At that time it was indeed revolutionary to use a capacitive display. (Actually only Apple had enough money to invest it in factories for exclusive, cheaply bought products.)
But today, both our needs and technology has advanced to the point of both active digitizer pen and touch. I think it will be announced as a great feature by Apple too, however I guess the styluses will cost like 79 USD. ;)
@iAppleseedy I think his point was that Steve Jobs claimed Apple invented multi-touch, when in reality they had brought US military designs to the portable market. Jobs will always refer to their work as having brought multi-touch to the market, after this press conference, so it was likely a slip-of-the-tongue.
@zhoulingyu They did invent it (or so I think). There have been many other touch sensitive surfaces but they can only use 1 finger or other object on the screen at the same time. Apple invented a way to have more than 1 finger touching the screen at the same time.
@pingguo2 Well, you are right to say Apple did not "invent" the such technology. On the other hand, they did win the patents for the technology, meaning they can say and do anything they want with it, because it is now theirs. This means stating they invented it isn't illegal or anything, and in some rights, they did re-invent it.
Actually I am dying for a stylus! I just ordered both Pogo Sketch ones.

Stylus is great only on devices bigger than the iPad, but as an accessory only, for designers.

Once, what separated us from most animals was that we had evolved to make use of tools.
And then came Steve :)
