Yes the Alizé was retired in september 2000 and replaced by 3x E2C Awkeye in the "flottille 4F" based in Lann Bihoue (near Lorient)
The Alizé was a excellent aircaft, easy to fly, very relable and efficient in he's time , and able to take off from the carrier without catapult ,and land without arrestor hook
France sold the Foch carrier to Bresil 2 years ago and stopped to use his 2nd one 'The Clemenceau". France forces use now a new one (built 4 years ago) le "Charles de Gaulle" carrier (nuclear propulsion) filled with "Rafale" aircraft
Always thought it funny that France, going to the industrial extent of domestically producing two carriers, would still purchase a foreign fighter to fill out its fleet air defense arms. Perhaps, in the wake of Vietnam reductions and the broader removal of the F-8 from the U.S. inventory, buying used simply made better fiscal sense?
Great video, F8 & Super Etendard made good combination. Keep hearing France will build 2nd carrier; is this true? France always had 2 carriers before, just my opinion but should have 2 again.
F8 Crusaders used a rope harness to attach to the catapult shuttle, as did the old F4, A3, A4, and many Vietnam era planes; it's hooked to a clamp that retains it at the end of the catapult launch stroke. The harness was good for only so many launches. After that, it's allowed to simply go over the side at the end of the launch - or that's the way it was in the US Navy. I assume the French do the same. Modern naval aircraft use a nosegear bar to hook to the cat shuttle.
@ boodaddy3 , Thanks for that, I have never seen the harness comeback I have always seen it disappear i just thought they go over the side but that would mean they would need to carry a lot of those cables = lots of $ lost.
but if you see at 6:59 a splash from the cable and all those cables on the deck next to the catapult its confusing lol

F-8 was the only production aircraft to use a variable angle of incidence wing. Really cool aircraft.

French Navy seems has an interesting choice of landing gear. Rafale M appears to be a departure from the norm.
discofishing 7 months ago
@discofishing Rafale is a french company, so wouldn't that mean that the french landing gear is the "normal" landing gear?

The Foch was sold to Brazil in 2000. Now named the São Paulo. The Marinha do Brasil uses A-4 skyhawks off her deck.
