ocean".

  • Someone somewhere has forgotten the oath and maybe the Constitution

"I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States

  • Comment removed

  • A superb arrangement, and the kind of music I could listen to all day.I have the greatest admiration for what Michael McCarthy does with this hymn, and what this choir continues to achieve

  • Ronald Reagan was an admirer of the film "Chariots of Fire." This hymn was sung in the last scene of that movie, at the funeral of Harold Abrahams. Also, one of the speakers at Reagan's funeral recited the same biblical verse (Isaiah 40:31) that Eric Liddle, was shown citing in the film, in a church service in Paris:

"But those who wait on the Lord

    Shall renew their strength;

They shall mount up with wings like eagles,

They shall run and not be weary,

They shall walk and not faint."

  • Is anyone else somewhat surprised at this as a choice of hymn? It's an arrangement of "Jerusalem" / "And did those feet in ancient time" by Hubert Parry, an English composer. Whilst I don't find that strange, I do find it odd seeing that he wrote it specifically for a poem about building heaven in England (specifically by name several times). For an American (ex-)President's funeral I would have thought the extreme patriot nuts would have taken issue with this, no?

  • It is however a lovely song and sung extremely well here

  • The extreme patriot nuts (mostly southern redneck idiots) wouldn't know the difference. It's the same with "My Country Tis' of Thee", no one realizes it was originally "God Save the Queen".

  • Winston Churchill had the 'Battle Hymn of the Republic' at his funeral -- an American song.

Moreover, the Americans understand that the culture of their nation is primarily determined by the customs of Britannia. They study British history in their schools, they have British Protestant Christianity en masse, and they carry on Classic British Liberalism -- the liberalism of the English Civil Wars and Locke.

That Jerusalem was sung at Reagan's funeral is therefore not surprising.

  • @churchillwinstonspen But Churchhill was half American! :-)

  • And Reagan is from English stock. What is your point?

  • Obviously I was referring to your point below and the choice of hymn tunes. The late President was of Irish stock, thats well documented and he often referred to it himself.

  • He is actually of both English and Irish stock. In my book, there is no difference. They are both British.

  • If you really want to go into it, his grandmother was also of part Scottish ancestry (other being English)! Looks like 3 of the 4 parts of Great Britain mixed to produce old Ronald Reagan!

  • @churchillwinstonspen Lol, like most Americans! Just that when he visited Ireland he claimed to be Irish! Anyways, congrats on writing a biog of a President!

  • Well, that was my point. Reagan has an English anthem at his funeral due to the influence of British culture on America.

  • @churchillwinstonspen Actually, Rev. Jay Danforth, former Senator and an Episcopal priest performed the service, he may have had some influence in picking some of the music, Or it could have been in commemoration to his close ties to the British & Lady Margaret Thatcher!

    .........................

  • Geesh.. We need Reagan now, more than ever.. I'd vote for his dead corpse over what we have in DC now..

  • @hwoods01 Truly morbid, but spot on. You echo my sentiments exactly. Cheers!

  • Absolutely no doubt, this particular text is entirely appropriate for the occasion. So typical of Episcopalians!

  • OMG! Is Reagan dead????

  • Yes, for five years.

  • yes he's been dead for 5 years

  • May Ronald Reagan rest in the Temple of the Lord at the divine celestial table, next to his and our Lord and Savior, whom he was a fierceful servant!

Thank you God for giving us our brother Ronald Wilson Reagan, and thank you for his government, for he was a tool used by Thee to break the marxism-leninism chains of slavery. Through him, oh Lord, You acted and brought freedom and hope for brighter future to many generations to come, all around the world.

Blessed be for being Thy tool

    Amém

  • Reagan was a great President. His moral clarity above all makes him shine out from others.

Yet we must accept that Reagan's economic policies have not been a total success. The national debt expanded exponentially under Reagan, and has expanded every year since except for 2000 and 2001. Reagan established tax cuts coupled with increased spending.

Also, Reagan's western free markets have created new super powers such as China and India. These are a threat.

  • @alonelychild Mark says it is amazing how God works in so many ways we don't always understand. But this man, Reagan, was certainly used by God and the man, Reagan, did many great things for our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. We must never forget this man and what made him do what he did, which was good from God. He truly believed it. Above all else, he acted upon it. We must never give up. Never!

  • @alonelychild ke ?

  • @alonelychild AMEN and well put.

  • never heard it to these silly words before, they should have sung it to the origional words, ...And Did Those Feet in Ancient Times

  • Personally, I find the text (used here) flawlessly beautiful. On the other hand...I have to admit some curiosity re: those ancient feer. (LOL)

  • Why can't I go to any video like this without seeing this pointless arguing in the comments section? Shut up and enjoy the music, or become a politician.

  • While I may have chosen different words, I *do* entirely agree, ("Shut up and enjoy the music"). :-)

  • @wellwell395 Actually my last reply wasn't satisfying enough for me. Take your dumbass, moronic responses you miserable, worthless piece of trash, and shove them up your ass. When that's done, reach your arm down into your intestines, grab on to something, and pull. Because you can be more productive to the universe spilling your own guts than you ever could be doing anything else. Drop dead, you shithead.

  • @TheMaestro42 said with all the originality one would expect of a yank, get cunted

  • @wellwell395 Not original enough? How about this time, you take a spoon, and slowly remove each of your eyeballs. Next, shove them up your rectum, and try and see if you can figure out what's clogging your ass. Burn in hell, dickwad. And by the way, you're a disgrace to Australians everywhere. There will be no further responses.

  • @TheMaestro42 please don;t get angry it spoils the wonderful atmosphere created by this music

  • @TheMaestro42 please don't be angry, relax and enjoy the funeral

  • Quelle musique magnifique.

De France où la musique est si merdique à l'église, voilà qui fait du bien !

  • He saw the country through a very difficult and precarious time with the Cold War, where both sides had nukes. That alone is worthy of this tribute.

Was Regan perfect? Not at all. But he was a good president in most regards. One of the best our country has had.

I don't think there was ever a minute that he didn't do what he believed in his heart was the right thing, though I think he was in some things misguided, as in economic policy and gay rights.

  • Today is the 5th Anniversary of President Reagan's Death - thanks for posting this and making me cry!

  • So beautiful - thanks for posting. 5*'s

  • It may sound a bit shallow, but this is why I am a die hard Episcopalian. In nearly every town across the US, the nearest Episcopal Church will likely have the best music and liturgy in the area. Of course, none better than our National Cathedral. Thank you so much for posting this truly spectacular offering from the Cathedral Choir and Canon Organist-choirmaster.

  • How true - the best music and liturgy at an Episcopal church.

  • This has always been my experience. Second to none!

  • I agree that Episcopalians have the best music of practically any church out there but you guys have to work on that little homosexual thing going on in your church. You're losing your credibility as a legitimate Christian denomination over it.

  • Every denomination has a "little homosexual 'problem'", it's just that we Episcopalians are honest about and DON'T have a problem with it!!!!

  • I couldn't agree more--and as a proud, "out" gay man who is also an active Episcopalian I am so grateful that the sign out front means it when it says "The Episcopal Church Welcomes You."

  • Loving and accepting our gay brothers and sisters, as God loves and accepts us all, is one more reason I'm gald to be Episcopalian!

  • Music- ABSOLUTELY.

No, we need to be open to and accepting of homosexual people. They are just simply the way they are. They often live lives of dedication to their partners. They are often godparents to married couples' children. They love and serve the church with selflessness and dignity. They are happy in that state. Happier than most. It's not your place to bash them or to refuse to tolerate them being who they are.

Episcopalians live by the great commandment. We see tolerance as love.

  • Comment removed

  • We stopped seeing homosexuality as sinful. We don't see it as a disorder. Those of us who are straight don't see any reason to force them to be like us. It isn't who God made them to be.

  • What about these verses?

Lev 20:13 If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable.

Rom 1:26 For this reason God gave them over to dishonorable passions. The men were inflamed in their passions for one another. Men committed shameless acts with men and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.

I Corinthians 5:1 It is reported that sexual immorality exists among you, the kind of immorality that is not permitted.

  • You would also summarily dismiss evolution in the face of overwhelming evidence, too, right. There aren't a lot of creationists in the Episcopal Church.

Episcopalians do not all see the Bible in the same way you do. We believe that scrpiture, church tradition, reason, and experience must be used together to make decisions.

That doesn't mean you're wrong. I just don't think you hold the monopoly on being right.

  • Ugh, it's stuff like this that makes me want to get out of the Episcopal Church. I'm so tired of it. Everyone talks about using Scripture, reason, and tradition, and yet the Episcopal Church is throwing out all three!

And why are we having this discussion anyway? Just enjoy the music, love the God it speaks of, and remember the man whose memory it commemorates.

  • One of the hallmarks of the Episcopal Church is that we believe in the concept of plurality of opinions. Where your integration of scripture, tradition, reason, and experience tells you that gays and lesbians should not be tolerated in the church, there are MANY others, including myself) whose integration of these things (and this straight man's life experiences of knowing many homosexual people) tells them otherwise. You're opinion is valid. Just respect that of others who don't share it.

  • What a beautiful statement. As a gay man, and a cradle Episcopalian, I wish everyone had your maturity of spirit and confident intellectual humility.

It breaks my heart to see what is happening to the Anglican communion. I wish everyone had your demeanor.....

  • No one is stopping you from joining the ACNA, after all it's there for those who want to "LIVE IN THE PAST",..the Father Knows Best sudo past that NEVER happened ....Who Are You Listening To?

  • yeah right , in the beginning nothing exploded, and here we are...

    thats real science...

  • My son and his boy choir classmates are all in this video.

    St. Albans Class of 2010

  • You should be very proud of them. This was beautifully done. The choir of Men and Boys is a grand tradition.

  • The Regan funeral had the most beautiful music and this piece was awesome; it sounded like a choir of angels were singing.

  • Mr. McCarthy has taken this beautiful hymn to a new level. The outstanding choir, and beautiful organ stir emotions of all kinds in all people. I hope that Mr. McCarthy will continue his great arrangements of these wonderful hymns.

  • Actually, it would be ma'am/miss. I am not a male in this video... But this was an arrangement done by Michael McCarthy specifically for the service. Mike was so-so about it, he's never really proud of his work at least when we rehearse it but personally, I found the setting to really compliment the text and the funeral.

  • ah, my apologies miss...I was looking at the shot right before 30 secs and saw the man with glasses on, thought that was you. Superb job though!

  • oh i take no offense at all. its understandable. and thank you. i direct all compliments to Mike though. he's amazing.

  • I AM IN THIS! at 30 seconds with the glasses in the middle of the row. jeez i look bored... that was not the case though. this was a really touching service.

  • Amazing song, very well done sir. I've never heard this song to the tune of Jerusalem, was it done specially for Reagan's funeral?

  • To My Commander in Chief,Rest in Peace Sir.

  • this hymn sounds very similar to the hymn Jersulam by William Blake.

  • a rare view of Erik Suter at the console of the Great Organ

  • this is a very nice piece
