Great video, and impressive boat handling. But I seriously doubt that that wind speed is anywhere near 85 knots. And incidentally force 11 is defined as winds in the range 56-63 knots.
That is a Pilot ship. It must be 65' long. Not really out in a storm--she is delivering or returning from delivering a pilot to a ship entering or leaving a major port.
@RMR2ENG Yes this is Atlantida Azul, she is now operating in her home port of Sines, Portugal for the last two and a half years, this video was during sea trials in Ireland just after she was built.
I have no idea why, but everytime I'm watching this kind of videoclips all i long for is to be out there on the stormy oeceans. It's like I'm watching home at a youtube clip. I must be crazy or something. *lol*
Boy oh boy he was a cool son of a gun, purposely letting her wallow broadside on to those big haireys at 3.04" before he took her out! I can just hear him telling the Pilot etc, there you are, did I not tell you, not a problem, she could sit there all day!
frankwildcat, I would like to talk to you, but I want you to get my contact info off of my youtube video: called "You'll Get Swamped" in short, I might want to use some of your actual footage in a movie documentary we are working on. I am Bob Brown
i always wanted to build a scale remote control boat like this,in my country seas are rarely calm so with this type of hull with counterweight at the very bottom i will have no problem even if it capsize
Been at sea as an engineer for many years but still loved watching this. Some good surfing going on there , question - did she broach or was she steered deliberately to starboard like that?
The Interceptor has an extreme keel design to be able to have that much steering control in those conditions ,nice bow flareing to but in 20' seas its going to get a bit wet .
I really dont know what is on the pilot's mind... i love to learn the skill, coz i myself have my own a boat, but never encounter such actions.. Great handling and a very good video.. just wonder how irt was shot... wish i can joint and share the experience..
you know frank, just a thought. these vids would be a hundred times better with an HD camera. The HD cameras show so much better depth than standard cams. I know these videos do know justice to how big those seas really are. If you watch deadliest catch in hd the seas look so much bigger and closer to what they are seeing than if you watch it in standard def.....
The problem with HD is the resulting file size, trying to upload on to you tube would be difficult and latter viewing with low grade broadband would be slow and intermitent, also at the screen size of you tube i do not think any differance in quality would be noticable, its different with a 40" plasma screen, where you would see the difference.
I don't agree. You can see a big difference with high def original footage. The viewer can also opt-in if they have the bandwidth. Anyway, thanks for the vid!
@frankwildcat No there is a huge difference in wuality seen on youtube videos. I render and upload HD videos to youtube no problem, if someone with a slower internet can't load it they have the option to lower the quality down to 480p, 360p, etc...
I thought it strange that a boat with a keel and also being a pilot boat was not self righting. Sorry Frank but their website states that they are self righting boats. Even if the keel starts at midships is still should self right in rough seas if all is secure.
Hi, they can be built inherantly self righting due to the Buoyancy of the superstructure preventing her staying inverted after a dynamic roll over, but the boat has to be built with anti flooding air intakes and other mods etc, this particular boat was not speced as self righting. Would she have recovered from a roll? probably, but i didn't particuarly fancy finding out on this day!
Thank You for going threw the trouble of making these videos. I truly love to watch these rough water videos as I do this myself on a lower level. Please keep the videos coming, you do a great job. I truly appreciate you making these videos for all of us to watch.....Thanks again.......
A keeled boat works better in the rough or even in general because it helps the boat track through the water. Having just a hull that just meets at a V is like a cork hence your 180 spin. Most work boats are designed to right themselves if they roll so they were in no real danger from going down the wave like that.
I have to disagree, this boat has a full keel, which can help tracking in rough seas, but the deep V hull is of equal importance. In this case though the turn was to avoid a channel buoy and to stay in camera range. In fact this boat is not self righting, so care was needed in these seas.
lucky he did breach when he was going down the wave like that, i work on a 47ft jetboat and that happened to us, luckily we have no keel and did a 180!!
The conditions were exactly like this the first time i tried kiteboarding. It was funner going downhill but it looks like this guy is having an easier time going uphill. laydenzer That must have been fun in your 28 foot aluminum!!!!
It's a pilot boat, right? It must be enough of a challenge just staying upright in conditions like that, but don't they also have to come alongside a cargo ship, so that someone can jump on to a rope ladder and climb 40 feet up the side without getting killed? Scary job, that :-)
For such 'little' boats, those things seem to be able to handle that stuff better than a big shod does. And kudos to the music selection... Xpander by Sasha.
Haha, love the part at about 2:20 when he seems to be just 'surfing' the boat on the waves. If I didn't know better, I'd say he's even having fun out there. Haha.
wow this guy knows his stuff, like he's just playin in the waves. i experienced ocean weather like that in a 28ft aluminum 12 passenger speed boat with twin 225 mercs, it was pitch black out, winds gusting 65-70 knots. needless to say the pucker factor was extremely high, i learned to trust the skippers who pilot boats for a living everyday in all weather situations.nothing but respect for them.
They MUST have bow thrusters to turn in the trough like tha. All my boaties say never do it, it's suicide! But those little beauties are built for it.
I don't know much about the ways of the ocean, but I do know a lot about whitewater boating in rivers. When I look at this I think, "wow, what a boat" and "wow, what a captain".
This is probably one of the best rough weather videos on you tube, and the fact that they were deliberately taking the boat out into these extreame conditions says a lot about the confidence they had in the boats abilities. Conditions certainly were hurricane force. The quality of the footage was simply excellent.
All I wonder about is how or what type boat had to take pilots off or put them on about 100 years ago. In these type conditions, I would love to nkow how they did it. My complements and hope to get back to ride again. Tell Michael Coleman
